Peugeot Diesel Smashes Audi's LeMans Track Record By Over 7 Seconds!

Congrats to Peugeot. These records are a nice to thing to brag about, but i think they tell only a part of the story. Lemans is about endurance and not outright speed. I think Audi could have built a slightly faster car to compete with peugeot but the difference is that the Faster peugoets dont last as lnog as the Audi and thus dont make it to the end. Im sure most companies can build an engines that run very fast and hard for a short period of time, but to make it reliable when pushed for many hours on end, is much harder to do.

The Audis will have to rely on reliability. The #7 and #9 Peugeots were involved in heavy accidents, so Audi has to hope that it rattled and broke some parts...

I hate it when people make me defend a product that i dont even like that much. I dont know about them screwin the wheels on right or not but somehow they managed to take every single 24 hour endurance race since 2000, except in either 03 or 04 when they lost to the Bentley speed team. Granted alot of the competition left, but this story is refering only to peugeot and audi anyway.

Don't forget that the Bentley won with an Audi engine! (All VW brand)

I was refering to the 24 hour endurance, hence my point about the lasting long, starting to understand genious?. There were no wins for the 908. Pop the tapes back in and enjoy the race.

But not when it counted. Audi takes Le Mans for the 8th time, 5th time in row, with Peugeot taking 2nd and 3rd only because of some Audi errors in the last minute or it would have been Audi 1-3. Congrats Audi once again on a great win and furthering your storied and legendary motor sport heritage.

So, with the Peugot diesels that much faster than the Audis, and the Audis faster than anything gas-powered, how far back does this put the gas-powered cars from the leaders?

Well, lets face the truth. I think Audi has a great competitor. But then again I don't respect Peugeot since they copied and improved the winning formula. Audi was the one with the guts to put diesel on the race track while everyone was laughing at them. The same story with quattro.

They were the first to win with the diesel( I should've clarified myself, sorry). Not exactly was everyone laughing at them but the critics were pretty "loud" if I remember correctly. My point was Peugeot only copies good ideas.

Interesting how Agent001 doesn't post anything regarding Audi's Le Man's win, but if BMW wins some no name race it's plastered all over autospies.

Yes, I know the peugeots were faster, but at the end, the Race set up of the Audis helped, especially with the rain.

The facts are that Audi entered Le Mans when BMW was competing in the top prototype class and then BMW, intimidated, left Le Mans. Another fact is that Audi does not control who decides to enter Le Mans, Audi simply is commited to racing against anyone that dares. Over the last 8 years no one has dared until now, and even now they do it by (attempting to) copying Audi's formula. It seems that any series that Audi enters (24LM, ALMS, DTM) BMW leaves. Why is that? Coincidence?? hmm, makes you wonder. Last I checked Skoda and Alfa (Touring) are small time competitors, and F1 is an embarrassment not having won any championship. Should I go on?

Re Peugeot, I have no respect for them, they attempted to follow a winning formula and failed miserably (2 years running). Their cars are a compromise of a design that is not even suited for endurance racing. Not very smart in my opinion.

Hey bozo, why don't you call your friends at BMW (as I assume you are highly influential there) and tell them to spend tens of millions of dollars and create an actual competitor to Audi's LMP1 R10 racers, not to mention Peugeot's 908s. Since BMW rules the motor sports world according to amazing idiot, then it should be no problem for BMW to spend the 100 million like Audi to come in compete. "I hear crickets chirping from Munich". Also, check out the results of the Italian GT races as well for a bit of a surprise.

I have no problem giving credit where credit is due. Congrats on Audi for winning again at this prestigous event.
What I do have a problem with is people saying that the R10s are reliable and that the 908s are not when the 908s finished 2nd and 3rd.....
Have a little humility and respect for a worthy opponent, because it might come back to bite you in the ass later.......

You miss my point MaindrianPlace. As you can see from these posts, there is a immediate need by some ignorant fools like amazingidiot to denegrate or lessen a win because it was by Audi. My hats of to BWM and Saber for their win at Montreal. Your negative attack against me was petty at best without knowing what I actually meant. Le Mans 24 hour is the triple crown of racing. To lessen it and say Audi did not deserve the win because somehow it cannot put the technology, etc. shows very little class or very little understanding of the difficulty to race at Le Mans. Winning it 8 times is a major achievement in the legendary category. The Pugs did wonderful and are extremely fast. Audi will have to answer this next year when the release the new R10s with covered cockpits. I am sure Audi is waiting for this. Winning F1 is great and but it isn't greater than winning Le Mans 24 hours. All great marquees race at Le Mans one time or another in their history. So, you have to give credit where it is due as you seem to not want to give Audi the credit it deserves. Tom Kristensen is a remarkable driver and put it down against the Pugs when needed placing him in the history books. Again, congrats to Audi on another remarkable win against faster competition. Whether it rains or not is not an excuse. YOU must be prepared for the all conditions in endurance racing. So, the Pugs were 7 seconds faster at qualifying. But last time I checked they are not standing atop the podium.

No problem MaindrianPace, I believe in good discourse and you have solid knowledge about motorsports. I like F1, but it seems a bit convulated for me in terms of crowning a champion. Though, I love to see the F1 machines in actions. It always cracks me when someone says Audi has no competition in Le Mans. Well, why not? If BMW thinks its the greatest thing since sliced bread in motor sports or to cars as per their commercials, then have them bring on a LMP1 racer. LMP1s are some of the most sophisticated and complicated machines to execute yet alone to win year in and year out with. Would love to see BMW in DTM challenging their German competitors. F1 competition isn't that strong either.
