240HP diesel Porsche Cayenne coming March next year

Porsche has stated in the past it would not fit any diesel powerplants to its cars but with toughening fuel economy and emissions regulations looming in both the U.S. and Europe the sports carmaker may not have a choice.

Industry experts are predicting Porsche will use an upgraded Audi V6 turbodiesel in its Cayenne SUV, and new reports claim the oil-burning Porsche will be on sale by March next year.

The new engine will develop a peak output of 240hp (179kW) and Porsche is expected to produce up to 15,000 diesel Cayennes annually.

No way huu76, Porsche is simply offering its customers more choice. The only complaint I have is that the Cayenne's front seats are not wide enough -- they must be sharing seats with a lesser VW vehicle or simply smoking the wrong stuff.

OK, 240hp diesel is great. But how much torque is spinning the wheels? Considering many diesels capable of 240hp may achieve 325-350lb-ft of torque (at low RPM levels) then this Porsche oil-burner may be a big hit (as in popularity)...not much of a hit to the wallet.

The Mercedes E320 Bluetec gets 400lb ft of torque (200hp). This should be even better.

The latest 3.0 TDI from Audi has 370 lb-ft @ 1500rpm against the 400lb-ft @ 1600rpm from the E320. The reason the Audi engine produces more power is because it revs higher.

Diesel power will be big in the premium market, huge torque, great power in the 3 and 4 litre bracket and much better mpg figures.

Figures for Audi 3.0 Turbo Diesel from Audi UK. 240hp SAE and over 330 lbs ft of torque at 1400+ rpm......

These diesels are turning out HP figures that just a blink of an eye ago would have been impressive for a gas engine, I think BMW has a 280hp 3 litre diesel, but no gas engine has this kind of torque.

Its the only way to meet gov't mileage regulations and offer performance at the same time (using today's technology).

Notice that Porsche didn't try to bump mileage and performance with a gas-hybrid option ...

I don't know if the info that i read is correct but in 2 European magazines i read that the engine is based in the 3.0L 240Hp that Audi uses but tunned to develop around 320HP ( in a future itineration between 280-300 on Audi)!! If this is correct plus the high values of torque it shouldn't be that slow!!!
