NO MORE GERMAN CARS - Now What Do YOU DRIVE???

A hypothetical question, but still a fun one to consider.  Agent 001 asked me a similar question during the interview process, and I couldn't answer. 

A world without BMW, Mercedes, Audi or VW.  Sure, all you Lexus fans out there are cheering the scenario, but lets face it, were it not for Mercedes and BMW, there probably wouldn't be a Lexus or Infiiniti either.  Heck, we wouldn't even have Acura come to think of it.

So the question is this, take the Germans off the market, and for fun remove Lexus and Infiniti as well and tell us and the world:

WHAT WOULD YOU DRIVE???

I will lead off by declaring that without the brands we all love (or hate) I would probably drive the Dodge Charger SRT8 or the Challenger SRT8.  Yeah yeah yeah, we can split hairs and say we wouldn't even have those cars seeing as they are based on the older MB E-class chassis, but we lets not get that technical today.



I think the Nissan Altima SE-R and Pontiac G8 GT would get more than a casual glance as well, but for me I think the Dodge vehicles get my nod.



So now you know my choice, now it is your turn to enlighten the rest of us.

Well if I had to choose Domestic's or Japanese only which I think is what you wanted everyone to choose (one or two from either), not Ferrari's or other premium marques, I'd be driving the new CTS-V, Escalade or Tahoe Hybrid.

If it was Japanese only, Nissan GT-R or Lexus GS450h.

I also like the King Ranch F-150's except the mileage is SO much worse (11-12 vs. 15-17) than the new GM's, I'd go GM.

If the economy forced us NOT to buy foreign vehicles. I would get the new G8 with the 6.1L and the wrangler unlimited. The new pontiacs are actually REALLY nice! I never thought it, but my friend got a g6 GT and it has everything you would ever need in a vehicle, and for the low $20k range!
The 4 door wrangler is the ultimate utility vehicle. family fun, goes through anything.

A firend of mine recently got a G6 and she loves it. I have had friends buy new Camry's, last gen Camaro, and RR that had problems and does not mean the whole line is screwed.

You can go to any Forum for any car and there are always people that have issues. Cars comps just have to lessen the potential issues or get bad press similar to above...

That review is actually misleading. The car tested was based on Korean market specs with the 3.8 V6. Apparently, Koreans like their cars to ride soft (think Buick). The US and European specs Genesis will be more to that reviewers liking and probably to yours as well.

He drove the base 3.3 V6 model with softer suspension and narrow tires, he seems to like the sound and the response of the engine. Then he makes a idiotic statement about how this car doesn't quite "feel" like a rwd car and that, turning off the VDC doesn't quite turn it off completely, then he goes on saying even if the VDC is "on", he detects the rear trying to "step out" huh? you just said this doesn't feel like a rwd car! what an idiot!

Personally, I'm very surprised how good this car looks, I even like the Aston Martin like double wing logo :) This truly will bring luxury for the common masses, and as Hyundais of late, it will be dead realiable.

The question is not asked to start arguments, but rather to invoke thoughtful conversation and ideas.

In terms of my own personal zeal, it only proves that I am human, and excitable as well in my own mis-spelling of Acura. Please note it has been corrected.

In terms of the "crazy Lexus fanboys" I was warned on day on of them, and for the most part they tend to be as passionate about their marque, as the German fan boys are of theirs. That is what makes this site so much fun, and so entertaining.

That said, were American vehciles the only available choice, I would be happy owning a Caddy CTS or Lincoln's 2009 MKS. Both offer nice design and some nice tech bits.

The fact that I note that were it not for Mercedes and BMW, there wouldn't be Lexus or Infiniti does not make me a fan boy or anything else. Whether you like it or not, read the literature both Lexus and Infiniti put out in 89-90 when TOYOTA and NISSAN launched the brands. The target at that point in time was MERCEDES BENZ and BMW.

So for me to make a statement that is based in fact does not make me a fan boy or bias or anything else. What is does is let you know that at least I have a modest handle on some automotive history.

Just for the record, I used to want a Lexus LS400 in the worst of ways, and at that time I was driving a BMW. So what kind of bias does that show???

I think I would probably go for the Grand Cherokee Srt8, or the F-150 Harley Davidson addition. I think that domestic brands generally produce quality trucks and muscle cars more than anything else.

Seeing that until recently jaguars have been Americanized, the new XF supercharged is an incredible car as well.

Say Agent 00J, to really jack with people you should have excluded vehicles derived from German mfg. So no Mini, no Bentley, no Rolls-Royce or Bugatti or Pagani. Not even the Dodges you mention since they are on the old E-class chassis. I probably missed a car or two, but you get the point.

