Luxury SUV Review

Luxury SUV Review
I was bored this weekend, so I decided to do a little review on the luxury SUV market. I got a new BMW X5 3.0si Executive, a BMW X6 3.5si, a Mercedes-Benz ML 350, and an Audi Q7 3.6 FSI Quattro Tiptronic and tested them out (yes I am aware that the X6 and X5 are both built by BMW).

The first one I tested was the Q7. It has appeal, but it looks less-elegant than the X5, X6, and ML.

The interior is quite nice, as I love the A6. It has no ‘plasticky’ feel to it, and when I turned it on and drove off, it went quite well.
It was great for cruising at about 60km/h, except it really lets itself down because it’s ugly at the rear.
Consumption was good, and one thing that is great about it (this character is shared with Porsche), is that nobody in my street, that is full of X5’s & ML’s, where the owners constantly are upgrading, had one.
But that made me ask the question whether they don’t have one because it isn’t good?

After having my fun, I retired to the ML.

One thing you notice about the ML is it isn’t extremely elegant, but it is a nice combination.
The drive was smooth and crisp, and everything seems to work.
However the standard interior seats which are some 80 year old cloth combination is really, really awful and makes me seem like I’m in a 20 year old has-been luxury car.
It doesn’t come with a standard navigation system, which is a pain, since nearly every single one of its competitors has it as standard.

After a smooth yet strangely painful drive, I put it away and got into my X5.

One thing you notice in the X5 is it hasn’t changed in about 5,000,000 ways, but just in the ways that are needed, such as a new interior design, refreshed exterior.
The iDrive is very conventional, the drive is extremely smooth and it sounds very powerful.
I especially like its rear-camera system, that shows you about 30 different ways something can become an obstacle, and its speed-limiter system, that doesn’t beep wildly until you have slowed down since you jumped out of the car, but just plays a quick melody that only plays once you go over the speed, not every 5th nanosecond you’re nearly over the speed limit.
It smells nice too.
It looks the meanest out of the lot, also.

Once I had unglued myself to this marvellous car, I put it away with the Q7 and ML to have a spin in the X6.
The X6 isn’t really that different to the X5.
The drive isn’t different, the interior isn’t different, most of the design isn’t different, the tail lamps and headlights aren’t really different, the size isn’t different, the appeal isn’t different and the only thing that is a major difference is its flat, European coupe style rear.
And it is very sporty.
If you were blind, you’d think you were in a nice coupe.
Because the drive is brilliant, the size is just right and everything is always ‘just-right’ about it.
This is my favourite out of the lot, even though it isn’t really a full on SUV.

Next up would be the X5, followed by the ML and the Q7 last.

I would give the X5 and the X6, 5/5 stars, the ML 4 ½/5 stars, and the Q7 4/5 stars.

It is one of the most tight luxury car markets there is.

Other possible contenders for this were the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.
I couldn’t get the Range Rover in time, so I couldn’t have it.
And I chose not to get the Cayenne, because I’m not some middle-aged man using Porsche's and Motorola telephones to cover up some mid-life crisis.

"It was great for cruising at about 60km/h, except it really lets itself down because it’s ugly at the rear."

???

"But that made me ask the question whether they don’t have one because it isn’t good?"

Of course not.

"It doesn’t come with a standard navigation system, which is a pain, since nearly every single one of its competitors has it as standard."

No... they don't. It's an option on both the X5 and Q7, as well as the Lexus RX, Infiniti FX and others.

"It smells nice too."

LOL. Love the X5.

If the drive isn't different (X6), and it has less space, and it's more expensive... Why do you even like it more?

Excuse me S4cabriofoxone, but I live in AUSTRALIA, where the NAVIGATION UNIT is STANDARD on the BMW X5 and BMW X6 and Audi Q7. Do some RESEARCH before you begin CRITIQUE my ARTICLE. On the MERCEDES-BENZ ML-CLASS it is not STANDARD equipment until you get the ML 500.

Having just driven the X6 on a rigorous auto-x which included a wet skidpad, I have disagree with one point that bmwfan999 made. The X6 most definitely handles better. It has Dynamic Performance Control or an integrated torque vectoring and stability control system. It is absolutely incredible. Where other vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne are lurching and understeering on the wet skidpad, the X6 feels like it is defying physics. Of course, it isn't, but it goes much, much faster and inspires great confidence while doing it. The X6 can basically steer with the rear wheels as well as the front so the whole vehicle can pivot at will, even with your foot to the floor the wheel cranked. Anyway, it is my top pick as well. I don't need the wagon-shaped space of the typical SUV and the X6 can easily carry four sets of clubs.

