I sat in the X6 today at a motorshow.

Tiny and claustrophobic in the back, my head was brushing the roof, and it was very ugly.
The Volvo XC60 (UK premiere) was there too and it was very nice. Looks good as well.

i agree the XC60 is very nice especially its interior, and its new take volvo styling but your wrong about the X6 unless your over 6'4 or 6'5 your head isnt brushing the roof Ive seen a man 6'3 get in the rear and he had plenty of head room....so bit of a stretch

AMC Eagle profile, that´s why is so claustrophobic, but at least you have to give some credit, it will be driving a lot better, buy honestly I do not see it as a popular car.

It's the CLS of SUV's(not SAV BMW) just get used to it, it is just a more stylish less efficient mode of transport based off a good car. for example Person A will drive a E-class and a X5, but wears regular casual clothes. Person B drives a CLS and a X6, but is always in your face about what they own and how they dress.

good way to sum that up......as otherwise the CLS and X6 make no other than those types that value style over other things

"Rupert" If you have troubles fitting in the back of an X6, then you'd have major difficulties in the back of a Lexus GS & Jag XF as the GS has less headroom than the X6, & the XF has equal headroom.

What do you make of the headroom offered in a less practical CLS over the headroom in a more practical E-Class?

It's the same idea here, people whom want a stylish vehicle with more space than say a 5-series, & the 6-series is just a non-practical styling statement for a family man, the X6 is a great compromise.

I tried the XF as well, and my knees were about 5 inches off the top of the seats. There was no foot room at all, and it was tricky to get into. The door is big but awkwardly shaped. I am talking about the back seats though, the fronts were much better.

I saw one today and the car gets you a lot of attention. That's what I like. To stand out, to be different in some way. It's not supposed to be a practical car, but more of a piece of art, so why not like this thing. I agree it's not the most useful, but let's say you want to go on the school run and everyone has the same and it annoys you. This is the perfect way to go!

You have brought up the sales volume thing about 100 times now. How many times do we have to keep correcting you? BMW CHOSE TO ONLY MAKE SO MANY X6'S. THEY'RE SOLD OUT. Sales volume versus a GX or anything else is meaningless when the manufacturer restricts production to keep them exclusive. What part of that don't you get? There's a waiting list at 99% of the dealers across the country for X6's. The two dealers in Cincinnati are taking orders for 2009's already. Keeping supply lower than demand... what an amazing concept!

RX350 is the way to go. screw this 35i crap. Lexus suv's are superior to any German. Toyota knew how to make trucks and they gave that pedigree to Lexus. Who said Lexus are overpriced Toyota's? they are a separate entity.

Yeah I'm sure the RX out performs it in every performance category, and it has much more visual appeal than the X6......... Okay yes the RX is a good reliable vehicle, but thats it. It doesn't stand out, it blends in, and performance wise it's nowhere near close to any of the german rivals or infinity. It is bland by comparison. Not trying to bash it because like I said it is a good reliable car, but it's transverse front wheel drive layout leaves much to be desired in the performance department. They are not even in the same class. Lexus doesn't make anything to compete with the X5/X6, Benz, Audi Q or Infinity FX. That would be like comparing the front wheel drive Lexus ES350 to an Infinity G35 or M35. The Rx is more of an Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, OR lincoln MKX competitor. Europe and Infinity both don't make a soft frontwheel drive based SUV.

Homer I agree toyota makes a damn good and very tough truck. Especially the older tacomas and the old t-100 A friend of mine in high school back in 1996 had an old 1980's one with almost 300,000 miles on it. His parents told him when it broke they'd get him something newer. We tried unsucessfully for that entire school year to kill it and it wouldn't die. That included jumping it. He even rolled it and we flipped it back over. It fired right up with a small puff of smoke. However, the RX isn't a truck, it is based on the camry, just like the highlander.

I really do like Lexus, but their strong point isn't in their SUVs, it's their cars, even though the RX sells really well. It's not that there's anything wrong with them, I just like European SUVs better.

BMW didnt even look at the Infinite FX when they designed the FX. Yes the Infinite has a sleek roofline, but just look at the X6!

This car isn't for people looking for a practical vehicle that can fit 7 people and have enough cargo space for a whole family. It's a 4X4 coupe, and the backseat is only a bonus! It's a styling statement and not a family carrier.

If you haven't noticed already, it focuses on handling and style. It is NOT an Infinite FX competitor. If there's anything that might be compared to it, its the Porsche Cayenne GTS, ML63, Range Rover Sport. Does BMW have to price their car to compete with the Infinite? No.

"Huu76" First of all the X6 clearly didn't copy the FX as they both look totally different; the X6 with it's extremely sloped roofline & the FX's canopy style roofline approach.

Second I'm holding a copy of the latest issue of Motor Trend (July issue) where there is a comparison test conducted between the FX & X6, as well as a second test done between the Jag XF, Benz E-Class, BMW 5-series, & Lex GS.

Let me recite some of its #'s for you:

X6 Headroom F/R - 38.3/37.2
FX Headroom F/R - 39.3/38.5

XF Headroom F/R - 39.0/37.3
GS Headroom F/R - 37.8/37.0

I drive a Jeep SRT-8 & it's awesome, it's faster than any X5 & every other truck that's not an ML63 AMG. Not to mention being as fast as my 650 coupe which is more than 500 hundred pounds lighter. The thing is amazing, great fun.

I forgot to mention it handles great too...

You keep mentioning how the Lexus GS has the biggest interior volume but there's a feelable difference between interior volume and interior space. The Lexus GS is extremely cramped upfront and behind for people above 6'0" in my experience. The GS might have the biggest interior volume, but Lexus did a piss poor job of using it correctly as I feel the most comfortable inside a Mercedes E class and Audi A6. The Lexus GS and BMW 5er are a bit cramped, especially the Lexus GS. Not to mention that as with the IS the Lexus GS has an unusually wide transmission tunnel upfront which takes up valuable leg space.

"Huu76" the height of the vehicle isn't an accurate representation of the vehicles actual headroom as an SUV sits considerably higher than any car. I reported the exact interior headroom dimensions from the Motor Trend.

"S4" to answer your question the Jeep is terrible over bumps, but that's a compromise I'm willing to make for the performance...Even though I'm sure your X5 both handles & soaks up the bumps like a pro.

The SRT8 is damn quick though. I thought it was actually quicker than the ML63 AMG. The only BMW SUVs that will be able to compete are the ones with the 4.4L bi-turbo V8.

Newer design, larger body??? What are you talking about? It has nothing to do with the car's age. The resources for Lexus to make a properly spacious midsized sedan were readily available in 2005!
