BMW wins! 1-2 Finish in F1 Canadian Grand Prix

Rober Kubica and Nick Heidfeld finish 1-2 in the Canadian Grandprix.

Kubica now leads the championship points.

Robert Kubica’s consistent 2008 performances paid off in a big way in the Canadian Grand Prix, with the Pole taking his and BMW Sauber’s maiden Formula 1 victory in a historical day for the Swiss-German team, which also posted its first-ever 1-2 finish as Nick Heidfeld took the second spot.

Red Bull’s David Coulthard finished third, securing his first podium since Monaco ’06, while Toyota’s Timo Glock grabbed a career-best fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Jarno Trulli in the second Toyota. Honda’s Rubens Barrichello scored for the second consecutive race in seventh, ditto for Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel in the eighth spot.

The race was marked by a near-comical mistake by polesitter Lewis Hamilton, who ran into the back of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen on the 20th lap when the Finn stopped at the end of the pit lane behind Kubica due to a red light. Both men retired on the spot.

"I saw the two guys in front battling in the pitlane and all of a sudden they stopped," Hamilton explained. "I saw the red light but by the time I stopped it was too late. I apologize to Kimi if I cost him the race, but these sorts of things happen."

On the podium, the Polish national anthem was heard for the first time in F1 history.

"It is fantastic to win for BMW Sauber," Kubica said. "We grew up together and thanks to the team providing a good car we managed to do first and second. Maybe our pace is still not best as I couldn't match Lewis's pace. [But] it is fantastic for me, the team, my country and my fans.

"Winning in Canada where I had big shunt last season and [achieving] the goal to win a grand prix this season... We have done it and I'm leading the championship, so I hope the team will give me 100 percent support to defend it until last race."

Btw it was not as dominating as it appears(1-2 finish) as that idiot Hamilton also contributed in their win. Taking both himself and Raikkonen out in the pit lane. What a stupid mistake. Terrible.
Otherwise i think it would have been Kimi or Hamilton fighting for the win.

anyway great job BMW-Sauber. I hope to see them winning many more and give great competetion to Ferrari and Mclaren.

Kubica qualified 2nd and was waiting with Raikkonen at pit exit. Oh, but Kubica had no chance. Don't forget, points lead would be more but Kubica got taken out of podium finish at Australia by Kaz Nakajima.

Sorry guys I disagree due BMW in the last years, most of the time when they win , is just because they are luckie. For the las years MB-Mclaren and Ferrari and evne Renault is doing a better job in the tracks, (thats hurts but is the whole true), are the dominant teams. Beside the mistake of Hamilton and the one that hits his car, this was just a good luck, see the videos and you´ll understand. Please, if you do any comment bring numbers and facts, I won´t reply to emotions.

I think I translated your horrible english...anyway.
This is an impressive result for BMW this is only there third season as a chassis and engine manufacturer. The fact that they are competing so closely with Ferrari and Mclaren who have been in the sport for decades is amazing. The fact that Hamilton crash out only ensured victory for BMW, but Kubica qualified 2nd, and during the pit stop where Hamilton crashed Kubica was leaving the pits ahead of Hamilton, so who knows how it would have played out. Anyway a win is a win, its like saying the only reason Hamilton won in Monaco is because Ferrari had a bad race.

BMW has been involved in Formula on for some time, but mainly as an engine manufacture.As an Engine Manufacturer they had won championships in the 80's(while producing the most powerful F1 engine ever) and early 2000's(with williams). Now that they produce there own chassis and engines they can do everything there way. Its there third year of BMW doing it there way and its clearly paying off, and you know they will only get stronger.

Numbers and facts for Yonder7. Your clearly and Audi fanboy which makes sense your hating on this thread. Where is Audi in F1 the pinicle of motorsport. All other major car manufactures are present in F1 but the VW group(and the american 3).Maybe the competition is to much? Le Mans 1999 was the last year there were numerious full factory efforts from major car manufactures including MB,BMW,Toyota,Nissan,Audi. In 1999 BMW won the 24 hours of le mans, toyota in second, Audi lost. After 1999 four of the five full factory effort teams(nissan=renault) moved to F1 leaving the Le mans series. And what a supprise Audi started winning once all the full factory competition left for F1. Audi stayed behind with its full factory effort racing private teams with a fraction of the budget that Audi had....that hard fought racing cred. Hats off to Audi.lol.

10 years ago maybe.. today... nope.
It is actually the Le Mans series and German DTM.
As a business, yes, F1 is superior and we are seeing today unfortunately what it is doing to the sport.
As entertainment, it does not come even close to Le Mans series or DTM; as a fan of all 3 sports, I am sorry to say I don't find F1 exciting as it used to be.
Le Mans and DTM are for more entertaining and lately LE Mans is bringing in huge amount of crowd and T.V viewers even here in the States (Where the U.S GP was cancelled...hum, hum..) are breaking all records.
Even DTM is starting to pull bigger crowds than F1.
On a technology stand point Le Mans is much better as all the technology that Audi put into it's Le Mans car have ended up on their street cars.
F1 technology... not so much.
By the way, in 1999, Audi finished 3rd at Lemans.. not so bad and the year after it kicked BMW's butt in the American Le mans series with the new car.
Why go in F1???
Look at TOyota... spend more $$$ than Ferrari in the program and look at the results....nothing.
Even Honda will pull out soon.
Beemer had a lucky win today; if it had not been for Hamilton.. They will get better, no doubt, but this is just one race.

Thats b/c after 99 the BMW was a private team, while the audi was a full factory effort.BMW move on. To F1.

Give credit where its due...there is a bit of luck in all races. BMW has been consistently at the podium all season. A win was a matter of time. If you check the standings, kubica is the overall leader in the drivers standings and team BMW is only a couple of points off the leader (ferrari).

This win by the Bimmer boys was just a matter of time. Kubica has been sniffing the tires of Ferrari and McLaren since last year, and would probably have won this year anyway.

That said, the people here calling Hamilton "stupid" and an "idiot" need to check themselves -- if you've never made an error on your job, I'd like to congratulate you as the first human to never make a mistake.

What is stupid is having an "open" pit lane but having it "closed" on the pit out. A red light at the end of an open pit lane is ridiculous. If conditions are right for the pits to be open, it should be completely open, no red lights or anything. This means Raikkonen and Kubica would have been gone and Hamilton and Rosberg would have been as well.

I'll be more charitable to Lewis and just call it "brain fade."

That´s true, Audi is not in F1 as BMW. You are wrong I fan of MB, BMW and AUDI , in that order, However the fact that MB is my favorite does not make a blind person. BMW is great in chasis and F1 engines, AUDI is doing a great job and in many aspects, better than BMW and MB. That´s the reason because you and me drive better cars...also, hate LEXUS if you do not have perspective, but to be a "newbie", they are too near of the three Big Germans to be comfortable. If AUDI is so good without F1 participation, just imagine if they were on F1.....regarding the mistake of Hamilton, he is human, this is not the first error on F1 and won´t be the last one from him or from any other pilot. Regarding Renault, that´s a French car, but I feel that they doesn´t know how to apply in their products what they they learn on F1.
