Audi A6 most popular German car

The Audi A6 is the “most popular German car”. For the sixth time, over 100 regional weekly newspapers in the German states of Brandenburg, Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt called upon their readers to vote for “Our Car”. More than 120,000 took part. Readers were able to choose from the new cars to appear on the market last year as well as those that lead the registration statistics: a total of 70 vehicles. In the end it was the Audi A6 that finished clearly top of the readers’ list.

This continues the series of awards that have gone to this successful Audi model. The new Audi A6 went into production in February 2004. Since then it has won numerous national and international trophies, including the “World Car of the Year” title. The choice of the Audi A6 as “the most popular German car” by newspaper readers in the former East German states is the latest stage in this model’s success story.

This is the second time that Audi has finished top of the “Our Car” poll in the former East German states. In 2001 the Audi A4 picked up the coveted title of the most popular car.

The A6 is a nice car but I like the BMW 5 series better. The BMW drives better in just about every way (maybe not in the rain though I'm not sure). The BMW has better steering and handling, and it soaks up bumps better. Also the seating position and outward visibility are much better in the BMW. By no means do I intend to say the Audi stinks - I do like it, it is a nice car but I would rather have the BMW.

Can anyone in the former East Germany even afford an A6? Sorry, that's a cheapshot :)

Kind of a weird poll to mention in Autospies.

I love my E46 and don't like the new Audi designs but they seem like good cars. I'd love to get the previous model S4 when I get rid of my current car. Even though Audi is taking performance seriously, they still have a fundamentally different approach to achieving it than BMW--big engines, quattro vs. lighter, nimbler RWD cars at BMW (and more emphasis on manuals). Pick your poison I guess.

The brand new A6 finished 5th in Car and Driver's recent comparison, with the 530i with the old 225-hp engine finishing 6th. Though to be honest I hope Audi's V8 can beat BMW's old six. Of course the new M45 torched them all.
