Stud Or Dud? BMW Reveals M1 Homage Will Enter Production
The July issue of CAR magazine will reveal later today that BMW has given the green light the M1 Homage Concept to enter production.

While the radical design stays close to home on replicating the essence of the classic M1, it just makes me wonder if it strays too far from BMW tried and trued philosophy of design.

Is it simply too radical, or is that just part of the problem? 

Rest assured unlike the previous the M1 built in Lamborghini factories in the 80's, this latest rendition will be solely an in house project most likely powered by a V10 derivative. The target audience for this new super car is the exact same as Audi's successful R8, so lets get set for a showdown of these two German giants once it hits the showroom floor in late 2009 or early 2010.

With all of this flexing of German muscle I am beginning to wonder just how the Lexus LF-A will stack up against this dynamic duo.   While it is safe to say the luxury and automation will lean in the favor of LF-A, it just seems a mere 500 hp won't be enough to keep up when it comes time to stretch the legs.


So is the M1 Homage going to be a A Stud or a Dud?

I don't love it from every angle, and it doesn't fit into BMW's current design philosophy, but the dynamics will undoubtedly be up to R8/Porsche-like levels of perfection so it should be interesting. I'm guestimating it will have the M5's V10, or perhaps the bi-turbo V8 with more power, and that it will be $150K.

As For It Not Fitting Into BMW's 'Current Design Philosophy', I Say Good... It's Time To Move Beyond Today's Bangled Bungles and Onto Something Much More Dynamic and Aesthetically Pleasing.

I disagree, I quite like BMW's current philosophy and I'm interested to see it evolve with time rather than another "revolution." The 6 Series, Z4 and X6 are rolling art, whether you like them or not, and all of their cars outfitted with "M" bodykits look fantastic.

I know exactly what the Pantera is. It and the M1 had always had very similar side profiles, but the M1 was built by Lamborghini and had nothing to do with De Tomaso.

Funny how things come full circle. Now Audi owns Lamborghini.

Yes Audi assists the development of Lamborghinis. Lamborghini is unhappy with the results and has said that future models will not rely as heavily on Audi sourced parts. You can find the quote on your own.

The only car Lamborghini is "unhappy" with is the Gallardo, mostly because of its dated-looking interior (has the same nav system, climate controls as my S4) and the fact that the R8 is superior. Yes, they will be using less Audi parts in the future, but not under the hood--only in the cosmetics.

and for your information the BMW x drive system is much better on snow than the Audi Quattro system. Do some research first, then come and play with the big boys.

I wanna see your research 1st. if you claim that xdrive is better than quattro, then why didn't BMW compete them in the rally segment? as far as I'm concerned, their awd is permanent and BMWs is really a part-time system, similar to haldex.

and I can't believe the mentality of these so-called "car enthusiasts" that post stuff in this place called autospies. the next thing will happen will be a lexus LFa article with idiot fanboys saying crap like "this thing will beat the ferrari reliabily and with better mpg..." when no one but toy/lex engineers has been testing it as others bash it with ignorance by saying "lexus can't make a supercar worth trying, they don't got the prestige, it'll be cheaply built and run like crap, etc". why can't we make judgements when it comes out, let alone for all cars that will come out in the future?? you're making yourself look like sh**. and agents, most of us can't make judgements if we haven't seen it in real life. and get off the lexus and bmw payroll!

I have to admit that I don't see a catfish in there...

I do, however, think that the front sort of looks like a stylized chipmunk- they managed to turn the kidney grille into the buck-toothed grille. in my opinion.

I don't know...I sort of vacillate about the car, I liked it when I first saw it, then the 80's and 90's got involved and my opinion changed...now I don't know what to think. For the moment let's just say that my opinion is defined by ambivalence.

I'm sure they'll run into safety regulatory issues with the headlamps and tail lights. It definitely sits apart from the BMW family with it's agressive aesthetic look. Certainly the prod version will be toned down. I think it'll be a stud if/when it's in prod.

M5 V10

6.0 V12 (CS concept)

Endless possibilities. As for 009's comment "is only 500 hp enough to beat the LFA," isn't the LFA supposed to have 500 hp? The bimmer will probably beat it to production anyway as the Lexus doesn't appear to be making any progress

Listen,

I admit that my sensibilities run to the classical, but I have many friends who are very much into modern. As a result I have been to Roche Bobois more times that I can count, and I have met people they know who are on the board of modern art museums.

The thing that defines a modern artist is a fundamentally different approach to something. This car has been done before- it is an homage concept after all- and your bombastic pontification that this object should be excused as artistic and avant-garde is complete bull sh$t. The design is fundamentally hackneyed- it DOES look like it is in the wrong decade.

I don't know if I like the car yet, but I do know that I am not delusional enough to believe it is an artisitc masterpice.

There is a bit more to it than that which I wasn't going to add because it just convolutes the whole thing, but I guess it is important enough.

That different approach, in particular for objects that undergo anthropomorphization , cannot challenge the fundamentals of beauty- it cannot be too confrontational. That is the difference between different and strange.

That M1 Hommage is fantastic, it is so close to the original M1 but with some new design elements. We all know that the real new M1 or Z10 or what they will call it, will not look like that, this is just made to celebrate the 30. aniversery for the original M1.

How many of you do even know or have seen an M1? not many i guess. But it was a great car in the late 70s and beginning of the 80s, it raced a lot on tracks. BMW had to built a street version of it to get in the race (thats the rules or was then).
