Will The BMW 1-Series Make Its PRESENCE Felt Against The Competition?
As I was reading through the blogs , I read a comment from a reader saying that the new 2008 BMW 1-Series didn't have any presence.

I chuckled to myself because my guess is that he has never seen one close up in person.

So I decided to do an informal test with YOU, our readers, to see if he is right or he needs to get out of his Hyundai more often and get some air.

I took the 1-Series around to the local dealers here in San Diego and photographed it next to a lot of the key competitors and some cars that aren't competitors, but just to see if it could hold its own against the elite.

The are also so really nice cameo shots of the car for those of you (like me) who can't get enough of this little pocket rocket.

Is it ever FUN to drive.

I didn't want to hand the keys back to the guys at BMW of San Diego!

So, does the new 1 have presence and does it stand tall against the competition.

Let's purchase a car based on what other people will think of it!

So I guess you are a consumer who's values lie in the artificial status of owning a car that everyone will like, rather than a personal feeling which may (shock horror) be more fulfilling as an ownership experience.

Let's forget about the 1-Series for a moment (I know, you didn't know that was possible on Autospies) and take a look at how shallow that comment was.

I for one don't care for the opinions of others when I buy a car, for me it is a deeply personal experience but I guess I'm just old-fashioned....

Matthew, looks are the first thing you see and first inpression means a lot. When you see it, its not impressive what so ever, I would keep looking until I stumble upon a 3 or any of those competitors above.

0to60 ... I think the car has more of an old school look to it. I like it alot and the drive is something short of spectacular. In regards to presence from looks then I would say the Mercedes C-class has it won hands down. I just dont like how it drives as compared to the 135. Therefore, since I have to live with my decision for 3 to 4 years, I will always go with what is the most fun. For me, the 135 is hands down the most fun I had in driving cars in the 13 years I have been with BMW & Mercedes. I currently own a 2006 330xi sedan and a 2008 535i. I would trade either car in order to get my hands on a 135i.

dlin ... I work for BMW. I currently own a 2006 330xi and a 2008 535i. I have driven both the 335 coupe and 135 extensively. Without a doubt the 135 is a better drivers car. Actually there is nothing on the road that I would drive in that price category. The 135 I am getting will list out at just over $42k. it is an awesome, awesome car. If you have not had the chance to drive it, then you are missing out. absolute blst to drive

This BMW is small yes, because it was created to be small and more in line with how BMW used to be, smaller compacts that performed brilliantly. Because it is small it makes it more prone for women to buy? I doubt that. Besides, around here I have only seen men driving the first few I have seen on the road and I am in NYC.

when it comes to showing off a cars presence, design plays a big role. the 1 series look plain/ok than boring after a while. the other cars its being compared to in the pics look far better and that G37 looks real sweet btw. the porsche seems a bit random though. the pricing o the 1 doesnt help either

The majority of 3 series sold in the U.S. are 4 door sedans. Probably why this car is only sold with 2 doors here.

I have driven it and ALL fo its competitors, on a track. It is by far way above and beyond them all. The C350 is not meant for the 1 series market, the G37 is heavy and power takes too long to kick in. EVO's and Lancers are tin cans. There is nothing that this car cannot beat.

I have to say I found it funny that you commented on how it takes too long for the G37's power to kick in, when it's naturally aspirated and the 135i is turbocharged. Really speaks volumes about BMW's engineering expertise.

The 1 Series does seem a bit pricey for me (blame the US Dollar against the Euro for this, a friend of mine works at BMW USA and he said that was a huge factor in its price.) but the drive!!!! Everyone making negative comments here needs to at least do themseleves a favor and go test drive it. The 1 series handles and performs better than the C Class, the Audi A4, and A3, better than the G37 and any Lexus. Now the Porsche there is a bit of a stretch since I think it drives better than the 1, but the others, it blows it out of the water. The 1 Series is every bit of fun. I have a 3 Series and I have to say it is more fun than it! I think the only thing in the way of this car is price... now if you want less power but about the same amount of handling fun, the 128i is a good choice also, and is a bit less expensive.

I'm not a BMW guy and I love it. It drives phenominally well. The looks aren't amazing, but when I'm in the market for a car in the next year or two, this will def be on my list.

I haven't had the pleasure of driving one yet but I have rode in one as a passenger. Unfortunately I have to say that even though it may drive great (even from the passenger seat) its ugly as hell and no matter what anyone says if you don't like the way the car looks that you are driving you don't get a lot of purchase satisfaction out of it.

