Ford's F-Series and large SUVs to get turbodiesel next year
“Diesel and EcoBoost gas turbo direct injection engines are planned for F-150 in 2010 as well.” That’s what Ford stated in their press release when it revealed the 2009 Ford F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show this past January.

Speaking at the “Plug-in Electric Vehicles 2008: What Role for Washington?” Mark Fields, president of FoMoCo Americas said that Ford is working on a clean-diesel version of the F-150 and Ford’s large SUVs.

I don't get why these are popular. Farmers, plumbers, painters, electricians, etc I understand. But this or a car for a normal... I don't get it. Looks bad, drives bad, big cumbersome, costs a ton in petrol/gas, no back seats or boot... WHY?

have you been to any construction areas? any building sites and companies that deliver and tow? they all don't drive or look bad, yes they do use a lot of gas, but they have their uses.

The 4.4 Turbo Diesel F-150 is one of the most exciting vehicles coming from Ford IMO.

Ford should have made this leap years ago. They have great Trucks, but their old powertrains are killing them.

Ford needs to bring this small Diesel to market immediately. 6,7 or 8-speed transmissions would help as well, maybe a 2 speed rear end, low for city, high for highway.

Diesel makes more sense for towing and plowing. You can’t plow with an electric motor.

GM ruined the idea of Diesel when they built the junk Diesel for Oldsmobile cars back in the 80s.

After GM lost this market, suddenly it became illegal to own a Diesel car in states like New York. The big corporations get to lobby and have laws written on thier behalf. Regular people just have to live with it.

People who live in the suburbs need pickup truck, especially people who are do-it yourselfers, people save money this way. A pick-up is a very handy vehicle to have if you need to get lumber, paneling, furniture, carpeting etc.

Diesel fuel will not remain $.65 - $.85 more per gallon indefinitely. Remember last spring, diesel fuel was $.30 less than regular unleaded. Market forces will bring the two fuels closer together before long as refiners can't stand to lose lost profit by selling low-priced gasoline versus high-priced diesel fuel. As such, they will find ways to produce more diesel fuel and less gasoline, balancing out supply and demand.

GM is also coming out with a diesel for the 1/2-ton Chevy Silverado, 1/2-ton GMC Sierra and 1/2-ton H2 Hummer (if the Hummer survives) by 2010.

It will be a 4.5-liter V-8 Duramax, developed by D-Max division (same group that builds the 6.6-liter V-8 for the 3/4 and 1-ton varieties). The engine will be built in N.Y.

The Dodge Ram will get either (or both) a 4.2 V-6 and/or a 5.6 V-8 built by Cummins in Ohio.

Toyota Tundra may get a Hino diesel. Nissan is developing their own for the Titan.

This is all old news, but Ford is very secretive and is just now making official announcements long after experts have already told us what they would bring us.
