Nutshell: Ideal Ford Regrouping

Ford should be trucks and trucks Only, 1 or 2 SUVs maximum. Big one, a small one, limited production to meet smaller niche demand.

Mercury should be cars only, since they have a more elegant upscale design over the economy looking Fords. Ford needs to redesign an affordable Mercury Flagship Diesel Sedan similar to the Interceptor, with a 7 speed manual or automatic. Get the Flagship into the 30MPG range with Diesel and better gearing. If the Germans can make efficient engines and sporty large sedans, so can Ford if they bother to try.

The larger Mustang is what brought it success. Made it more of a Touring car as opposed to a Kid’s racer. Making it smaller will kill the car. A 4-Door Mustang might be a better idea. How about a 4-Door Cougar with an elegant woodgrain dash. Lexus and Audi have had great success with wood interiors.

Lincoln needs a sporty Luxury Flagship like the Lexus LS460 without chasing Lexus as in the MKS. The MKS is to watered down for Flagship status. It is more of a replacement for Continental. (mid range luxury)

The MKT should be a big hit, although front wheel drive is not for Luxury brands, All-wheel drive is not a popular direction based on tighter CAFÉ standards.

Lincoln needs a sport model, and more crossovers.

Lincoln should have never gone down the SUV road.
Ford needs to update the engines in its truck line to Diesel or Ecoboost. Maybe build a half truck half car with a mini pickup bed for a sedan truck. Bentley’s new car has a drop down tailgate.
Bentley has the best looking large sedan. Ford just didn’t keep up their momentum on affordable large sedans.

Mercury needs Sport-Luxury Wagons like Volvo’s XC60. Sport Wagons will likely be the next big trend after crossovers. (I say Mercury as a Car Only division, Ford as a Truck Only division) lincoln owners will not drive wagons, so Mercury is a better fit. How about just replace Mercury with Volvo?


It seems all the segments that Ford wants to kill have had huge success under other companies. BMW=Sport Sedan, Bentley=Luxury sedan, Volvo=SportLuxury Wagon, Mercedes=Efficient Luxury SUV, Volkswagon&Mercedes=Diesel Success, Lexus=7 Speed efficient Flagship sedan, Chrysler & Honda=Minivan Success.

Chrysler's Sprinter Diesel Van is a big Sucess for the Large Van segment. Ford has the Transit connect for small applications, but nothing to rival the Sprinter for comercial fleet companies or contractors that need covered cargo areas, or large people movers. Dodge Sprinter grabbed this market.

Fords answer is to drop lines and not compete. I don’t see Audi dropping the A8L. The car has an obvious need in the business segment.

Ford has too many marketing people, not enough engineers.

Who cares about Ford. The only good cars they ever made were the Mondeo & GT

Mercury and Lincoln should go away...