Well at least AdHominem makes a proper point and doesn't create half a encyclopedia on point that can only be related to the North American vehicle market.
While I still stick to the points that I have made, his comment is valued as it doesn't personally critique what I liked and disliked about those cars.

Sorry, you will notice that just after halfway in my comment underneath what AdHominem disagreed on, I say 'he'.
I accidentally typed it and hope it hasn't caused any offence. Please replace it with he/she

This is a ridiculously biased article! For a start describing the BMW's as "elegant" is kind of like describing Bush as peaceful and diplomatic, and coming from someone who finds the Audi back end to be ugly just shows blinding bias! Unholy apparitions would be a better description for the BMW's...

The Audi goes quite well at 60km/h... What kind of a test is this?

I read maps and hate Nav systems. For me, the Q7 V12TDI takes the cake even if it does come with a NAV system.

im glad the RX wasnt considered in the bunch of luxury SUVs...even though it was the car that defined the segment in 1999

lol...

If the ML is considered, then the RX is definately hanging out with the right group in this category.

lexus RX length: 186.2 inches
Mercedes Ml Length: 188.5 inches

so is there really a size difference?
the lexus also has a more powerful engine than the ML at that

adamsaf723, you just made a textbook ad hominem attack. It is the weakest "argument" that can be made. Look it up on wiki...

"It is also used when an opponent is unable to find fault with an argument, yet for various reasons, the opponent disagrees with it."

I like BMW's over Mercedes and Audi's, yes, however this comparison is not biased and even if you took every single thing that said 'BMW' off the X5 and X6, I would still not change the placing that they were put in.
How about you let go of criticizing my article because of what my name is and give up on being obnoxious.
You give me one good reason on why my name has manipulated the outcome of this review, not just because you feel like creating a problem to just annoy people.

If you don't damn well believe it, OPEN your EYES and go to WWW.MERCEDES-BENZ.COM.AU and WWW.BMW.COM.AU and WWW.AUDI.COM.AU and CHECK IT OUT for YOURSELF.

By the way, we don't have Infiniti vehicles in Australia.

DOES THIS MAKE IT CLEAR FOR YOU, OR DO I HAVE TO SAY IT IN GRADE THREE LANGUAGE FOR YOU?

Who said I done believe? It would have been HELPFUL (as long as we're shouting) for you to have made that clear in the ARTICLE. Since this is an American website and you didn't say where you live, it's easy to assume.

You rate Lexus vehicles all in the third spot so I thought maybe I should have a go at, idolling you, being an a-hole and say you are being biased because you rank the same brand all in the top order.

You can't judge my article on my name.
I own 2 BMW's, 1 Mercedes and 1 Lexus so you can't really say I am all 100% biased towards BMW's otherwise I wouldn't have ditched my 2-year old 7-Series for a Mercedes S-Class.

People like you should stop littering good articles with tons of s___.

And hey, speaking of idolling Go0bama, I think you're going to be biased in the US Presidential race for Barack Obama.

See, I can dribble out thick-headed nonsense too.

Having seen a large percent of idiots on Autospies, this is how I would rank them:
1. Go0bama
2. Go0bama
3. Go0bama
4. Go0b...

And what the hell are you cracked up to be?

Some fanatical Barack Obama fanboy?

Or something else?

Q7 though looks a bit ugly to me especially from rear 3/4ths, here in UAE it(Q7 V8) costs nearly $15K less than the X5 V8. So that makes it a good alternative to the benchmark in it's class, The X5. Especially when it produces nearly same power, on par with X5's interior and more spaciuos.

Therefore my favoutite out of those SUVs is definately X5. Followed by Q7, ML and X6.

I like BMW's, yes. In fact, I'd prefer to drive and own a BMW other any other vehicle.

In my opinion, I personally think Mercedes-Benz is the best automotive brand, ever.

Think, where would you be with out most of these Mercedes-Benz inventions?

Before you consider critiquing me because my username is 'bmwfan999', how about we all begin a little charade on always assuming somebody is biased because of their name. Like LexusKindaGuy12. Or S4cabriofoxone.

Come on, lets all create some rally about them being biased. Why not?

Why don't you go do it to them? Because they might be American? Because you like their name more than mine?

Get a life.

***S4cabriofoxone and LexusKindaGuy12***
(I'm just using their usernames as examples)

Actually I have the answer: LandRover Discovery3.

These vehicles are all a joke, just some are better looking than others, and a few are awful!

So, do you think Americans build absolutely brilliant, elegant cars?

North America is a disposable society (30% greenhouse gas emmisions contributor compared to 1% australian), and every single one of the cars they make, apart from the Ford GT, are disposable.

But even the Ford GT isn't that American either, because a lot of its stuff is from Aston Martin and Lotus.
