NEW VOLKSWAGEN PLANT FOR THE U.S. - But in Which State???
Tennessee could be at a competitive disadvantage in a battle with Alabama over a proposed Volkswagen plant if government financial incentives turn out to be the key factor in the automaker's decision on where to build the facility.

Volkswagen said in April that it would decide in July whether to build a U.S. assembly facility, and that if it does, the plant would be built in Tennessee, Alabama or Michigan. The company has not commented on the deal since.

(As a sidebar to the article linked here, I would like to comment that I think VW should look long and hard at producing the Scirocco in the US for our consumption and enjoyment)

I thought that plant was going to be here in North Carolina. I have heard it on the news here and autospies even posted an article:

I think they ruled out NC b/c of Charlotte's pollution drifting north into the area they wanted to build.

Damn, I was hoping it was going to be in NC so I could find a decent job there.

I'd like to see someone issue a phony press release stating that the new plant will be in Michigan...just to get the UAW salivating.

How about South Bend, Indiana where they built the Studebaker Automobiles?

Or Hamilton Ontario where Studebaker built the Avanti Cars?

Ontario has many Steel Fabrication Plants and a big, modern Automotive Sector. Their manufacturing economy is booming compared with the US.

Tennessee has a governor that understands the importance of attracting business. As such, the state has been recently ranked number one for corporations to locate or relocate. We recently took away a major vacuum cleaner company from the state of Alabama (moved to Cookeville, TN). I can't imagine VW choosing AL over TN but maybe they will.

Montgomery Co. (Clarksville) Tennessee is lobbying hard for VW. Maybe they'll move there and build highly-efficient diesel engines for their entire fleet and even build the 65+ mpg Polo BlueMotion and a four cylinder diesel pickup there. Saturn is in Spring Hill and Nissan is in Smyrna (both near Nashville). Clarksville is way northwest of Nashville near KY. I think around Nashville would make more sense for them.
