Bucking the Trend: Audi Sales Increase 5.3% For June

Audi of America, Inc. announced today auto sales for the month of June totaling 8,203, an increase of 5.3% from last year’s figures; the brand also experienced a 1.8 percent increase in market share for the month within the luxury segment to reach 7.8%. Audi was the only luxury brand to record a year over year increase in sales.  Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales also continued their record-setting trend; compared with last year’s June figures, CPO sales rose to 2,787 units, an increase of 23.6%.

“Audi of America’s strong June sales demonstrate our quality and strong fuel economy offerings,” said Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president, Audi of America. “Consumers looking for style, power and efficiency are continuing to respond positively to Audi’s progressive brand of luxury.”

Nationwide, Audi sales of the A4 jumped 34.3%, demonstrating excitement around the brand, which has seen consistent movement throughout 2008: Audi has reported strong car (sedan and sports car) sales throughout the year, citing high dealer traffic amid rising levels of brand awareness and consideration. In June, Audi posted the greatest ranking improvement in initial quality in the results from J.D. Power and Associates’ 2008 industry-wide study.

To date, Audi has sold 45,023 vehicles in 2008, a 1.5% decrease over the previous year; CPO sales for 2008 total 18,241, an increase of 41.7% over 2007.

The A4 is selling because it's offering the market a nice blend of luxury, performance, and fuel efficiency. Isnt' BMW the one with great lease deals and give-aways?

.....EVERY luxury car manufacturer has LEASE deals.......and yes Audi is no different, please step into reality...they have lease deals as much and often as anyone else and they are just as low....just becuase BMW sells nearly as many as 3 series as Audi sells cars in the US doesnt mean they are the only ones doing lease deals.....and judging by the fact everything but the A4 that wasnt a new model was a decline I suspect more lease deals on top of the already WELL ADVERTISED lease deals for the A4 are on the way.......

Hell, given a choice between a FWD Audi and a loaded Camry tin-can, I'd take the Audi any day!
And the loaded Camry does cost more and offers a lot less.
But the reality is that sales of FWD Audis are very small ... you'd be hard-pressed to find one on an Audi dealer's lot.

Audi has had some lease deals on the A4 on and off this year. This sales jump is probably influenced by the current market conditions.

You can see the Audi market share going up a very good amount as the overall luxury market shrinks, but Audi expands.

Easy for Audi to post an increase when it takes them six months to sell the same amount of cars that Mercedes or BMW sell in one month.

That makes absolutely no sense, an increase is an increase. Either they're taking customers from the other luxury markets or they are attractive to new luxury customers.

I really hope Audi learns from their recent success with the outgoing A4. Lease deals make a huge difference !! Probably one of the main reasons I'm a 3-series loyalist is because they always seem to offer such great lease deals.

I've had several friends hop into a Special Edition A4 2.0T purely based on Audi's aggressive campaign to lure buyers into the showroom because of the television commercial touting the $399 a month lease. It's now been proved that this worked for them in a big way. Who would of ever thought that the last year of a model would suddenly be flooding the roads?

If only now they could do the same with the A5, A6, TT and upcoming A4, then I would bet this sales increase would continue.

here is where difference comes between Audi and other brands. Audi hasn't spent money (in discount leases) in a huge amount like others have.

Audi might do that if they want to meet their sales goals, or they might not if they want to work on the profit margin.

Chip- in a perfect world we would see more aggressive deals but if you are selling out in england, Germany, china and making much more money don't expect Audi of germany to give us the marketing support (ie lease give aways) all the time.

BMW is a great car but the #1 #2 and #3 markets for BMW is the USA. BMW can and must support their sales here to a greater degree then Audi can and will.

I wish Audi supported the A8, A6, S5, A5, RS4, S4 with cheep lease deals. They did only 2 years ago.

For years I would hear "I could buy a BMW or MB for that much" when customers would come to us as the cheeper car. I have not heard a comment like that for a long time.