Anyway, I have a Grand Cherokee and a SLK and now that I'm pretty much over my mid-life crisis, I need to dump my Jeep for something more practical (notice that I'm keeping the SLK) especially in consideration of the U.S. increasing gas prices and recession. So my choices are:

Toyota Matrix
Subaru Outback or Forester
Hyundai Sonata
Honda Fit
Chevy Malibu or Saturn Aura
(Bonus: a pre-GM Saab or a pre-Ford Volvo)

On a side note, even if the U.S. really didn't have the German mfg, I still would love to see Fiat, Citroen Peugeot and Renault back!

Packard, Pierce Arrow, Duisenberg, Auburn, Cord, Studebaker, Avanti.

I read that Studebaker tried to make a comeback in 2003, but GM sued them.

The big three forced these great car companies out of existence, perhaps they would have evolved to offer a better American product than what we have now.

That's the American Way, If somone builds a better mousetrap, just bury them under your strength and influence.

As I am not filthy rich, I shall stick to "real-world" cars for my choices - no Bentleys or Ferraris here. As no German cars or Japanese luxury cars are allowed. This "short list" is really short!

Here goes, in alphabetical order:
1) Cadillac CTS;
2) Jaguar XF; and
3) Pontiac G8 GT.

By the way, Agent 00J, I see nothing wrong with your hypothetical question. It says something about GM's recent revitalization efforts that two of the cars on my short list are GM products. Come to think of it, the Caddy and Pontiac would be on my "short list" even if the Japanase luxury brands and all of the Germans were available.

I must amend this "short list". I test-drove the Pontiac G8 GT this past Saturday. That Corvette engine is impressive, but the car lacks the refinement I have come to appreciate in my current car (Audi A8L).

The interior is crude compared to the Cadillac CTS and Jaguar XF, but the Pontiac costs quite a bit less so I shouldn't complain too much. However, there is no excuse for Pontiac not offering a navigation system on the G8. Also, the automatic transmission kickdowns slowly and harshly under hard acceleration. (That last criticism might have been because the car had only 230 miles on the odometer, thus not "broken in".)

As the rules for this game exclude Acuras, Lexuses (Lexi?) and Infinitis as well as German cars, I guess I would have to choose between the Cadillac CTS and the Jaguar XF.

I would drive the car I own - a 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8. If not that - I'd probably drive a Cadillac CTS-V. [The new one - with 550 h.p.] If not that - then a Nissan GT-R. Like steedpub said, the Prius is basically nothing more than a hippie's way to brag about how they're "saving the air". It really isn't that great of a car. My brother can get the same gas mileage as the Prius in his '02 Civic and that actually has horsepower that exceeds 100.

Here in Middle East, Chevrolet offers a middle east only model, Chevrolet CSV CR8. It's limited to 100 units. well it's not even that exclusive as in other markets like in Australia it's sold/rebadged as Holden HSV and in Britain as Vauxhall something.

Btw it looks cool, and got 400BHP. My freind got one 2 months ago, it's number 81. I drove it 2, 3 times
and it was very aggressive very fun to drive but crude something like a Corvette myabe it was the interior.

so i think if all Germans, Japanese and other my favourie cars are not there i'll pick something like a CR8, Corvette...etc and something luxury/comfortable i'll pick some Cadillac.

Obviously Jaguar XF, or probably the Cadillac CTS. If i have more money to spend, i would love to own the Aston Martin DBS, or a Ferrari F430.

Ok here it goes.... what I decided to do was to compare cars I own now which is a BMW 335i sedan and a Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5 and came up with the following:
"in some strange parallel universe, there exists only Japanese and American car brands. I would purchase a Lexus IS350 for the packaging and it looks fairly decent and drives alright. For my hatch needs I would get a Mazda 3 5dr"

But THANK GOD I DO NOT LIVE IN THIS PARALLEL UNIVERSE! LOL!

Acura TL, its what I chose after spending 4 days driving a brand new 330i in 2005. Just offered the best bang for the buck at the time, still does with all things considered. fuel economy, reliability, resale value, features, looks, and with performance too.

maybe someone should ask what would you drive if there were no Japanese cars, with the competition they are getting now that may not be as silly as it sounds, at the moment I drive a BMW, great car, not the best car I`ve owned but very good and better than any Japanese car I`ve driven

My next car is unlikely to be German and certainly won`t be Japanese, I`m looking at the new Seat with a 1.4 turbo diesel, mainly because it is a cheap and very economical car that is cheap to insure doesn`t cost a lot to register and can be driven in London without paying the congestion tax, also very good on the open road for long distances in Europe, if I was just driving around London I would be looking at a purely electric car

We don't know for sure if Boris will let sub-120g/km cars free from the C charge yet, he hasn't said anything. He does seem to be anti-£25 charge though.

Some good choices off the top of my head: Pontiac G8 GT, Infiniti G35 Sport, Mazdaspeed3. If I fit in the Lexus IS-F or Corvette/Z06, those would be on the list.

give up my 911 & drive s2000 on weekend, Accord for daily drive. If Mercedes,BMW,Audi & Porsche never exist in the world, NSX will be my Ultimate choice & MUST be Manual. New GTR is not in my list if it only come with paddle shift.
