Audi Sales Slide 2.9% In May

Audi of America, Inc. announced today auto sales for the month of May totaling 8,534, a slight decrease of 2.9% from last year’s figures, however, the brand expects to record an increase in market share for the month. Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales continued their record-setting trend; compared with last year’s May figures, CPO sales rose to 3,364 units, an increase of 42.7%.

“Our recent advertising and marketing campaigns have driven consumer awareness and consideration of Audi to record levels,” said Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president, Audi of America. “With dealers reporting strong traffic, nearly 12,000 consumers chose to buy Audi in May. I look forward to continuing this trend as more consumers experience driving and owning an Audi.”

As auto buyers nationwide adjusted to high gas prices and a tighter economy, Audi’s combined offering of luxury and fuel economy bucked industry trends.  Nationwide, Audi sales of the A4 jumped 21.5%, the A4 Cabriolet grew by 12.5%, and the TT continued its successful run with a 5.1% increase.

To date, Audi has sold 36,820 vehicles in 2008, a 2.9% decrease over the previous year; CPO sales for 2008 total 15,454, an increase of 45.5% over 2007.

Wow, the A3 took a plunge. I said it last month, but it still surprises me. It's a fun to drive car with reasonable gas mileage. Overpriced? Maybe a little, but I'm sure there are deals to be had. What am I missing?

The lease payment on an A3 is 100 more then an A4 and American consumers still associate size of car and lease payment. A4 is bigger and has a lower payment and the numbers don't lie. A4 up 21.5% even though it's about to be replaced with a compltely new model in less then 3 months!

I have family that work at Audi/VW headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI. The A3 is a very fun car. I bought one through the family purchase program. One thing that will help their sales is they are going to do major refresh on the upcoming A3 due out sometime this September. It will look more aggressive with a tad more horsepower in that 4 banger. The other factor that sometimes turns people off is the price. This car is not a cheap car compared to other models or Japanese cars in that category. People could have a Honda Civic or Toyota for far less than $30k. And with the A3 and the 3.2 six cylinder and Quattro, the price of the A3 can climb very quickly to mid-upper $30's. It's a fabulous and fun car to drive. The quality on their interior materials used is exceptional. I think Audi will be just fine with the model enhancements and upgrades forth coming.

Ah, that makes sense. I've never leased, but it is about the same price and fuel economy as an A4 and has less room. Not an issue for me, the size, but apparently the depreciation hit is worse for the A3? I'm still considering the '09 A3, since they added quattro as an option with the 2.0 liter engine.

Audi needs to step its marketing of the A3. This is the perfect entry level premium car for today's high gas prices. You get solid fuel economy with no compromise in luxury and design.

A3 no, but Q7 is still the second best selling model for Audi and A5/S5 was never meant to be a volume seller.

Also the A3 isbuilt in much smaller numbers than the A4.
I expect a good surge in sale of the A3 with the 09 model and if the gas prices kkep climbing, but again, production is limited for the States because the A3 is so popular in Europe!

I don’t see any point in paying big bucks to own an Audi, unless you get an A8L.

With the US automakers confused, and only market
driven, they are making the decision for the customer, which I really dislike. econoboxes don't work for everyone, especially business people who work from thier car.

If the big American cars go, the A8 may be my only choice, even if I have to finance one for 10 years to afford one. I’m thinking A8L Diesel may be in my future someday.

It’s a shame the US automakers don’t build cars for various segments anymore. They look at the entire market and only keep the models that are popular and more recently the ones that bring the highest profits. This is a Great idea for shareholders, lousy for customers.

One shouldn't read too much into the sales figures for one month. However, it is interesting to note that, while May was a disastrous month for most marques, Audi sales figures for May are only slightly lower than last year, and VW sales are actually up a fraction of a percent.

The new A4 is already doomed. The new A4 is seriously down on power and performance when compared to the 335/G37/IS350. Even though the A4 will be the weakest performer by far when compared to the competition, It will also be one of the most expensive. Not a good recipe for success IMO. Good luck Audi. You are going to need it.

I’m not a EuroGuy, but Audi is building a lot of car for the money and giving value, which is almost unheard of from Eurobadges. Look at the S5. You can get an S5 for about the same cost as a Corvette. It is a tough choice, but you can do more with the S5. It has more room to take the car on vacation, it has a fairly luxurious interior for driving to work or the office. The gauges are perfect. The dash needs some A8 woodgrain though. BMW just doesn’t give much for the money anymore. Even modest BMWs are well beyond $50K USD which breaks the household budget of most Americans, at least those with families. Opt for the M performance models and you are in the Stratosphere.

It seems to me that more and more BMW owners are looking at Cadillac for performance and a more plush ride. Now that said, I do still like BMW. I like the idea of a large sedan having a manual gearbox, which BMW has done so well, and the US cars makers are just plain dumb about.

A friend of mine has a 3 series. Loves the car, but hates the seats.

Another friend of mine bought an A6 with a stick over the BMWs . he loves it. Says the car becomes part of you, an extension of your body. He loves driving it.
