Pass The Crack Pipe Please! Lexus Prices The LF-A At $225,000
After three auto show appearances and the occasional spy photo and video from Germany's high-speed Nürburgring test circuit, it's no secret that the Lexus LF-A supercar concept is headed for production. With an estimated 500 horsepower coming from the LF-A's 5.0-liter V10, we didn't expect the Lexus to come cheap, but Inside Line has learned that the car will carry a price tag over $200,000.

Ben Mitchell, corporate product planning manager for Lexus, confirmed that the price of the carbon-fiber supercar "will begin with a two." And another Lexus source in Japan told Inside Line the price may be as high as $225,000

I'm using the IS-F as a benchmark for entering a segment by Lexus.

An excellent attempt, but still 4th out of 4 cars in the segment.

HOWEVER, the IS-F is more of a skunkworks car than the LF-A, so I hope the LF-A does better.

Obviously at $225k it needs to be the best. I think Lexus realizes that.

Toyota has mentioned there has been a decline in their overall quality level of late, but I don't think they have ever, nor would ever say reliability is not a big factor. I can't imagine any car company saying that.

And although "lowly Buick" and Lexus score comparitively, that's not as big of deal as Benz/Bimmer/Audi all placing below the Buick/Lexus rank is it?

thats absolutely correct. Luxury brands are modified for better high quality parts that will last longer. Even when building the cars at the plants the builder are more qualified than a non-luxury brand. Could you imagine the same type of builder build chevy vs Cadillac, or BMW vs Mini Coooper, or BMW vs. Rolls Royce, or VW vs. Audi, Mercedes vs.Maybach, or Maxima vs G35? And the answer to all these is no.

Luxury cars are build better and will last longer than a non-luxury car.

Every single innovation that has been done that dramatically put a dent in the auto industry has been done by europe. Lexus is for people that think they are driving all the cars above in that list. PERIOD. If you say it's a reliable car, then ok. So is a honda, minus the $200,000. Lexus is just a sheep in wolves clothing. Technologically it has achieved NOTHING. making your lights active with steering is not that big of a deal. AND, a few months ago I had heard a lexus commercial on the radio saying "doctors say you should get your heart rate up for good health, blah blah blah... so visit your lexus dealer". BMW had that same commercial when the e60 5 series came out YEARS ago. Not only does lexus bite off bmw's but they also help themselves to copying commercials. SAVE YOUR MONEY

True however they did it in a country that values posh over real performance gains. This is a whole nother animal here though. So far in every category Lexus competes in where performance is concerned overall they place at the bottom of the pack.

This does not mean they haven't targeted an untapped market here. If that is so, then they may teach us all a lesson.

TheBoss- LOL you think you have caught me there. My predictions (and they were VERY close) were for straight line performance only. As you are aware there is more than one aspect to consider and I was predicting theoretical 0-60 1/4 times.

You have to consider cornering, braking, and transient response. You can excel in a few of those and I dare say you may even be able to excel in all static tests, but when it goes on the track how well they all work together is the ultimate test. This is where many fail. They focus on the static tests not the overall package.

I'm sorry, but first of all, how many Lexus enthusiasts are there out there? Secondly, how many Toyota enthusiasts are there out there? Thirdly, even if there are a ton (which I doubt there are) they most likely will not have that kind of coin to drop on a car. Fourthly, how many people are gonna spend that kind of money on a Lexus even if they are not a Lexus enthusiast? Lastly, it costs well more than the R8, and probably more than the R8 V-10 will when it comes out, so why wouldn't you get that, or even a Ferrari. Can you imagine sitting at a light and an F430 pulls up next to you and laughs because you could have had his car, but instead you are in a stupid Lexus? The brand with the worst score, by the way, had 170 problems per 100 vehicles, or 1.7 problems per vehicle. So from best to worst, that’s a difference of just 0.79 problems per vehicle for the first three months of ownership. This range has decreased dramatically during the last five years or so; most carmakers are doing a great job of delivering a trouble-free vehicle at the point of sale.

