WORLD'S FIRST: Edmunds.com Drives the New Audi TT-S

Not so long ago, Audi was happy to pose as the style leader. What the cars lacked in driving finesse, they made up for in haute couture. They were the automotive equivalent of Paris Hilton's dog — a neat accessory, but not much good at walking.

And no car epitomized this image more than the original 1998 Audi TT. It looked iconic, but its Bauhaus-inspired looks wrote a check that its VW Golf-derived chassis couldn't cash.

But in recent years, Audi has sought to change this image with the second-generation TT that was launched two years ago, a more focused driver's tool. Now this car has become the first TT to wear Audi's "S" badge. On sale here this November as both a coupe and a roadster, the 2009 Audi TTS is powered by a 265-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and it's meant to go toe-to-toe with the BMW Z4 3.0, Mercedes SLK350 and even (whisper it) the Porsche Cayman and Boxster.

Before anyone asks, the TT-S accelerated from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds.

Keep in mind that this is from Edmunds, notorious for their slow 0-60 times.

I knew this would happen all along, but people were doubtful because of its relatively low power rating.

actually C&D also had a first drive, by reading both articles, I am not convinced that they really drove the car. It seems they have been "driven" in it and then given a bunch of press material.
Anybody else gets that feeling?

Perhaps.

Now that I look at it again, you're right, it seems like they don't say much about how the car actually drives. They just kind of give us the numbers and then say it isn't a Cayman; there's nothing specific about the handling or road feel.

BTW I got my C&D... there's no TT-S article?

Yep, both sound quite generic with little deep insight. Should have very nice performance and fuel economy.

If it wasn't for BMW, we would be driving shoe boxes.

I'm not a fan of the front bodykit. Other than that, the car looks really good.

If the Camry had the same style, quality interior, handling, feel and emotional appeal of the TT then you might be on to something.

Good one... I guess its not as good as a Camry because its less HP. I guess a Lotus Exige is not as good either, because its got less HP.

Hell, following your logic, I guess A Nissan GT-R can't match up to a Mack Titan, because it only has 480hp, compared to a Mack's 605hp rating...

You... can't... be... serious. A Camry. Did you just audition for the NBC pilot for "Top Gear"? Wow.

There are enthusiasts and people.. you'd think so...

I really like it.

And when it comes to performance, not every sports car needs to be the fastest thing around for it to be successful.

Mazda's Miata is not going to beat out a Ferrari, but you can't say the Miata is not a true sports car.