Agent 001, I've already drove this car. I personnaly liked it more than 3 series for driving. But generaly this car does not compete with 3 series or IS or A4 or C classe. I personnaly prefer my Z4 to a 911 but it does not mean that it competes with a 911.

Why is there so much hate towards the 911 on this site?

It is an icon. It won't ever change dramatically. It is function over form. The way it was designed was from an engineering standpoint, but it just happened to turn out to be beautiful. I want one, you've had one and it's been in all of our boyhood dreams.

Now as for the BMW 135, the front of the car is extremely ugly, where the rest of the car is ok. The car is extremely expensive, $50k???? Crazy just crazy!

Well, that was a completely loaded car with a 4k dealer 'pack' on it.

You can get a really nicely configured one for 42k.

Dealers are telling me they are getting lots of custom orders for cars in the low 40's and that BMW loaded them up with more expensive cars for the first run...

001, dont you realize your like the only one whos backin up the 135? this car really didnt deserve to be "car of the year" just because of its "twin turbo engine", "large as hell trunk", and its "28MPG gas mileage" theres nothing exciting about this car...5gs cheaper than the 3/ weighs like a 100LBS less than the 3, it doesnt look good and the interior of the car seems like it was rushed instead of thought-out.

Everyone Agent001 is right on!! - I am blown away by the 135i! I have been considering a new 335i but it now looks dated next to the 135i. I will probably buy a 135i and only add the power seats. That will keep me in a hot ride that stays in the 30's.

How dare you say that the 911 looks "old fashioned". Yes, compared to the all new 135i yes it does look like... um... a 911. So? It is what it is. There must be some reason Porsche engineers haven't changed the profile in over 35 years! It works!

If the 1er is too expensive for you then you shouldn't complain about the price just because you can't afford it; and call it a bad car. That just asinine.

But, if you can afford it, then it going to be the 2002 all over again for Bimmer fans (no not for the budget factor but for the cult following). With the addition of it's six pot brakes, M tuned suspension, and a M limited slip its an out-of-the-box runner. Then it comes down to software tuning. One word: Vishnu. They have done wonders with the 335i in terms of a tremendous increase in the HPDi Bi-Turbo Six's power and drivability (in case you didn't know folks the 1er uses the same lump).

So, kudos to M GmbH for providing some of there deity-like breathing on a great new performance car.

I'm sure it handles and drives great but in terms of just physical presence, you've dumped your own argument by showing pics of it next to the stunning G37 coupe, making the 135i look horribly econo-boxy.

Seriously tho, park it next to a 335i coupe next time, preferably one with a factory skirt kit, and NO WAY anybody's gonna notice the 135i is even there.

That 4K chrome job is the dealer's way of amplifying his profit on the car...They all do stuff like that when a hot new car comes in so they can maximize the return to make up for other cars they have to give away to move them.

Too much $ for nothing more than a toy. I didn't see the 1 photographed next to an A5. Mine had an MSRP of $43K, ass $1100 for a set of Bridgestone Pole Positions and the thing sings. I saved 4 grand and trust me. I have a real head turner.

I love the LOOK of A5 coupe...looks as good as the 335 from some angles and better from others.

But it's still slow.

It's a great touring coupe, not a sportscar.

It doesn't look "as good" as the 335. It absolutely ANNIHILATES IT. The car is just stunning. I almost followed an S5 down the road, I couldn't tear my eyes away.

And, to add, since when did 0-60 in 5.8 become "slow?" Maybe in the age of mindless horsepower wars and sub-5 second 0-60 times in 3 Series models, it is, but it presents the perfect mix of straight-line speed, beauty, luxury, efficiency and price. The A5 3.0TDI will only take that up eight notches.

The Pontiac Aztec may have driven like a Porshe 911 - I will never know because the looks put me off so much that nothing would get me behind the wheel of one.

Similarly the 135 is the most hideous $30k+ coupe I have ever seen. When considering a car to buy (not just test drive) looks are fairly important to me and is the first test - the car doesn't have to look stunning or even look good to get to the next phase in my consideration. The 135 fails so spectacularly on looks I will never get to phase 2. Honestly the 335 coupe (which is just passable in looks to my eyes) looks like a Turner painting compared to a Jockson Pollock mess that is the 1 series. I suppose the Toyota Echo looks worse than the 135, but not by much...

