So the xf is already outselling the m and gs, both of which have multiple models, engines and drivetrains? How embarrassing, for them.

What I cant figure out is how you justified the buyer driving off the lot in a loaded ES versus a GS. Isnt that like saying buy a loaded DTS because its a better price than a loaded STS?

Yes, sparky, but my point was both of the jag's engine options are big gas-swilling V8's and that there is no 'economical' base engine choice like with the japs.

I saw the XF on the road the other day and was pleasantly surprised. The photos didn't do much for me but in person its a different story. Overall shape is definitely Lexus like but the details really stand out. I'm still conflicted about the rear end and not a big fan of that chrome horizontal bar b/w the tail lights.

That is what I've heard, but even a "winter mode" on a RWD car might not be the same. Are you sure about that? If so, why hasn't it been more widely publicized?

Don't most RWD cars have a "snow mode" that mimicks 4WD (but with only 2 wheels to shift power to, of course)

You're still going to have a hard time climbing a steep icy slope in the middle of January with a RWD car.

The winter mode reduces the responsiveness of the throttle to reduce wheel spin. It will help im winter driving but it won't be as effective as awd. If you live in a hilly area with lots of snow, the winter mode might not work well. If you live in a flat area, the winter mode w/ snow tires might be sufficient.

Gearing Is what I meant

This is a little off-topic, but apparently a lot of Ford Motor Company executives had to turn-in their free corporate vehicle--many of them Jaguars and Land Rovers--as a result of the JLR sale to Tata this week and get back into a Ford or Lincoln. Bummer.

Wait until you see all the Jaguar Land Rover employees driving Fords and Freelanders trading down to Tata Nano or Indica. (LOL)

Maybe but they came up with X400, made X350 look like X300 without any of the Jag quirks (remember the fuel cap location?) while managing to spend a cool Billion dollars AND most of all GORGEOUS which meant brand euthanasia in Ford speak.!!!

Over the past decade there have certainly been some mistakes at Jaguar, but not all of them are Ford's doing.

The mistake that is definitely Ford's doing is the X-type, which they essentially forced on Jaguar. That abomination did immense damage to Jaguar.

The XJ losing some of its unique features, while remaining too retro is Jaguar's fault. I would also like to add the list of things that were unique and I like but were removed; in addition to the fuel cap location (although you have to know how to fill it, otherwise the jack keeps kicking off the fuel), the reverse opening hood, and the single wiper blade.

Resale value is what kills Jaguar sales.

Not any more the Jaguar right now is the fastest rising Premium car in resale while all the others Like BMW and Lexus and Audi are all falling. I have the article but not on my home computer. I'll post it on Jaguar Newswire tomorrow.

I believe you but you should know that these articles about resale values don't hold any weight on the real market.
For example Acura TSX was always given as an example of high resale value but in reality their REAL trade in value was always extremely low.
On the other hand BMW resale value was always strong and right now is as strong as ever. As long as you see them offering a 3 series for 330$ a month you can be sure that their resale value is fantastic. Anyway I wish the best for Jaguar.

Resale has always been low on cars at the high end.
I think they lose their status appeal for the market where that's important.

Works great for me ... I buy them with 100k miles for 1/10th the new cost.

Jag's historical resale was low due to reliability issues due to the materials in the engine seals and other non-metallic parts. That was all fixed in the 1980's but took till the 1990's for word to get around that they were now "modern" cars that don't leak oil after a couple of years.

Used-vehicle prices are slumping in the United States, just as cars and trucks coming off lease are crowding the upscale pre-owned market. Luxury international used vehicles now are selling, in some cases, for thousands of dollars less than the automakers expected. For example, last week, BMW AG said it had taken a $372 million charge to reflect falling U.S. resale prices, according to the Automotive News. Sales volume isn't BMW's problem. I appreciate the well wish but your thesis is flawed. As long as BMW offers $330 leases their residuals and resale will continue to decline. As a result of artificially low leases that are subvented by the manufacturer BMW has run in to a brick wall. Their cars are not worth what the payoff is on the cars at lease end so the used B<MW market gets flooded because its cheaper to lease a new one than buy the car off lease. Its not worth what the buy out is. There fore BMW is going to be a casualty of its own greed. Too many car coming off lease that they have to absorb the difference on is a nightmare. Its also happening to Lexus and Mercedes.

I don't know where you got your information but I can tell you that you are wrong. BMW makes huge profits from the cars that are lease returns. Yes, BMW resale value is just that good.

Agreed, and a good point. BMW and MB having subverting leases to push volume, and now they are paying for it dearly. The goal should always be profitability first even if you sacrifice volume for it. That is why Audi has been able to avoid some of this fall-out. A 378+ million write-off is just plain a result of greed. No pay the piper.

I read the article on the XF Supercharged in MT, wonderful car. It even won out in a comparo done recently as well. Fantastic looking car, great little gadgets and trim. And offering only V8s in the US is a nice plus.

Ford should never have let go of Jag, look at the sales they are missing out on. dorks.

The reality is that Jaguar was and should never have been part of the Ford culture.All it did was confuse the issue with Lincoln.The X type was a terrible move for Ford. The S type was a Lincoln LS. It really made no sense. Ford did a good job on reliability issues with Jag so it has to be given some credit.Unlike VW Ford simply did not no how to market a high end luxury car maker. VW prooved it can be done with Bentley Bugatti,Lamborgini,and Audi.Ford is now struggling with Volvo even though they are using a lot of their platforms.It will be interesting to see how long it takes Ford to sell off Volvo. I predict with in a yr.

The Lincoln LS is an S-type. Not the other way around. The LS was launched in 99. It borrowed Jaguar's AJ-V8 which was designed entirely by Jaguar and launched in 96 in the XK8. and used a Jaguar designed suspension. All DEW 98 cars have some Ford parts but all major components are from Jaguar in these cars. The DEW 98 platform was co-developed by Jaguar and Ford. This platform now belongs entirely to Jaguar.

Jag are right back on top these days, the XK and XJ are easily the best in their class. Bring on the new XFR, XJ and F-Type, can't wait.

They only use more gears, the Jag has six and the BMW/Merc have 7 gears, nothing to do with quality at all, just closer gear ratios and lower final drive... Anything more than six gears just gets annoying!!

The XF is a lovely car, inside and out. I've test-driven it, and it is very nice. One nice touch - in spite of that low-looking roofline, my head doesn't hit the ceiling, even with a sunroof. That transmission gear selector is really cool. I only wish the paddle shifters were made of magnesium or aluminum instead of plastic.

I do have one problem. The standard XF comes with a 4.2-liter 300-hp V8, and is perfectly adequate for my needs. However, the standard suspension is a little too soft for my taste. The supercharged XF has a tauter suspension that handles better, but that 420-hp engine is a bit of overkill for me. I wish that Jaguar would offer a sport suspension option for the standard XF. Maybe they will offer that in the future.
