Super Car Showdown - The Quest to Find the Most Fuel Efficient Supercar - And the Results Will Surprise You!
Whether you love him or hate him, the one thing that I think we all can agree on is the fact that Jeremy Clarkson is at least amusing.  Of course amusing can go either way, some see a person who is amusing and assume that person to be a moron while another can see the same person and see a genius.  I fall into the second camp on this one and happen to think that if not pure genius, certainly borderline genius status can be given to Jeremy Clarkson.

He is first and foremost entertaining but it is also obvious he knows his cars as well as being a halfway decent driver.  Which is what makes the premise of this segment so amusing.  Earlier in the week AutoSpies.com brought you the Prius vs. BMW M3 video done by Top Gear.  As amusing as the video was, in the end it was really pointless which enhanced the entertainment value.  It really doesn't matter if you loved that video or hated it, the appeal of a Toyota Prius racing a BMW M3 got you to click the link and watch the video.

What we didn't show you was the entire first segment of the video that sought to find out what super car was the most fuel efficient.  Anytime cars like the Lamborghini Murcielago, Mercedes McLaren SLR, Ferrari 599 GTB, Aston DBS and Audi R8, people sit up and take notice.  In this case, these cars were assembled on the track and given 1 gallon of gas to find out which car would go the furthest.

You'll have to watch the video to find out the winner, what is surprising is seeing which car finished second in this video.

I know there will be those who disagree with the results, so I ask the following, how could the test been carried out differently to find the most efficient Super Car?

I just wanted to say, I am enjoying articles submitted by Agent00J. It's a welcomed respite from the articles we usually get from 009. For the most part he seems objective. Keep it up 00J!

I fall into the camp that likes Clarkson and on a side note, I totally agree with Clarkson, Most American cars are rubbish lol.

those are the rewards u reap from spending capital on marketing and not engineering for the last 30 years. It only takes the down fall of the entire industry for the big three to finally get there act together

Silver1,

You do realize the Lexus LF-A isn't for sale, don't you? It is hard to include a car not for sale in a comparison that uses cars that are for sale.

not sure how the results were a surprise the car with the smallest engine, and least amount of horsepower won the test......but interesting watch though

The point I was getting at regarded the second to last car to run out of gas, the Lamborghini with the big V12 engine. Prior to watching the outcome, I assumed that it would be one of the first to consume all of the fuel.

I agree with you BMWDRVR. The Ferrari was a given, have you looked at their MPG window stickers? 9mpg City (and thats whats claimed meaning real life will be much less and providing you dont drive it hard.)

I'm with you 00J, with that V12 and awd, I thought it would be first. I'm also surprised how fast they all ran out of petrol, even though they were pushed as hard as they were.

I think what this further proves is that the Audi R8 isn't a Supercar. You could drive the R8 every day, therefore, not a Supercar! :)

Once the Lexus LF-A hybrid comes out, it won't even be considered as a supercar, because we all know that LF-A will be more like a sporty Corolla, so think what an LF-A hybrid would do?

This clip is great. Not as hilarious as the M3-Prius race, but great fun!

It also shows that the Audi R8 is the most practical supercar out there. However, at 5.1 mpg (Imp.) I don't think the R8 will win many kudos from the Sierra Club!

I wonder how the Nissan GT-R, Corvette Z06 and God-knows-what iteration of the Porsche 911 would do in such a race.

I actually think the Z06 may top the R8 in mpg. It certainly does in highway mpg (25 mpg IIRC).

the vette gets such good highway mileage because of the tall 5th gear and super tall 6th gear, it would probably never go past 4th gear on any track. ope the throttle up and that mileage advantage is nothing but a faint memory.

Top Gear (UK) has good entertainment value but little else. Clarkson is an arrogant and biased hypocrite, but that suits him as an auto reviewer. I find it ironic how he hates all "Yank cars", yet he bought himself a Ford GT supercar. At least we get a good taste of what else is available in ROW that we don't have in NA.
