80% of Americans use cell phones while driving
A recent survey conducted by Nationwide Insurance found that more than 80 percent of Americans use their cell phones while driving. 46 percent of American’s between the ages of 16 and 30 admitted to sending and reading text messages while driving. About the same percentage of those surveyed said they had been hit or almost hit by another driving who was on his/her cell phone.

Nationwide conducted the telephone survey last month consisting of 1,502 drivers. Almost half of those who were surveyed agreed that cell phones and other gadgets are the most dangerous distraction for drivers behind the wheel.

I agree witht he 92% stat, that it is equally dangerous to drive on the phone as it is to drive under the influence. At least the drunk driver is trying to drive.

Sadly, it seems everywhere in the US has become all about "ME" lately. Most people don't view other motorists as human beings, they are just a obstacle.

There are too many safety mongers and do-gooders who rely on flawed studies to bolster their argument. The danger is not in using a cell phone to talk, especially a hands-free phone. The danger is in taking your eyes off the road while looking down to dial a number. When the auto industry finally wakes up and installs a cell phone with speech recognition in every car, drivers need no longer take their eyes off the road to dial or text message.

Where is my argument?

I said I agree with the claim that 92% of the respondents said they thought DD is equal to driving on the cell. Sure hands free devices help. Not arguing that.

As an avid cyclist, I look directly at drivers that could potentially cross my path. When I see someone on a cell phone, I take special notice, as they are far more likely to ignore me because their attention is on their conversation, be it jotting down an address, number or simply in an emotional dispute.

This is my opinion, I am not trying to bolster my argument with this "flawed" study as you would call it.

The problem is that folks are more into their phone conversation than actual driving. It doesn't matter if the phone is hands-free or not. I cannot tell you the amount of times I was stuck behind someone driving 5mph below the speed limit chatting way on their cell-phone completely impervious of what’s going on around them.

This is just wrong. People should not take all the attention away froma meaningfull conversatin by tring to drive at the same time. They could say the wrong thing and start a fight, or god forbid, punch up the wrong #! People, just be smart, when you need to call, give that phone all your concentration. Driving at the same time is just dumb.

It's OK to use your cell phone while driving despite popular sentiment.

It is blond women who are a problem using cell phones behind the wheel. But they have been problematic long before cell phones came along.

and most of the cell phone related accident statistics have got to be young dumb chicks that all think that they are Paris Hilton talking and texting while driving. Bad habbits to have formed because eventually they will all be 45 and no longer hot...just dumb middle aged chicks who look rediculous chatting and texting while driving.
