Not bad, but maybe a little bland? I like the view from the rear/side of the car rather than the front/side, the front looks a little too much like the 5 series. Side view looks like Lexus LS (which is ironic since Lexus LS is a plagiarized BMW).

I'm not exactly wowed by the interior either. Seems like a more conservative treatment of the current interior.

You may have a point. The CS production version (whatever it will be called) is the halo car and I am sure will look the part. It will be the styled vehicle while the 7 goes back to being an executive, understated luxo barge to carry people around in, with little conspicuousness.

That makes no sense. Why would BMW spend $1b to develop a car that they deliberately want to be undesirable so that their next (flagship) car looks even better. It does make sense that they are aiming at different markets with the two different cars, but they would still want both cars to be very desirable and best in class. I am a BMW fan, but think this does look like the LS and not as good looking as the S Class.

This is what happens when you mix Lexus LS and 7-Series together.....a 1900 cadillac Deville

The tail pipes looks great even though that was also stolen from the Lexus LS. Taillights/lightbulbs looks great, they light up similar to the LS also....

Did they take buy an LS and base the engineering off the LS into this car?

uh, pal, that "poking out upper lip" on the rear decklid you mention -- check out a 6-Series. Came out in 2003. Been on every one of them. That same decklid feature, just less pronounced, has been on every new BMW model since the previous 7-Series came out in 2001. Even the X3, X5, and X6 either have it or have hints of it.

Seems the other way around. Toyota has always been copying others when they design their Lexus cars. The ones that are original look awkward. Just my opinion though. BMW copying off of Lexus?

I don't find it bad. I think they have fixed some things that certainly needed it- notably the rear end and the leather dash. I like it better than the previous mid-life refresh, which I in turn liked better than the original.

The grille makes the car look smaller, which depending on your point of view could be a good or a bad thing.

It is a little bland, but I think that the proportions of the car are more to blame at this point. Sure the old one had similar proportions, and wasn't bland, but it had other problems.

Unbelievable! As much of a BMW fanboy I have been, this is a let down. It's not that the car is hideous or all that bad, but its not even a BMW anymore in terms of appearance. It just looks weird and confused. I really can't see this car competing with others in its class for the next 7 years (in looks). The A8 is still beautiful and the new one is still on the way, i think, don't know too much about Audi's and their time cycles, the S Class my favorite in this segment (looks only), no comment on or for the extra large Camry, but this new 7 doesn't do it for me. I'll have to see it in person to believe it. This can't be real, it can't be. Lexus fan boys, please let us have it. I'm sure it drives beautifully though.

But I do agree with you on one thing like I stated before in the other article, it's not the BMW that you would expect, it's too Japanese. We have enough Lexus's LS and Acrua's RL out on the road, we want something different so thats why we choose the BMW 7-series. Now the 7-series are with the Japanos, what are we going to choose now??? S-Class?

I have to agree with you again, seems like the S-Class is all we got for right now until the new A8 comes along...

Ugh... disappointed again by BMW. The front end is nice (except for the pig nose oversized kidney grills); side is very nice, like a modern 5 series, but the back is to close to the Hyundai Genesis (and the interior looks like an Infiniti). Not that Infinitis and the new Genesis are bad cars, but the 7 series i suppose to be an innovator, avant-garde if you will... this sadly is not!

I don't really care for Lexus much, but for once I agree with the Lexus crowd that this thing looks like the LS, straight up. Interior looks nice, but I'm not a fan of the exterior...S-Class beats the pants off this thing.

And 001, I don't really understand the logic about making this car purposely bland in order to make the CS (or 8 series, or whatever) look better when it comes out. Why would BMW purposely "dullify" this car to make another one stand out? Why not try to make both cars stand out? The two cars won't even be competing in the same segment...

I don't think the point was to make it bland, I think it was to make it less polarizing. It'll still have the driving dynamics, it just fits in with its peers more in terms of looks (aka they're not going to put off clients who wanted something more understated and elegant looking the way the previous one did). For people who WANT that over the top aggressive style, the 8-Series will fill that niche. It's not like BMW doesn't have soom room pricewise to slot the 8-Series in, the S-class already costs more than a 7-Series.

I want to see some more pics. The exterior lines aprear to be clean and elegant. While the interior appears to be a nice evolution, and looks very high in quality. After reading the press release this car is loaded with new technologies, and old ones that have been fine tuned. It also embodies all things that make a BMW a BMW and will no doubt have class leading dynamics and performance.

I've always been a fan of the 7-series, but this is really dissapointing. Since the new LS came out, I was anticipating something exciting, new, sexy, from BMW and this is what they end up with?!?! A vehicle that looks like a bunch of other vehicles lumped together? Infiniti hood and LS looks, and the same uninspiring interior? They might have gone conservative to save for the CS concept, but they didn't need to hand everything over to Lexus and Mercedes! If you put the LS and this side-by-side, this 7 series already looks old! Too bad.

silver1, I'm going to play devil's advocate here. The new X6 with that engine has been clocked 0-60 in 4.8-5.0 seconds and it weighs 1000lbs more, so this is likely a 4.5-4.8 second car. It's also likely the best handling car in the segment, especially with the rear wheel steering. So just out of curiosity, if this is a "grandma" car, what does that make the rest of the cars in the class, especially the LS?

all of which cost anywhere from "a lot more" to "twice as much" more. Yeah, those are direct competitors. And I actually doubt the S63 will murder this at all. Again, if a 1000lb heavier X6 with this engine can hit 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, how quick is this thing going to be? Besides, there's going to be a more powerful version of it coming too.