ChicaneShooter, you're missing something big.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz (and Audi, while you're at it) didn't create the A3, A-Class and 1 Series to "dilute" their good names. They weren't developed simply so that there could be cheaper cars in the lineup, oh no. The fact of the matter is, they're absolutely necessary. Think about it: in some parts of Europe, with narrow roads, small parking spaces and super-expensive gas, would you rather drive a small Honda/Toyota/Peugeot etc or a small Audi/BMW/Merc? Those cars aren't considered "cheap." They possess most, if not all, of the high-end qualities of their larger cousins and are very enjoyable to own.

Lexus will never be able to "surpass in time" the prestige of Porsche, BMW, Audi, Merc (no matter what a silly 30-person survey says) as long as they ignore the European market and stick with their one lagging diesel and no small cars. Prestige doesn't only lie in price and feature content. It lies in a great company, with great management. I would go drive a 1 Series or A3 before spouting off like an ignorant fool.

I'm pretty sure when Acura introduce the NSX back in the 90's it was over 100k. It sold well when it was available, even though it was slightly underpowered compared to the others, it handled better and turned heads with its design. I still love seeing NSX's on the road, they sound great and perform awesome.

So whose to say Lexus cannot make a exotic car as well. The reason the NSX died out was because they never did anything different with it, ditched the flip up lamps, rounded some edges but kept the same engine and such, that is a big no no. So it died out and is now on the revival.

Are you sure Lexus is building this car to compete with Ferrari or to take on the NSX and put a nudge to Nissan to create an Infiniti version of the GT-R? Maybe they are creating a new segment for these guys that will reincarnate the BMW M1 to come to light.

Difference.... The NSX was called a Honda NSX around the world.
At the time Honda was doing extremely well in F1 and there is a long legacy of racing with Honda which translated into the NSX.

Lexus.... not so much.

Who gives a crap how much or where it sells.

Are you a shareholder?

If the car performs well, people like it, and god forbid it only sells well in the U.S. it will still be a success.

Weird how so many people love to write off a vehicle before it even comes out (GTR, LF-A, Genesis).

Hey morons, Ferraris are most overrated cars out there (BMW close 2nd). They only last a long time because owners invest thousands to keep them running and store them in heated rooms where they can baby it pose next to it.

You buy a Ferrari if you are the ultimate poser/badge whore. The car you do get is not that great, they're popular just because they have rich racing history (well deserved). Just look at the track times at Nordschleife, LF-A blitzes the track!

Buy the Lexus if you want to keep one hand warm, because you will never get the ass that the ferrari owner will get. ever. I have never had to take a second glance at a lexus. A ferrari will do it to me everytime. Oh, and it isnt that unreliable. How many ferraris have you owned? Ive known a few owners who bought the car second or even third hand and drive the thing 3 -4 times a week, which is a lot for a car like this. You dont have to buy the car to drive across the country. I would never drive the lexus lfa across the country, too many miles on a car that is worth 250k. Sounds pretty retarded to me. Oh, and quoting test mule times is also fairly lame. That car hasnt been confirmed to do anything at the nurburgring, so stuff those times up your ass. If you want to go by track times, lets throw up the Radicals times. Some of those are street legal.

The LF-A might be a great sports car, it might look, handle, and accelerate like the other exotics, but you do not just jump into this market. Lexus has forgotten how they eased into the premium market by offering all the luxury at a significant discount to build the name. They should have started with a 90-120K sports car with Lexus quality and supercar performance and worked their way up from there. You don't just jump into this market with no history.

Well I have not commented for a while, but this post is something that I need to express my opinion about. Surely the program folks at Lexus are smoking some serious bud if they think their brand can elevate its status by price. For starters, Toyota 'dependability' is currently headed in the direction of the crapper (hello new powertrains, platforms, etc.) so this supercar being a new foray should not assumed to be Toyota-like in terms of dependability. Next, the badge is a HUGE reason why people at this snack bracket buy these cars - it is not their 'only' vehicle so reliability is meaningless BTW - and at a dinner party it will still be uncool to say that they drive a Lexus which is still the child of Toyota. The reality is that the brand does not have the heritage or pedigree of the truly upper echelon brands. This vehicle MAY be the ultimate Lexus, but it does not rub shoulders with the elite like Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, Bugatti, etc. Regardless of the car, the brand does not carry the prestige necessary at this level of vehicle. Take a look inside the people driving an LS460, do you see those people headed into the LF-A. I don't think so.

