WOW! Porsche expanding line beyond Cayman to compete against Mercedes?

sounds to me that Porsche will be the first German Hybrid car maker! I thought it was going to be S-class but guess i was wrong about that! Hopefully Benz do away w/hybrid simply b/c they seem to be having trouble w/anything electronic and would be a nightmare for these folks if hybrid was involved and then reliablility problem would be even more legendary than now!

Porsche. From the "Doctor Jekyll/Mr. Hyde" File, Porsche, our favorite schizophrenic car company, is at it again. On the one hand, they're about to release what's shaping up to be the hottest production Porsche sports car in years - the Cayman S (we're excluding the stunning Carrera GT because we're talking real world here). With the "factory-approved" pictures just starting to trickle out on the Internet, the mid-engined Cayman S Coupe might just be the most seductive "street" Porsche since the legendary 904. But while we were settling in to drool over the pictures and read about all the tweaks Porsche did to the car to differentiate it from the Boxster, word came that Porsche would formally announce plans for a hybrid version of the Cayenne SUV at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September. The fact that Porsche is investigating hybrid systems isn't news, but how they'll go about it is. Watching as Cayenne sales are starting to slow dramatically with the rising cost of fuel, Porsche is rushing to get a hybrid version of its SUV to market, probably linking up with its SUV program sharing partner, VW, to get it done. Here we go again. Porsche deviated wildly from its roots to execute a "me too" strategy in the market when they made the decision to do the Cayenne. Instead of taking the opportunity to build a forward-thinking sport vehicle with AWD capability, something lithe and light and true to the '50s Porsche idiom, they took the low road and did yet another variation on the bloated SUV concept. And now, with hybrid technology gaining attention with each passing day, Porsche has the perfect opportunity to do a hybrid designed for genuine driving enthusiasts - something lithe, light, sporty and radical - and something that would turn the automotive world upside down with its visionary thinking and conceptual brilliance. Instead, they'll give us a hybrid version of their SUV. We still like the authentic side of Porsche, the company that builds cars like the new 911, the upcoming Cayman S and the Carrera GT. But the Dark Side of Porsche is giving us a headache.