I guess all is well for now BUT WE ARE OUT OF CARS DAMN IT! (that was so Audi germany could hear)

Both your comments make a lot of sense, but I am under the impression that Audi is trying desperately to improve their standing in the US market. I am well aware that their worldwide sales are impressive, but isn't the US just as important?

Like you mentioned, BMW relies heavily on the US, and since Audi makes some fantastic cars, you would think they would try to capitalize on that same level of success here. I don't think they need to offer great lease deals on their niche vehicles, like the S4, S5, S6, RS4, S8 or even the TT for that matter, but getting more people into the A4, A5, A6, A8 & Q7 would likely make a huge statement about how far Audi has come in the past decade. Plus the more people see, the more they like, the more they buy.

As for you guys being out of cars, I don't doubt you. I've tried to find an S5 to test drive since it hit our shores, and every one of them coming in is pre-sold and gone the day after it gets here. The only A5 my dealership had that wasn't sold, was gone in a day. They also seem to be going for higher than MSRP and the lease deals supposedly are ridiculous. And to be honest, I've only seen a couple out on the roads. That's disappointing, because it's a beautiful car.

Perhaps this keeps Audi more unique and rare, but in my opinion, they'd be better off getting all their cars out on the roads and selling as many as they can to improve their image.

Chip: Why would Audi care much about US sales when they sell for the lowest price here compared to anywhere else, and they have huge demand in the growing markets of the world?
They are building factories in India ... not because sales are big there now, but they are looking at 10 - 20 years down the road when it could be a repeat of China where VW/Audi owned the car market and Audi is still the most revered brand.

well given that they only sold a little over 200.....and in Europe there is no problem with a shortage of A5's....seeing as their are several models from Fwd-awd....one would think this shortage of A5/S5 cars is staged........seeing as that little over 200 is between 2 models certainly Audi had more available than that

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 7/2/2008 11:40:43 AM

that's partly because BMW didn't only bring 200 M3's, 1-Series, and X6's over here to sell. The A5/S5 is a very nice car, but even a POS would be sold out if you only had 200 of them to sell nationally.

Is the A5/S5 sold out? Yes. Would it still be exclusive and sold out if they doubled or even tripled the inventories? Probably. And yet they don't, instead choosing to only sell 200 in the whole country when they could easily bring more and still have a sold out vehicle. Why would a manufacturer do this? For the same reason it's stupid for us to all be arguing over who is selling the best in the U.S.

Because of how weak the dollar has become versus other currency, right now car manufacturers are taking a bath on cars built outside the U.S. when they export them to the U.S. That affects Audi (minimally, since they're not a big player here), BMW, Mercedes, Lexus (immensely, since they don't sell well anywhere else), etc. To minimize this, car manufacturers have scaled back the number of vehicles they're giving dealers here. That's why the A5 has a "6 months deli ticket", as you said. EvilHomer also knows that's why his dealership is already out of A4's. It's also why most BMW dealers have almost no 1-Series models in stock. Rather than losing money selling the cars here, they're selling those cars elswhere where they bring much more money.

Look at the global sales figures. Even with the sales slumps in the U.S. (and yes, even Audi is down year to date 1.5% versus last year) Audi, Mercedes, BMW, etc. are all enjoying HIGHER sales worldwide than ever. Sales may be down here, but every car they're NOT selling in the U.S. they ARE selling somewhere else where it brings twice the profit it does here.

That's the end of our economics lesson for today. Now everyone can go back to our idiotic arguing over which manufacturer is selling the best here when in reality all of them are actively rerouting cars to the rest of the world so they DON'T have to sell them here.

lesson??? are you kidding the A5/S5 are of the run of the mill coupes again their low numbers between 2 models shows Audis sold out status is staged between 2 models you sell only around 200 cars on initial launch and it has nothing to do with the lack of wanting to sell here due to the exchange rate or other factors.....if Audi had as many A5/S5s as its competition int the states it still wouldnt outsell them.....because this shortage has nothing to do with production but choosing how many to bring over...the A5 isnt sold out in Europe in the 5 or models of it that they sell so a car that is simply an entry level coupe you bring 200 over and by the way they arent sold out everywhere just in some areas....by the way....and that wasnt an intentional shortage lol get out here with that rediculous argument...it was staged...there are plenty dealerships where you can buy A5/S5 only some markets have shortages lol 200 whats that a 2 or 3 day sale of 3 series

Audi was selling about 400 A5/S5 that last few month. And that was without an auto S5 and not a huge selection. If they sold 200ish this month, that's probably because the supply went down even more.

