What was your favorite car when you were young?

I have been very fortunate to have had quite a few really great cars, especially in the last few years.

My first car though in much humbler days was a 1974 Mustang Coupe.

But my favorite, as a young gun at the University of Colorado, was my 1979 Jeep CJ-7 Renegade.

It was black with orange gradient 'Renegade' striping, white wheels, all terrain tires and a wicked AM radio!

I had the back seat removed, laid some thick orange shag carpet on the floor (for cushioning) and had my bud Dan Delaney (Dan now paints indy cars)paint the side inside wheel well with 'The Flamingo Lounge' (For the ladies I entertained back there).

Oh baby!

I thought I was killin em back then!

What was your favorite and why?

'72 Datsun 240Z. I loved the crisp 4-speed and smooth in-line six. But mainly I couldn't get enough of the rawness of that car. There's a very tight connection between the driver and the road in this car...

The Triumph was a hoot. Great fun. Cut down doors meant you could touch the ground from the driver's seat if that was your thing.

The Corvair was turbocharged and it was amazing when the vacuum pressure gauge went positive and the horsepower went from 80 to 150 (two seconds after you stepped on the gas.) I put on the John Fitch Sprint suspension, steering arms and short shifter and better tires and it handled and drove like a little Porsche. (The Corvair had a notorious suspension but it could be fixed and Fitch knew how.) The turbo was cool but the delay was a bit weird -- and dangerous -- and the engine used a vastly overstressed belt that did not last long (and was not always easy to get.)

I was always in love with Ferraris, and the F40 was the first car which just blew me away (I'm 24 now)...the 201 mph thing was certainly part of it.

I think the 512 TR (1991-92 I think?) was then my favorite from a purely aesthetic perspective. Still looks modern today.

My favorite car when I was young (10 yrs.old)was the Porsche 928. The neighbor up the street had a black one and I used to run up the street just to see if he left his garage open! I was so exotic and swoopy looking I just wagged my tongue every time it came up the street.
Later, however, I developed a distinct fondness for the Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon. It was cheaper than the Porsche, my father already owned one, and there was plenty of room in the back seat bench for heavy petting. A true classic!
