Dude, BMW makes 4 door cars that can fit 5 people comfortablly and keep up with high end porsches on the track...anyone can make a small sports car perform well.

What I ment was porsches like Carrera and 911 Turbo...to me they're pretty high end compared to Cayman and Boxter...i wasn't referring to Carrera GT and GT2.

hard to be impressed when one look at the e90 forums shows that the twin turbo straight six likes to fail a lot, mostly due to HPFP. isnt there a recall for that? not impressed...

besides, best performance engine award went to the 3.6L turbo. go porsche!

BMW routinely squeezes 100hp or more per liter out of it's engines.

for example, the M3 and ISF make the same hp...but the BMW does it with 4.0liters and the lexus takes 5.0liters.

likewise, the 3.0liter twin-turbo pull 100hp per liter, as does the V10 in the M5 and M6.

BMW offers some of the most efficient engines in the world for the power that they produce. Lexus will probably start putting turbos on some of their so called performance cars in order to compete.

Write this down so you don't forget it when it actually comes true.

Frankly, I would take such far more seriously were it judged by those who are qualified to judge the technical merits of an engine - I.e. Engineers as opposed to a bunch of know nothing journalists. No offense meant to present company, but I have known some journalists and they are generally the worst kind of stupid.

Perhaps a professional body would come to the same conclusion, I don't know. It is the disease of our times - everyone thinks it is their prerogative to give their opinion on everything.

This could be a good thing for Autospies to arrange - poll a bunch of car enthusiasts who belong to SAE or ASME on their top picks.

Do you honestly believe that not 1 engine failed? Come on no matter how good the product's design, engineering, or production at least 1 will fail when you reach that high of a production number.

There have been plenty of vtec failures, a simple google search confirms that!

I am not talking about ASME and SAE members on autospies you twit. I am talking about autospies being more proactive and taking the initiative to do an appropriate anysis that is somewhat free of a fundamental problem.
Otherwise it is just some retard with a degree in journalism lecturing you in engineering. Although I will say that I think that they should ask SAE members to nominate an engine with the winner being decided by a panel of -important word- experts. I suggest this because 001 seems to be rather keen on making this site all it can be.

They win quite a few every year. This year would have been no different if BMW hadn't come out with so many new engines. All of Audi and VW's new engines came out from 2005-2007.

Why the hell are you comparing the 328i to the IS350? It competes with the IS250.

2.5L = 204hp - 81.6hp/L

It must be noted that BMW can easily get more than 230hp from the 328i's engine. The same 3.0L inline six is sold with 260hp in Europe in n/a form.
