Is Lexus Missing the Boat By Not Having a BMW CS Competitor?
Whether you realize it or not, most manufacturers have a halo car, be it Ford with the GT, Chevrolet with the Z06 and the upcoming ZR1 or Nissan in bringing us the GT-R.  They know that the halo isn't for everyone, but the intent is to infuse the rest of the lineup with the excitement that the halo car produces.

Of course the high end makers aren't immune to the halo effect, in fact it could be argued that the benefit for these makers is much larger in that the price points tend to be higher across the board, and the impact of a big hitting halo car can trickle down throughout the entire lineup creating excitement and buzz that might not have existed prior.

BMW is aware of this fact which helps explain the forthcoming CS.  While the 7-Series has been the hot topic this weekend, truth be told the real excitement is when the CS is shown to the public.  Of course BMW is not the only one out there with a halo car in the wings, Porsche and Aston Martin both have fast sleek 4-door sedans coming our way as well that will compete with the BMW CS and help drive traffic through showroom doors.

Lexus seems to be the lone man out on this one though.  Granted the LF-A has been shown in both coupe and convertible form, however the fact remains that a sleek 4-door sedan from Lexus would go a long way to shake off the current perception of Lexus being a very well built, but boring automobile.  Exciting is not a word most use to describe Lexus, but what if a halo sedan was brought to market to compete with the BMW CS, Aston Rapide and Porsche Panamera.

Of course Lexus is mum on this subject, but I can't help but think that if enough people sounded off on the idea, the development folks at Lexus might start taking a serious look at this rapidly developing segment of the market.  Lexus quality and refinement wrapped in a sleek coupe like sedan, the very concept is one that would be a winner from day one.  Given the technological leader Lexus tends to be, I would even go as far as to suggest that it could be developed with Hybrid technology to further set it apart in the segment as well as the market.

The fact is the BMW CS, Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide are all coming to market, wouldn't it be fun to see what a Lexus version would look like.  I for one think Lexus should get busy and show the world what it is capable of.  Imagine a fast, fun, sleek luxurious 4-door coupe from Lexus showcasing the best of what Lexus has to offer in terms of technology.

Sounds like a winner to me, but what do you think?

shouldn't the article state is lexus missing the boat by not having a mercedes cls competitor?

is there any confirmation of the BMW CS being put into production?

the gs is probably the closest car they have to a mercedes cls. if they are smart they will make the next gen gs a true cls competitor.

I agree, it's kind of funny to be talking about Lexus missing the boat by not having a competitor to a vehicle BMW doesn't even build, at least not yet anyway. In fact, none of those cars are out yet -- Panamera, no, Rapide, no, CS/8-Series, no. The only similarly themed vehicle that is available is the CLS, and it's not going to be in the same class as these.

Maybe the better question is "is every other manufacturer missing the boat by not offering a Mercedes CLS competitor?"

Why when Diesel is better than Hybrid...
it has been proven many times that the E320cdi is more economical than a GS450h.
The new Jetta TDi is also CLEANER than a Prius.

"Lexus doesn't miss the boat, Lexus creates the cars which competitors strive to build."

LOL. Thanks for my morning laugh. MB pretty much developed the car! Without out them and BMW, Lexus wouldn't exist as a nameplate. So how do you figure? Lexus just copy, which type of car have they actually created all by themselves?

"Lexus has nothing to worry about by not having a CS competitor. But BMW and MB have to worry about not having a hybrid."

Outside of USA, very few hybrids are seen. And the only ones i see are the Prius, because no one wants to pay Lexus prices. And hybrids won't take over btw...

Never liked Lexus, they copy innovation from other companies and put it on their cars claiming that they created something new.

Actually, Lexus did invent one very important segment in our market, and that's the crossover (car-based SUV, to be specific).
I understand that the big daddy Toyota already had their versions, but Lexus with the round-shaped RX actually started the buzz, which brang us the Merc ML (which really wasn't a good car but was a start for Germans, who aren't experts at making SUV's)

Look at the crossover market today...and its success...and Lexus actually started it all.

