Ford working on a smaller pickup under F-150

Good idea it is. The sales of Ranger have been up recently even though it is old and stale. The F-150 is a nice truck, but even in its most base form is a gas sucker. For many small businesses, that is the kiss of death.

Ford is bringing out the Transit Connect mini-cargo van this fall with a 4-cylinder which will do well. A new small pick-up with 4 and 6 engines should hit the sweet spot of the market.

The Ecoboost engines could make this a very fuel efficient compact/midsize. I am interested to see if a performance version will be offered.

Right on - the EcoBoost is going to be something else. Very exciting - can't wait to see what Toyota does to match.

How about the F100? That's an old name from a long time ago, and it starts with "F", so it meets the minimum criteria.

My 2 wheel drive model, with a 5.4L 300HP engine was great on gas! (3.53 Gear Ratio)

It is only the 4x4 models that guzzle gas.

The Rear Axle Ratio also plays a huge role in gas consumption. The 3.73 and 4.11 ratios guzzle gas, but this is because this gear ratio is designed for pulling very heavy loads and not optimal for highway driving.

People who say this vehicle sucks gas, probably drove a work truck on a highway, not its intended purpose.

People were smarter during the first oil crisis. They were knowledgeable about Manual Transmissions, 2WD, and Gear Ratios, and how they can be leveraged to provide fuel efficiency.

Very true. people are so misinformed about cars. It's so funny. I work as a mechanic when I have time off,a dn it amazed me how ignorant people are about cars! Oh an escalade is a cadillac, you can't work on a cadillac. I had to pull a tahoe up to his escalade to show him they are the exact same thing, inside the numbers are written different on the speedo, outside it has a different fron end that doesn't even match the res of the body. I am talking about the second generation too, not the third, although they are the smae at least they made them a little different. Diesel Version Coming! 50+MPG

The 2010 F-150 will have the New 4.4L Baby Diesel. With a 6 speed transmission 2WD I would expect 50MPG.

I can hear the consumers already. “Diesel, why would I want Diesel?” “isn’t that something Truck and trains use?”

Put down the crack pipe. Will it get good economy, YES. Not 50mpg.

The Jeep Liberty with the CRD 4 cylinder doesn't get anywhere near 50mpg, how in the world is a 4.4 going to do that. the Benz e320 with the 3.2 CDI doesn't even do that, and its a car! Come on now. I know you are a Ford guy, but don't make outrageous, ridiculous claims. I am a BMW guy but I don't think it is the best thing in the car world and I wouldn't say anything that far out. I'd give the F150 close to 30mpg, as it is a body on frame truck. Maybe a 2wd regular cab with a manual transmission might get 30.