How can the LF-A PRICE RUMOR be overpriced, yet, the other cars in this range are not? They all seem to have similar performance as the LF-A (presumed so far) so why is one overpriced and one is not?

Compared to the new GT-R, it is, all of the 200,000+ cars are then, but not compared to a car in the SAME PRICE RANGE! A $225,000, no matter who makes it, is still OVERPRICED....

Even if it's only $100K, it's a huge mistake for Toyota when a Nissan GT-R can be had for less even if there is a dealer mark-up.

But this will be a low volume car anyway (just like the GT-R). It's got comparable performance of other supercars which helps. But they shouldn't be shooting for $200K plus right off the bat.

Or equally as good, less Agent009 posts and more objective agent posts? The title is just inflammatory and it's not even in the article.

Anyways,

First of all, Rich people (millionaires?) who spend money on Exotics like the LFA don't give a chit if it's $150k or $250k. They want a car that is reasonably fast, looks hot (I do think the convertable LFA is sex on wheels), and rare.

The people complaining here are probably people making less than $300k a year. This car is made of Carbon Fiber. It will most likely be hand built for each owner and come in limited quantities (i.e EXOTIC).

Also, we don't even know the specs on the car yet and people are blasting it for how slow it will be compared to cars like the GTR or the Ferraris. Dude, wake up, Most Ferraris are not the fastest cars around. GT2 is not the fastest car around. You can play around with a grand national and get 1000HP on it. You could buy a Z06 and it'd be faster than most exotics. That's not the point.

you're right, someone rich enough to buy a $225k Lexus is probably also rich enough to buy a $225k Ferrari, a $225k Lambo, and a $225k Aston to go along with it.

That isn't the point most people are making though, the point they're making is that if you had to choose ONE of those $225k cars, why would someone choose the Lexus? Those buyers don't care how fast around the 'Ring the cars are, they're buying for prestige and image. A Lexus doesn't have that compared to those brands, period. That doesn't mean the LF-A isn't an amazing car, it's just a simple fact. Lexus isn't Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Aston Martin. And my guess is some of those very wealthy potential owners will take umbrage at the idea of driving their "exotic" into a dealership service department alongside teenagers in their 8 year old IS's.

Image. Prestige. Lexus has some, but not $225k worth.

(altho' i didn't think the lf-a was even on sale at the time that was written. it COULD have been projected price, and dealers were taking early orders.)

You can't just convert prices in other countries into American dollars - for example, the S65 AMG in Britain is nearly 300,000 dollars (145,000 pounds), and the LS600h is 160000 dollars (85,000 pounds). You can't use your own judgment of how much something is worth in another country based on the exchange rate. If the LF-A is 225000 dollars in the USA, in Britain it will most likely be around 160,000 pounds, or 320,000 dollars. Way overpriced.

honestly, who cares. the lf-a looks great to people who like lexus. it will perform at or close to the performance of the other super cars. I say, let them come out with it, charge $225k for it and see who buys it.

It will either have the success of the R8 or be a bust like the Phaeton. Unfortunately for Lexus by pricing the LF-A at $225k there is no middle ground. Bust or Boom for this puppy.

Lexus has a lot to lose and nothing to gain from this strategy. The LF-A will never have the following Ferrari or Lamborgini has in the first life cycle. The R8 doesn't even have that kind of following, the NSX barely has that following.

I agree that Lexus should've priced this in the low $100's and made the argument they grew on which was look at what you are getting for your $$$. Then let the next generation and generation after that creep up in price and performance until the reputation is solidified.

The most aspirational goal of this car is to build up brand recognition in the exotic wing of the automotive market, not to please a bunch of penny-pinching European car owners.