Mr. WorldofLuxury,

You claim the Germans aren't "experts at making SUV's", but the harsh reality for you is that the Germans have produced some of the most offroad-capable SUV's in the history of the automobile. Mercedes' kicked of the the tradition as far back as 1906 / 1907 and in the 1930s Mercedes has had the G3 and G4 military SUV's and a number of AWD military heavy-duty trucks with the German Wehrmacht during World War II. After World War II, Mercedes-Benz brought out the Unimog, which is a legend in the offroading community and is even used by our own army (I'm an American). Currently Mercedes' offers the superb G-Class and GL-Class which are excellent offroaders. And contrary to popular belief, the ML is also very offroad capable. Reviews regarding the new GLK have also been very favorable, even offroad. Volkswagen with their Touareg and Tiguan have also produced highly capable offroaders. The Audi Q7, BMW X3 and X5 and the Porsche Cayenne are "decent" offroad, but not as good as the SUV's from Mercedes and Volkswagen.

On a further note, the Mercedes ML came out a few months prior to the Lexus RX. And yes, it wasn't a great car but it was far more offroad capable than the Lexus RX.

I am not denying that Toyota has some great 4x4's in their inventory, past and present, but your ridiculous claim about the "Germans not being experts..." had to be countered.

WorldofLuxuryWorldofLuxury - 7/6/2008 7:27:25 PM

lol...I guess what I said was a bit too harsh and very broad.

I know the Germans had the G-wagon that was used during war and still used today for desert uses, but I meant to point to how the first ML wasn't that practical of a car for family use on the road.
A rear facing car seat did not fit, the power was either weak or sucked so much gas that you couldn't get to Las Vegas from LA w/o stopping for gas.

I apologize for being too broad...I was pointing towards the car-based SUV's since that is what the German companies have stuck to for their road-going vehicles...the models before the 21st century just weren't very good. Of course they're better these days...everyone is...ugh...lol...I can't make up my point. Sorry x]

BMW is not Germany's econo-brand. They make great cars whether you choose to believe it or not. Lexus was originally sold here in the US but later expanded to sales worldwide. They have done very well for themselves.

You were bashing me on another article earlier about me being a badgewhore. Look who is talking now :). The difference between me and you is I'm not arrogant despite what cars I have. In the end of the day I still respect all automakers. Without them we wouldn't be here arguing in the first place.

Since you're saying BMW and Lexus are for people with low income what car do you drive? Bentley? Rolls? Zonda? no wait... The GT-R! cause you were criticizing ME! earlier. I don't like hypocrite's...do you?

Well to me, Lexus seems more like they're more about sales than BMW, Porsche, or Aston Martin. A halo car would most likely be pricey and therefore have low sales numbers. That's probably the reason for Lexus' absence of a car like this.

To call the rapide a halo car, or the panamera for that matter is to miss the point. There is nothing halo about these cars. Aston has a DBS which would be much more likely to be considered halo car, especially in light of bond placement, and porsche has the carrera gt. Shouldnt a "agent" be more informed, I just dont get it, amateur journalism stinks

Lexus is not missing the boat in this market(CS,Panamera,Rapide)-they don't have the customer base that will support sales of a vehicle in this class.

There are not many people who would plunk down $160K-$200K for a Lexus. Not going to happen.

Individuals with that type of discretionary income are not going to drive a Lexus. They will invest in a mftr that has a history and the ability to support this price point.

The 9 Series (CS) will be interesting. I think the Panamera will be very cool. Porsche knows what they are doing. The Aston, well we will have to see. But it is stunning to look at.

The French had a kerosine powered vehicle before Benz. The difference is that Benz had the foresight to patent the idea and claim it as his own.

Fair enough, I haven't the time to do research. However, i also followed up with the contributions made by BMW and MB are immense to the automotive history. No company will ever contribute as much as MB has, and will continue to do so. Especially your beloved Japanese brands, just let the Germans do the hard work, and then copy.