And FYI, some people do care about the performance, or everyone would just buy LS's.

technik, the LS is the best seller because it's the least expensive and the newest. Period. Every time "the cool new thing" comes out in this class, it leads the segment in sales for awhile until the NEXT "cool new thing" comes out. The previous 7-Series did it, then the redesigned S-class, now the LS. It'll happen again when this new 7-Series comes out, and again when the next redesign comes along by MB, and again with the new LS. That's just how it works.

This is a picture of the current 7 series before they came out with the production model....thats what this is...

bad design even for a normal/regular sedan and seeing it comes from BMW makes it worse.

This new 7 looks very bland and ugly, infact i'll place the current 7 series design over this all new one. Not impressed. Why BMW didn't put more CS deign cues other than that big grille. That was such a beutiful design. They should have gone Jaguar route (Concept XF-----> Production XF. very similar).

and btw rear end could also compete for the ugliest rear ever award.
Sorry i find even the gensesis more decent than this totally ugly thing.

Design wise S class, LS and A8 are still far ahead.

Even though the web (inc Autospies) was full of reports indicating the new 7 will launch with 8-speed gearbox, the press release mentions only a 6-speed...
Also I remember when the last 7 was unveiled in 2001, it was one of the first cars to feature Logic7 audio. In other words it was pioneering but what about this? Audi has got B&O and its awesome.
It looks like as it has been the case with BMW for couple of years now, they are after market share and not really interested in giving us something to dream about...

actually, just realized what it is -- it's the driver side rear door. So it's possible the window controls up front are in the console, but based on the console photo I don't think they are.

and considering the photo of the front seat interior shows a window switch on the passenger door armrest, I'm pretty sure the window switches are still on the doors and not on the console.

I don't really care about the window switches, my biggest gripe with the car is I wish BMW would have put the seat controls on the doors as well, a la MB. Those 20-way comfort seats on the 7-Series were already confusing to most folks, and that was when you could physically SEE them. Now they're saying they mounted the controls on the seat (presumably on the side like all their other cars) -- I have no idea how someone is going to figure out those 20-way seat adjusters having to do so by "feel" with their hand between the door and the side of the seat.

Everybody said in 2000 when the new 7 Series came out it was ugly, but then, after a while, people began to say "well, it isn't that bad, in fact, it's good."

I think it will be a great car.

On to the design, the 7 Series, S-Class, A8 and LS segment isn't for people who want an amazing design and want to stand out. Its for people who sit in an office all day doing nothing and want to have a nice car. Not some thing that distracts people so badly on the road they lose concentration and plough over the side of a cliff.

The fact that you have to tell people to "Read the Full Press Release" before passing judgement on the Vehicle shows that you know that you are aware the vast majority of Auto Enthusiasts do not like the Design of this New 7.

Being A BMW one should be Riveted by the Design and it should be a given that the Vehicle will be featuring a whole Pletora of New Technology.

Actually I'm curious to know what 001 thinks of the overall design...IMO anyone who likes this design is a BMW badge whore because even myself as a die-hard BMW fan, just can't see past that grill & those taillights!

Honestly the design of the new 7-series frightens me as history has shown the 7, in a sense, is the model that marks the next-gen styling direction for BMW.

I'm now fearing the worse for the next-gen 5-series & even more so the 6-series.

If you actually look at the rear end from behind, it doesn't look bad at all. It looks very good actually. Front looks very understated. Isn't this what everyone wanted?

The problem here is that everyone had extremely high expectations for the new car. So the result is many people are not satisfied.

I absolutely love it. 001 is totally correct - they designed it to satisfy the needs of the customers squarely in the middle of their bell curve - call them boring, call them conservative, but they're the ones who ante up $US90,000 or E70,000 for a huge, slightly sporty German engineered luxury sedan.

They might have been a little alienated by the old 750i but this one will bring them home.

The edgier customers can either move up to the CS/8-series (which will be sold in low volumes anyway), buy themselves an M-1, or cop-out and buy a Quattroporte.

For you naysayers, please study some of the design elements, BMW has done a beautiful job on this one. Its an excellent, subtle design.

One of the main problems with previous gen 7 was the 'disconnected" throttle pedal feel, it was like talking to the engine through a translator. Valvetronic may be to blame so lets see how will this new engine feel like.
To those LS lovers, I drive a 2008 LS460L as part of company car and I tell you its absolutely pathetic when you ask it to dance. The engine, though powerful enough in theory, is very hesitant above 3000 rpm and body rolls alot... from a driver's point of view, it doesnt hold a candle to its German rivals.

I too was disappointed by the styling (both inside and out) of the new 7-series. However, from a technical standpoint it sounds very impressive indeed.

Well now that the design is starting to sink in a bit I'm starting to like more things about it; especially the cars overall profile.

The things I will never like about this car is the grill & whole rear-end, mostly in part due to the taillights. I still can't believe BMW would approve such a design, how can they find this to be less controversial than the rear-end of the 745i?

Every time I look at the back I expect to see an L (for Lexus of course), not a propeller. These Asian styling cues are the reason I stick with German Cars & American Cars, they're also the same reason I don't like the current 5-series with its Asian like headlights.

Fix the whole rear-end (Taillights!), shorten & line up the grill with the headlights and you've got a great looking car.

The interior has a better driver oriented feel to it and a refiend luxurious look. It does have a simpler look, which I don't mind 'till the CS goes into prod. The taillights are still growing on me. Overall, I like it. But I'm not too impressed with it.