Guess again. When I traded my 07 328xi coupe I did drive the 135, A5 and G37. I wanted a car for "grown ups" so that left out the 1 right away. SLow is relative and I assure you that if you havent driven an A5 it is nestled between either the 128/135 or 328/335 coupes. With far better looks, road manners and sophistication. When you have to put your near $50k where your mouth is it is a whole different story. Where I live a 135 is a graduation gift from a parent to a daughter.

When you only have 8 hours with a car, you need to make the best of your time.

And trust me, EVERYWHERE I took it, the response was HOT!

The Lexus salespeople almost jumped out the window of the dealership to get a closeup on it.

Same with the Mercedes, Porsche and Infiniti salespeople.

Everywhere I drove it people were giving us the thumbs up and shooting it with camera phones.

It looks awesome, but I'm sick of the hate on this site. Why does the Porsche 911 have to be "old-fashioned?" Why do you have to call the Audi A5 "slow" to validate this car's greatness? Can't you just leave the cars to their own merits?

I think it is relatively well known that I am not really a BMW fan. Having said that, the 1-series is far better looking in person and rather, dare I say, fetching. This is particularly true of the profile and a color other than that horrible tomato red color.

The 1 series is good but is not to compete with any of those cars. C is 3 and IS not for 1 series, G37 is for 3 Series Coupe.
Now for type of car , 1 series are too expensive. I prefer a 335 turbo from here to China (and of course is also a different category).

I'm sure the 135i runs like a scalded rabbit, but for my money I would have to buy something that struck me as gorgeous from all angles.
Certain angles on that car just don't look right. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it is just kind of ugly. Now the 335i coupe is a different story.

Well I am not American , but I know a lot of americans friends that drives better than several Europeans. And it is Ingenuous if you think that "most" of americans prefer looks instead of performance. Again the comparation is so stuped as compare the Engine AMG 6.2 with M3 4.0, Or the Sl63 with M6. I think Bimmerphiles think that just because a car have a BMW logo, every body should love it, well is not going to happen, specialy because the only good thing in the 1 series is the performance, the design is horrible for me, however again: the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, not my eyes.

Au Contraire, mon ami.. We don't care if everybody (or even if anyone) loves it.. We expect few to love it - as I mentioned above.
Few will love a car mainly because of its handling and performance. Those who will love it will do so because its handling, performance, power and engineering. It has no equal in its price category..
That you dislike the 1-series purely because of it's design validates my earlier argument.

The real question here I believe was "does the new 1-series have presence? well by judging from all of the comments I would have to say yes it does. as for the looks of the car that is just a matter of individual opinion, what looks good to one will not look good to someone else, there's going to be a percentage of consumers that will buy a car based off of looks, like there will be a percentage that will buy for performance, handling, and driving dynamics, again everyone's different with different taste. I think the 1-series has a somewhat muscular look and I don't think presence is going to be a problem for it.

the competition of 128 is Cooper S (CAD 48300 VS 41700), not g37,IS. Most female customer don't care 0-100,FWD or RWD, they just want brand & look cute.

Lets start talking about BMW making 300+ hp cars without standard LSD's. LSD isn't even available as an option.

WTF?? $40k+ for a 1 series or a 3 series and ONE wheel drive?

Is an LSD available in markets outside the US?

And please don't misunderstand me, they are for the most part nice people and we have no beef with them personally...like anything in life, always a few bad apples.

My point is if you're going to talk about something and have credibility, you should be invested.

It would be like saying you're the number one computer reviewer and then everyone finds out you've never owned one and use a typewriter!

The 1-series is a nice looking car especially with the chrome wheels on there. I saw one on the road the other day & it looked great.

As for those pictures...Next to the IS it looked a little bubbly compared to the Lex's sharp lines, The G37's stance looks way more aggressive, & 911's timeless design is one of my fav's & IMO just outshines the 1.

However I will say the 1-series looks the most modern out of any car it was pictured next too, & has more presence than all but the G37 & possibly the Carrera. Of Course the 1-series would be much more attractive if it was competing in a somewhat cheaper category.

Agreed Bimmerfan, but I do want to check it out. I like the 335i but can't get over the lack of LSD. I have experienced the IS-F's take on the "electronic LSD" and am not impressed. I don't think BMW can pull it off either.
