Audi R8 Smoked By Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon.
Few sports cars at any price have garnered as much attention and accolade as the sexy, saucy, and very fast Audi R8. So imagine one being outgunned by a housewife in, of all things, a station wagon. That’s exactly what could happen with this über-fast and über-rare über-wagen, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon.

Picture it: you’re at the wheel of your brand-new R8. A black Benz E-class pulls up, and the driver puts down her phone long enough to toss you a sideways glance over her latte followed by a nod to the horizon. Surely she jests. An E-class against an R8? This should be easy, you think. As the light turns green, you notice the “6.3” badge on the fender and hear wheelspin. Uh oh.

You get on it with all four wheels gripping. Your ears are pinned back as you blast to 60 in four seconds flat, neck and neck with the Benz. 100 mph and what’s this? She’s pulling away! Then you start to get a view of the sheetmetal aft of the B-pillar: she’s in a station wagon! A quarter-mile later, she’s still pulling away. At 130 mph, are those her kids laughing in the rear-facing jump seats? Within 23.5 seconds, she’s at 150, 1.2 seconds before you. Mercedes’s seven-passenger station wagon will outaccelerate the R8 all the way to its 155-mph governor. And now the driver is probably back on her pink Razr to tell her BFFs all about it.

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon --- Audi R8
0–60: 4.0 seconds --- 0–60: 4.0 seconds
1/4: 12.5 @ 115 mph --- 1/4: 12.6 @ 113 mph

How is an R8 a VW?

Anyways the E63 is a beautiful car. I'm not surprised it can beat an R8 straight line power. Mercedes is a top notch company building superb engines.

Top gear did tests comparing Merc's AMG cars with their competition and on a track, any track, the Mercs are crap. At the first bend the R8 would be out of sight, you can write these articles till the cows come home but they are pretty meaningless.

Don't you realize what you're saying?. An R8 is a purpose built road going super car that is also capable on a track. The E63 is a performance wagon based off a performance sedan that has always beat it's direct competition in straight line acceleration. Mercedes is first and foremost a luxury brand. However their sportiest offerings are not "crap". They build world class engines. Just because you don't like Mercedes doesn't mean you can't respect it.

It is what it is, a fast wagon.

Funny you should mention a stop light race being meaningless then bring up the idea of a station wagon and race track in the same paragraph.

The R8 is still first and foremost a road car. Most wont see the track but I would bet money that lots and lots will see friendly stop light races. In that sense, I think this article is less meaningless than your comment.

The E63 is the better one. The E63 is a better car. It seats 5 people, instead of 2, has 4 doors instead of 2, and other drivers don't cut you off and pull the finger at you like they do in the R8 (though not as much as they do in the Porsche 911).
It also has a trunk that you can use and is more conventional, and probably a bit more easier to maintain.

I wouldn't call .1 of a second in the quarter mile being smoked. Just a little over a car length. Not that this isn't unexpected, the E63 has a monster engine. But nothing that the V10 R8 isn't going to fix. The other comparisons are a little more interesting.

But put the E63 on the track and it will get nuked by the R8. The S6 already is about 3 seconds faster than the E63 sedan on the track, so you can imagine what the R8 will do to it.
That is just a silly comparaison...
AMG cars (except the new C63) are incredibly fast in a straight line, but when you have to make some turns, their faults come out very quickly.

I wouldn't say the E63 smoked the R8 but won with little room to spare. Even still I've always felt Audi shouldn't have dropped the RS4's engine in the R8, or at least should've come out with the V-10 first.

However an even crazier race would be the Jeep SRT-8 vs. an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, in which the Aston would truly get smoked!

Threepoint1415926Threepoint1415926 - 7/15/2008 12:31:42 PM

The Jeep SRT-8 is the 60ft king! Super high gear ratios, 4 wheel drive and big engine means it will smoke almost anything from stoplight to stoplight. Italians, Brits and Germans included. Just better hope that race ends at the next stop light before that brick starts to shift into higher gears.

Plenty of videos on Youtube show the ML63 beating the SRT8. Granted, the higher gear ratios alloy the SRT8 to get the jump, but after 100mph+ it's no contest.

I would say the Supercharged AMG engine would do better at the strip vs SRT8.

The 60' time is usually a measure of the drivers reaction time.

Not much of a surprise an amg would win a straightline race; thats all theyre designed to do. Put both of them on a road with even a hint of a curve and the pig would get passed and left by the R8 every time.

on a straight line even a TOYOTA Camry can compete with a big enough engine... add a few turns and lets see how the wagon's handling compares to the super sports car, the R8.

Another thing, sure the wagon can hold kids in the back seats, but if it had actually carried the weight of the kids in the comparison, the added weight would have made it a bigger PIG than it already is and we wouldn't even be talking about this.

This is a STUPID comparison.

I think everyone is missing the humor of this article. Everyone under the sun knows that the E63 wouldnt hold a candle next to the R8 in the bends. That wasnt the point. The comparison was meant to be humorous by jesting about the family wagon passing the supercar on the way to soccer practice.

poor comparison, but the E63 Wagon is far from "pig" status. You're talking like it's a Toyota Sienna. It's going to handle turns better than the majority of autos in the world.

This is an unfair comparison, but it is funny! If you put a big enough engine into a station wagon, it'll outrun anything short of a Bugatti in a straight line! And watching the supercar's facial xpression when he's smoked by a little old lady from Pasadena would be priceless!

Still, if you put the R8 and the E63 AMG on a race track, it would be embarrassing for the Mercedes wagon. AMG-tweaked Benzes are fast and stop well, but they don't corner much better than the standard Mercedes models they are based on.

The E63 is no comparison to the R8 on the track(whos sole purposes was built for the ring), but it is no dog on the bends no matter what all of you want to believe.

Secondly, the R8 will be faster then the E63 at the extremes, far beyond what most drivers would even be able to modulate....meaning, in most races between amateurs, the R8 will have little advantage.

Thirdly, granted @ the 1/4 mile it(E) is about 1 car length ahead, but notice the trap speed, it will only widen.

The cars were built for different purposes, they will obviously never be cross-shopped, so the "put a SRT10 engine in a minivan" argument is moot. Not to mention that both cars are built @ the factory.

When did 0.1 second difference equate to getting "smoked"? Maybe if one car did the 1/4 mile in 0.2 seconds, and the other car did it in 0.1 seconds - twice as fast - it would be significant...

E63 AMG is a fun toy.
Now, back to reality.
WHERE'S MY CDI WAGON?????????????

You can buy a practical car (wagon) with a crap gas engine, or an E-class sedan with a practical (diesel) engine.

Why can't you get a practical engine in the practical car???
Almost everyone buying a wagon wants a diesel. And the most recent ones in the US are 1987 and selling like they are made of gold.

Come on MB, wake up!
