Cadillac CTS-V blitzes the 'Ring in 7:59.32
Cadillac aims for the 2009 CTS-V to be the fastest production sedan in the world--and the goal is in sight after a prototype fitted with production components posted a sub-eight-minute lap time at Germany's famed Nürburgring track.

The CTS-V lapped the 12.9-mile track in 7 minutes, 59.32 seconds, which General Motors says appears to be the fastest time ever for a production sedan. John Heinricy, head of GM's performance division and race-car driver, piloted the car.

The CTS-V goes on sale this fall. Under its hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that makes about 550 hp, though final SAE figures haven't been released. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be available, and it will have a new version of GM's Magnetic Ride Control suspension.

The CTS-V's lap time puts it close to the 7:56 posted by a Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It's about half a minute behind the 7:29 that Nissan officials say was posted by a new Nissan GT-R in mid-April.

The fastest lap time by a production car at the historic track is believed to be 6:55, set in September 2005 by a car made by British company Radical.

cts-v versus the gtr-v. only comman theme is the v. that's where it ends. only a moron would mention the GTR when discussing a sports sedan.

I agree. I think it's definitely a looker, inside (FINALLY!) and out. The previous models were a bit off for me, but I think they've finally succeeded with this styling theme.

Is it just me, or does this sound a bit stupid. So GM is producing a sports car (Corvette) that can barely outrun its performance sedan. It just doesnt sound right to me.

I hate the outside looks, but the inside is nice. The exhaust is crazy, I saw a CTS-V the other day and the exhaust note sounded nice and powerful.

That's why the Nurburgring is a good litmus test. If you put a big engine in a car you get a good 0-60 time but not much more. A good time on a road course means they've got more than just HP.

Another useless time. It's pointless unless achieved by a third party. I like how they used their best in house driver.

Not that the CTS-V won't be fast, but this time is likely a little inflated.

Uhhh... what? "They used their best in-house driver"? Excuse me, but "in-house" means he works for them! John Heinricy has been developing GM performance cars for YEARS and he has been a winning racer for the same time. So what they used him? As if other manufacturers use their SLOW drivers. Sorry to say, but your response does not make sense -- and that's being charitable.
