Porsche Cayman-And the verdict is? STUD or DUD?

Ok, so the Cayman has finally surfaced for real.



We have lots more great photos in this issue so you can get a good look if you haven't seen it already.

But the real question everyone wants answered is...

Is the new Cayman a STUD or a DUD?

Is the design worthy of the Porsche logo?

Or is it just an imitator?

Will it sell well or will it sit like a stone?

The head of Porsche USA guaranteed the press in New York, it would be Porsche's best looking sportscar.

Was he right or has his mouth been on the crack pipe a little too long?

Let's get the REAL skinny on the Cayman...

Personally I like the Cayman, I think it is a superb looking car. But how can Porsche charge £7000 to £8000 more for a coupe than the convertible version(Boxster). All other car manufacturers(even Porsche with the 911)charge a premium for a drop top - not the other way round.
If Porsche were to sell this beast at approx £35000 they would have waiting lists till the end of production.

Slightly more powerful engine than the Boxster S and a hardtop does not justify charging MORE. If they really wanted to sell it, they should be charging less for what amounts to be a Boxster coupe. I'm sure it even cost Porsche less to build this than the Boxster S. Anyone who buys this needs a lobotomy since they are getting seriously ripped off....

I think this is the best looking and most exciting product to come out of Porsche in a long time. It handles better than the 911 and with more power, it will truely be a rocket. I know people that have already been working on Boxster projects (wider stance, more power) and this is perfect. It returns Porsche to its most genuine set of roots-small, LIGHT, powerful sports cars. The only thing missing is that new DSG. I will probably buy one and go find a chip kit somewhere.

This writer predicts that the Boxster Coupe will do better than BMW's Z Coupe (remember the hard top variant of the original Z3 that looked like a 2-seat station wagon?) -- Some consumers will really like this "poor man's 911", but over time, its following will prove to be too minute to justify continued production.

Stylistically, the tail looks beautifully done, but the profile sports a roof line that looks disproportionately heavy and thick. One Thumb Down" to Porsche for making a car that looks good from only some viewing angles.

From the rear its unique design lives upto what you'd be paying for this thing but from its sideview as I remember from other pic. it looked like a shit that hit the fan splattered all over the wall!

I think it's pretty handsome. For 50k I'm sure they could have sold a ton of these to the wannabe 911 crowd, so we'll see how the pricing affects it. I wouldn't buy a Boxster because I don't like convertibles, so this is an attractive product in my mind, and not simply something which will detract from Boxster sales. If anything it might be harder to sell used 911s when you can get a brand new Cayman.

i can almost guaruntee they would sell more models if they changed the name from 'Caymen' to 'Carmen'.

anyways, this car should be sold as a boxster coupe without adding on 10 grand and maybe i would change from dud to stud

I think this is a major desing improvement over the Boxster and much better looking than the current 911 Carrera. That said, for what they're asking I'd buy a Vette and put the difference into a very long vacation.
Incidentally, a mid-engined car is much more stable than the 70 year old Porsche rear engine concept. Sure their engineers have tweaked the hell out of it to remove it's more overt tendencies, but starting with a clean sheet of paper, them most certainly wouldn't be using a rear engine today.

tankertoad - The GT2 and GT3 cannot be compared to any of the other 911 line ups - they are completley different cars - if they done a GT2 / GT3 convertible it would be $5000-$10000 more as per the 911 Turbo.
