Infiniti Throws Its Hat In The Ring With Baby G37 Coupe Geared To Thwart BMW 1-Series

Infiniti Throws Its Hat In The Ring With Baby G37 Coupe Geared To Thwart BMW 1-Series
At the Infiniti 360 event recently in Portugal, a rendering was shown at one of the press presentations hinting  they would launch a baby G37 coupe that would compete with the 1-Series BMW.

The rendering looks hot in our opinion and should become a worthy  competitor when it launches as a 2010 model.

They didn't say it was coming for sure but WE'RE telling you if they showed it, you KNOW it's coming...

What do the Auto Spies faithful say?

STUD or DUD?

Think Infiniti will use the same ploy BMW used, by saying this baby coupe 'Harkens' back to the original 'Z' Car, like the 1-Series to the 2002?

Give me a break..... Not all smaller cars are to compete w/ 1 series. Miata, Z, TT have all been there way before 1 series.

This is a true sports car, not a 2 door version of sport sedan. The main rivals will be Z4 and Cayman!!!

take the grill off and you have a Tiburon. Regardless I don't know how much smaller than the G coupe Infiniti can make this car, the back seats are already useless in the G (at least you can fit people in back of the 1-Series). I guess they could undercut the 1-Series price and make this a two seater, but only having two seats would give the 1-Series a huge advantage, even if the extra two seats in the G37 are useless. That would make this more of an inexpensive Z4 Coupe/Cayman competitor.

First, if Infiniti is going to actually build this smaller version of the unsuccessful G37, it will never look like this rendering.
Second, the G37 coupe is already more cramped than the 1 series BMW so I cannot imagine how anybody who weighs over 90 pounds will be able to get inside this baby freak car.
Third, we know that the G37 is such a turd of a car, poorly built and unrefined and I just cannot imagine how a cheaper version of "that" will look and perform. I mean how low can you go?
Like other wise people said this is more of a Hyundai competitor than a BMW competitor. Nice rendering though, thanks to Hyundai designer team.

Etoile_suce, the G37 IS successful, and it IS well built. But it IS more cramped than a 1-Series. There's no debate there, the rear seat is smaller in every dimension and there's no headroom. It's a very good looking car with that sloped back, but that's the tradeoff you get for the style versus the more boxy 1-Series.

In the entry level premium category Infiniti placed first and second with the EX and G series. I didn't see the BMW near the top of that list. The G coupe sold over 2200 units in May, hardly "unsucessful". When you grow up and get a drivers licence go drive a G.

wow 7 cars off the same platform........in order to compete with the 135i this "version 7" of the Z car would have to out power the G37 as the 335i is faster than the G37 despite less power and the 135i is faster than the 335i. Judging by Infiniti's past attempts at fighting BMW it will offer performance that is close, none of the refinement, and will share alot with its Nissan counterparts.....so the world gets another "sports car" in the luxury performance class....I guess focusing on what they can do was the objective lol

Love it. WHo wants a G37 when you can have this. The car market has been seriously flawed in the fact that prices have escalated tremendously and cars that were in a certain range have leaped out of that range leaving space for cheaper models like the 1 series as the perfect example.

We need smaller cars and lower prices without sacrificing quality and craftsmanship.

teknik - have you driven the G37 and a 135 coupe? There is a huge difference into the mannerisms of each car. The G37 is a luxury car with some sport characteristics. It is pretty quick unless you get the car on a track where the body roll is evident and the lack of low end torque kills the power of the car entering and exiting turns. The 135 on the other havd is light and tremendous amount of power. It blows the doors off the G37 in regards to power, performance, handling, braking. Also, the G37 is smaller inside than the 135 coupe. This new concept by Infiniti, is just that a concept. The drawing doesnt reflect what you will actually be buying. Third, the car will not compete with the 135, since the G37 already does. It will compete with a Z4 coupe.

As a G37 owner I can vouch that the Infiniti is an excellence vehicle. However, I do not hate on the BMW 335 coupe cuz its an amazing car as well. I just chose it over the 335 because I liked driving the Infiniti more, and I couldn't justify spending the extra $7k for the bimmer.

Now with that said, I don't bash the 1 or 3 series because I own the competitor. This new baby G was developed because of the 1 series, but at the same time BMW had to up the anty on the 3 coupe because of the original G35 coupe. The 330ci had 230hp until the G came in and blew it out with 280, then 293. You can't deny that.

Just be happy these two companies are going neck to neck and making great cars because of it. This market has never been so good.