Like JrobUSC said, European manufacturers (especially Audi) can easily sell the cars in other places. Audi would rather sell more A5/S5s in other countries where they sell for a lot more money.

Audi sells A5s in Germany for 18,000 dollars more than it does in the USA. They are probably bringing over the ordered models, but they aren ok with selling less A5s in the US.

BMWdrivr, it IS an intentional shortage for the U.S. market, and all the luxury brands are doing it (at least the ones that can). You and I are both BMW fans -- why do you think 128i coupes are so hard to find? It's a good car but is it THAT great? It's because of exchange rates. The manufacturer literally is making nothing on each one of those they bring here. Nothing. So they're bringing less over than they originally planned on. That information came from BMW NA corporate, by the way. The same thing is going on with Audi and the A5/S5. Sure, it's sold out, but at numbers FAR below where they could be. Again, that's a choice. It doesn't matter if the A5/S5 isn't sold out everywhere else in the world, when you're selling them for what equates to twice as much they just need to be selling period.

bulldogz, there may be some dealers who have more than others -- Herb Chambers BMW right by you is one of the largest BMW dealers in the country. I don't doubt they have X6's, 1's, and M3's. It's not really possible to compare that to the A5/S5 because BMW did in fact bring 3-6x more of each of those models over than Audi did A5/S5's. Even still, the majority of dealers in the U.S. however have little to no inventory of 128i Coupes or X6's. Part of that is the cars are new and popular. Part of it is BMW is bringing over fewer than they planned on because of the exchange rate, just enough to keep them sold out.

I think Audi knows it just cannot get the volume up anywhere close to BMW and Mercedes, and it's foolish to try. They've been focused on profits for a while now. That's the reason you don't see great lease deals on anything other than the A4 (last year of the current model) and Q7 (tough market) now. On the one hand, it makes owning an Audi much more exclusive than owning one of its competitors' cars.

But the other part of the equation is, in my experience of owning 3 Audis in the last 10 years and having recently shopped for another one, the service is still sub-par and the sales experience I recently had was sub-par. The other unfortunate trend I've noticed was that the interior quality of the current "lower" end models (NEW A4, which I've been in - NY Audi showroom has one, Q7 and A6) has taken a step down from the models of the past 10 years. However, it's no worse than the X5 I just got, which is shockingly bad for a $55,000 car. Maybe this is what you get in mid-range luxury cars now?

Given that a very impressive brand-new A4 will come out in 2009, I too am surprised by the vigorous sales for the 2008 A4.

It could be that, given current fuel prices, even entry-level luxury-car buyers are looking for vehicles with good mileage. A 4-cylinder A4 with a stick-shift gets 20/31 city/highway EPA ratings. A 6-cylinder A4 quattro with automatic still gets 17/25.

Or it could be that people who are looking for a medium-sized car but want something a bit more posh than a Ford Fusion or a Toyota Camry are buying A4s. The good lease and year-end sales promotions don't hurt either.

What do mean by cheaper? You fail to see the reality of it. All luxury makes have to compete with one another. Therefore, leases, finance charges, promotions, etc will on par with one another to compete. So, BMW like othes has to stay competitive. If there prices were so much higher than their competitors, they would price themselves out of the market. I think you need some education yourself on market dynamics. Actually, Audi is not subverting their leases as BMW has in the past. Hence, not $400 million disaster and loss of residual value as your precious Bimmer.
