BMW announces X1 production at Leipzig
For those that keep asking us - yes, the BMW X1 is real and it has been confirmed by CEO Reithofer himself. And today BMW confirmed that it will be building its X1 SUV at its Leipzig plant in Germany, which is now capable of assembling 700 cars a day.

“The exact time point of production start and the market launch of the X1 will be revealed at a later date,” BMW said in a German press release.

BMW also said on Friday that it plans...

"Also, isn't Leipzig in the former East Germany? Why is BMW producing this car here? They're not going to get any quality of that production line given the unskilled and uneducated laborers of the east."

People from the former East Germany and Eastern Bloc are some of the most hard-working people I know personally. Your stupid, ignorant and totally moronic posts are beginning to show your intelligence, namely that you have none.

The former East Germany is booming with factories from Western Germany and international conglomerates given the HIGH QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP, safety and relatively cheaper costs.

MT, stop using the Toyota "green" halo. BMW caters to a different market niche that you can't understand. Lexus is so boring. Go hug your Camry 350H.

"Are the Germans so desperate for sales or just reading the market wrong? We don't need SUVs"

Perhaps on of the dumbest comments of the day. Take a look at your precious Toyota who most likely sells more SUV then all the German manufactures combined, and the majority aren't hybrid. Just because you build the Prius doesn't make it a "green company".

Looks like it could be a nicer X3

I don't understand the point of a smaller X3. BMW is trying to get cheaper cars out there for any one to drive. Get ready for a whole bunch of BMW posers out there in 128i's and X1's, talking up a storm because they now drive a Bimmer. What we need is a $80,000 850i, keep the lower and middle class out of the BMW's and keep it an upper class car.

Seems like BMW are terribly after sales. X1? That's shameful. That's too low category, BMW should not have gone below X3.

And we care they make the X1 in Leipzig because....? Another one of Agent001's BMW PR rhetoric.