The End.

How can you say stupid things like that when NOTHING--literally, NOTHING--about this car has been confirmed by Lexus yet?

I love Lexus, but that's over priced. I worked for the company for 5 1/2 years and I believe they are the best mass production company out there, they truly do, do it right from the start. But the only, and I mean the only way you could justify that price, is if it is absolutely aproblematic, and it sounds like a F1 car. Otherwise, it's a $150k. Oh, and maybe if it were hybrid, that would be worth a few extra bucks also.

I'd also like to add..... Lexus is right up there with the best of them, but they are not in the Exotic arena yet, and that's exotic pricing. The GTR will blow the doors off that car, and it is not that expensive. Even though the LF-A will be way more luxurious, the luxury does not compensate for the price and good (not great) performance. It is a hot car though!

this car *should* be priced at 175K

its clear what they are trying to do. they want to make the brand more prestigious by charging more.

to those who say it should be in the low 100s are crazy. all carbon fiber body...it cant be close to the LS600Hl. its so much better than the LS...

Who would spend 225k for a Lexus? Well, people are already forking over 100k for a Lexus (LS600h) so what's a 100 grand more to the rich. Whether you agree or not, the rich do consider Lexus to be a premium brand.

I drive a Lexus but also have a Merc. I consider Lexus a premium brand. Although I don't think they are as prestigious..but that doesn't matter. They are what they are and it's been proven that they sell and are a hit among Americans consumers.

Japanese cars are for people who cannot afford German cars. No one can honestly say they would pick a Lexus over a Benz or BMW. Who would pick a rice burner over a European exotic. Morons. Lexus should stick to making anonymous appliances.

You comment has about 5 sentences. All of them are not only embarassingly stupid, they also have been proven incorrect.

Actually as a German fan, I can say that many have purchased a Lexus and jumped ship from the likes of Cadillac, BMW, & Mercedes. For pricing, comfort, and the reliability.

Lexus is far from the Big 3 of Germany in a world wide scale but in US soil they are dominant. Don't forget this brand was designed to take on the US Market and they have been very successful. If you live elsewhere then perhaps you could say people would buy a German over a Japanese car but if you live in the North America (Primarily in the States) you can't ignore the fact that Toyota's are everywhere. Japanese cars in general actually.

I'm sorry. Not many will pay that much for a Lexus. I'm sorry but the world has not come to this...$200K Lexus cars. That price range is dominated by the Germans and Italians we all know that. It's a price range the Japanese can't touch.

Their probably trying to upmarket themselves trying to fit in the with the rest. However, when I think about it. Audi has a perfectly capable R8 and their V10 coming out so that would be my choice.

The GT-R is the ultimate import car not the LF-A. Hands down.

lmao, who on earth would want to spend all that money on a lexus, simply riddiculous... for that money you can be aiming at more prestigious brands and cars such as lambos, ferraris etc...and brands that know what they're doing in the supercar segment

V-10 NSX and by the way Acura ranked higher than Lexus this past year in reliability in several sources Silver1!

I don't think the NSX would be in the same category as the LF-A. The LF-A is more luxury based whereas the NSX and the likes of GT-R are in the more sporty driving experience.

Not to doubt Lexus with the LF-A since they created a very capable IS-F but their Soarer and SC430 haven't gained any recognition as decent handling cars or best styled for that matter.

BUT!

There will be those fan boys who stay loyal and pick up one of these. I don't doubt it's going to be built well and it looks decent IMO. But the price tag should be strategically priced to go head to head against a Merc SL or a BMW 6er. There's no way Lexus can ignore it's direct competition and want to go head-to-head with Germany & Italy's best.

I wrote about this a month before this even was mentioned on Insideline.

On sale date: 2009 [Q3]
Production Units: Limited to 500 units, 150 assigned to JDM.
Price: 30 million JPY (around 300K USD)

300K USD! even more ridiculous. It's a pretty big risk for a consumer to fork out that kind of money on a brand that hasn't been too great with producing great coupes or sports cars. Not a great track record to set the price tag that high.
