BMW 335i on the way?

I get a kick when I read these websites that credit another site for breaking a story that really didn't break it.

It was AutoSpies that broke this story over a YEAR ago...get your facts straight boys!

I just had a conversation with one of my internal moles at BMW headquarters.

They also told me they are absolutely hooked on Auto Spies and they read it at work when the execs are not around.

BMW BREWS TURBOCHARGED 3-SERIES
New 330bhp 335i arrives in 2006

BMW 330i. Following on from our road test on the BMW 330i, posted yesterday, BMW is to launch an uprated version, the 335i. Due on the mainland in just over a year and in the UK six months later, it will feature a turbo-charged version of the 3.0-litre petrol engine found in the 330i. This boosts power by 72bhp to around 330bhp, which is just 13bhp short of the current 3.2-litre M3, and looks likely to get you to 60mph from rest in some six seconds.

The turbos will be fitted so that one works at lower engine speeds to boost low-end torque, while the other picks up higher up the rev range. Autocar speculates that it will be mated to a DSG-alike double-clutch gearbox, for seamless shifting.

According to this week's Autocar, which broke the story, it's intended to plug the gap between the 330i and the forthcoming M3, and will have a 4.0-litre powerplant shoe-horned in, along with a hefty price. That won't launch until 2007.

I guess BMW got tired of hearing other brands brag about inflated HP numbers. Doesn't seem totally necessary--the previous post mentioned the 0-60 numbers the 330i has been tested at and I don't think they're really lagging behind there (they've never seemed overly obsessed with that one, straight-line stat).

I like this engine more for the possibility of adding it to the 5- and X-series lineups.

just a note, here it is straight from the mag's '06 330i review:

"As our exclusive test numbers show, [the 330i] is also very quick for a less-than-$40,000 compact sports sedan: 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds at 98 mph. Although these figures were recorded on a surface with poor grip, they match the performance of the current-generation 330i with Performance package with its much larger rear tires."

I don't know where some of you are getting your info. 001buster the Audi V10 is 5.2 liters and it is supposed to make 460hp in the RS6. The advantage: BMW M5. Most of you all said that the 335i is supposed to have 330 hp but yet the 0-60 times are not fast enough to make the engine worthwhile. Well if ANY of you read Car and Driver or Motor Trend, C/D says the 335i should have about 302 hp and have 0-60 times in about low 5 second range. Pretty good for a car that could beat its bigger brothers 550i and 760i. Plus Motor Trend says the next-gen M3 will have a 4.4 liter V8 making 440+ hp. Any of you all satisfied with those results.
