Car companies don't admit mistakes, but Hiroshi Kajiyama doesn't have a problem fessing up to a few missteps. He's the chief program engineer for the forthcoming 2009 Mazda 6 and although his English isn't perfect, it's clear he knows the current car has problems.

Wont convert the lemmings that flock to the camcord, but sounds like it's leapfrogged to the head of the class. Not that that was hard to do, since the camcord being SO underwhelming.

i would take this over all of the other cars in the segment.

accord-ugly
Camry-boring and ugly
Malibu-jury still out
sonata-maybe in five years

i bet the the mazdaspeed version will be good too.

What a great mid-sized auto. Unfortunately, though not the fault of Mazda, the car's weight has increased too much to get really good mileage. This is due to the U.S. Govt's safety standards driving up the weight of all gars to ridiculous levels. The govt. forces the auto makers to have great mileage, and at the same time forces them to increase the weight of their cars. You can't have it both ways.

You can't have it both ways if you want to keep the prices where they are. Compared to what europeans pay for their cars (hell even us Canadians considering that the CAD is now equal to the USD), I beleive the consumer should be willing to pay for a *PART* of the environmental improvements either through the cars sticker prices or through higher taxes on fuel that would be used to fund R&D for fuel efficient technologies or as incentives to companies that equip their cars with such technologies. The government cannot have it all, the automakers cannot have it all, I don't think it's fair to think that the consumers can.
