Motive: Infiniti FX50 vs. Porsche Cayenne S
What we have here are two vehicles not particularly high on the Sierra Club's Christmas-card list. The Infiniti FX and the Porsche Cayenne, both hatched in 2003, are the original hardcore performance utes — no third rows of seats here, no hybrid drivetrains (yet), no cute little puffs of water-vapor tailpipe emissions through which cartoon bunnies may frolic. Their social acceptability has fallen as gas prices have risen, and they're probably in danger of becoming an agenda item on the next round of Kyoto protocols.

Both crossovers do nearly the same job and are similarly powered. Therefore it all comes down to design, interior, features, value...etc.

So i'll choose the fresh and stylish new FX50 over the Cayenne S as it's got a far better looking interior than the Cayenne. Cayenne is too bulky and fat looking, ordinary interior design and costs a little more.

You guys have a weird concept of prestige over there in the Middle East.

who cares about prestige?? how do you use that as a parameter to judge a car? is it how impressed you think your friends will be after telling them you bought a new Porsche? why buy a car that offers ALOT less performance, cost about 20k more when comparably equiped and to some (maybe most) it looks much worse.

It all comes down to preference. I mean, yes, one is a Porsche and one is an Infiniti, but you have to think about product range as well... FX50 is Nissan's top of the line Crossover, while the Cayanne S, which they classify as a Crossover, is just slotted in the middle. They are different cars, different purposes, and...

All in all, I think that its a bad comparo... too much difference in spec... only price and HP are the same, which makes for a horrible comparo...

I have read your post and tried to find something i can agree with but i couldnt. Lets clarify somethings. 1st) Our perception of where these cars are located price wise in their respective ranges is completely irrelevant. You say Fx50 is Nissan and not infiniti, im assuming your trying to say its a rebadged Nissan, Which it def isnt. The Fx rides on the a platform that was more identical to the RWD 350z, where as the murano, was an altima FWD platform, so it couldnt be more of a different car from the nissan 2nd) nobody takes a porsche Cheyenne S with 40 series profile tires offroading, maybe a base v6 with the 18 inchers. The point is, a fully loaded Fx50 which starts at 54 thousand U.S.D, competes with a Cheyyene S which cost exactly 70,400 when comparably loaded. And yes the stats are different, but thats becuase the fx50 obliterates it when it comes to performance, which is what i think customers who buy Porsches in the first place cherrish more than anything else.

CommonSense01:
"The Fx rides on the a platform that was more identical to the RWD 350z"

And Cayenne is based on VW Touareg and Audi Q7 not only platform but also other components - even some engine is common .

1) There is not one part of the Cayenne engine that can be removed an put in place on a Touarag or Q7 engine.

2)The platform sharing is irrelevant. You can build a $200,000 home on the same foundation as a $2,000,000 home. The platform is very capable in all three models; the differences are in what is buil;t on top of it.

ABCD and jpighetti

My pointt wasnt to thrash component sharing, I was just trying to say that although most poeple think that the murano and FX are similar, THey arent. Also, i was pointing out the fact that the fx is closer to a sports car than most other SUVs. You guys both misread my comment.

I did not implied that Infinitis are rebadged Nissans, but it is the parent company. Thats one. I was just stating facts.

Two, they are totally different cars. And I think that you proved my point that there is really nothing similar about the two besides for price range and power. but there are also much more they have different than in common, like over 200kg of weight difference, purpose differences. Like I said, people who will opt for a performance Porsche SUV will opt for a Turbo (S). People who will opt for an Infiniti performance SUV will opt for the FX50. Its just irrelevant of a comparo, to base it on price and HP.

I am not taking away credit from the FX50, because its a great car, I'm sure, but the comparo is just trying too hard to give Infiniti credit, by matching it with a mediocre Porsche, and saying that its better than a PORSCHE Cayenne in general.

And by the way, its Cayenne, not Cheyyenne...

1st) thanks for correcting me on the spelling of the name, im really not conducting an english class here, just typing as fast as possible at work.

2nd) WHAT are you talking aobut??? The porsche Cayenne is not know for its offroad prowess rather, its performance capabilities. You couldnt be more wrong, how are they different cars?? Two v8s, base priced wthin two thousand dollars of eachother. HOW are they different? Just because the infiniti is lighter and more capable, does not mean the porsche is a "mediocre car" Poeple who buy the S, opt not to buy the turbo not because they dont want it, but because Porsche charges supercar prices, so to say that the S is somehow in a different catagory than the fx is just false. How aobut the GTS????? just because an fx50 will murder it performance wise, is it also not a dedicated sport truck?? 6 speed manual, 20 inch wheels, sport tuned suspension?? AM i missing something here? you have no argument if you think the Porsche Chyenne is not dedicated to performance( The name Porsche should ring a bell, no).

mechanical perfection? I think you missed the bulk of the article, it says the Cayenne is a mechanical perfection, but they prefer the "electronical" systems of the Infiniti...

No, badge whores will choose the Porche. If you really want a performance crossover, the Infiniti is the choice.

But you're a whore, not a driving enthusiast.

I guess it all comes down to a matter of taste. Those looking for "prestige" will most like get the Porsche way and not bother to ever step foot in an Infiniti dealership. Also IMO it looks better.

And those looking for raw performance in a nice neat package that also has utility will jump on the Infiniti. 5 sec to 60 and 4600 lbs that's speaks for its self.

So I guess all just a matter of taste.

notice that the butt end of the porsh is reminisent of bwm suvs? it looks really ugly and outdated, and boxy, especially compared to the graceful lines of the fx.

FX is far nicer (including looks, are these people blind?) and performs SOOO much better--remind me again why anyone would get the Cayenne? Oh yeah, it's got the name "Porche" associated with it.
