New BMW 7-series model coming to the states?
Check out what one of our readers spotted in a parking lot last week...
We've heard rumors the diesel 7 is coming to the USA but does this confirm it?

Hi,
Living in Belgium where the average gasoline price reaches a whopping 5 dollars/gallon (and rising since the EURO is under siege), my only sensible option is a BMW 730 Diesel, which drives even smoother than the BMW 735i I test drove.
The picture you're showing is of a 2 year old 740 Diesel (light colored stripe underneath the trunk lid). If ever I move to the USA (where I am already spending 2 months per year), I'll certainly take my 730 diesel along (quiet, fast ànd frugal). Regards. Marc

BMW 7 Series is an awesome seller, due to a recent expansion into new markets But in the U.S., sales have declined precipitously to 16,155 in 2004!!!! IMO, BMW tried way too hard and fast to impressive American market i.e. idrive and failed miserably and this was probably due to the wave after waves of onslaught of Japanese Luxo selling at a breakneck speed and numbers..If BMW stayed w/comfortzone such as not having idrive or wacky/tacky exterior design, BMW would be doing okay right now. Company top exec.failed American market b/c they didn't study Americans but only themselves and European markets. For example just take a look at Apple ipod! Simple, functional and it works. Now if you take a look at Lexus, Infiniti or Acura they all use voice recognition sys. and or touch screen sensors instead of complex idrive. BMW need to learn from them and extract good ideas from them if want to stay competitive in this dog eat dog world of auto. marketing.

Another thing...
BMW 7 aced the J.D.Power APEAL survey, which polls new owners on some 110 attributies including styling and ergonomics. 7 Series was most successful 7 series ever...18,309 7 series were sold (record) up from previous peak of 18,309.
BUT...
Frank Markus of Motor Trend editor (JUN2005 issue)is quoted by saying:
Indeed this 7 is a global best-seller, thanks to
recent expansion into new markets But in the U.S., sales have declined precipitously to 16,155 in 2004-a level below all but the first and last years, lesses longed for the "APEAL" of normal radio buttons and walked away from their 7s.
iDrive, ended up getting the most significant revamp. Shoving the knob toward the eight compass points still accesses eight menus, but once in a menu there's no more sliding the knob-only twisting and pressing. The main screen is divided into 2 areas, and the border between them is now an arc with an indicator ....etc...
((To summon it up)) Technical advancement is vital to the industry, but mere mortal drivers must be able to use it. New user interfaces, like new styling concepts, are best implemented gradually and methodically. BMW will never admit it, but the 7 overshot the American driver's comfort zone in 2002. 2006 model might just succeed in reversing back into that zone. Either that, or I'm full of Hubris.
-End of Frank Markus's quote.
(my opinion)
7 Series is a great car, I know this as a "FACT" and no doubt in my mind. If, I wanted a giant poster of a badass car this would be the ONE tacked on the wall of my office(computer room ha ha) and that's no bull. I also accept my dumbass couldn't afford this beauty either! But, I'm going to stick with this author's view about why 7 Series are slipping on sales which he blames on the iDrive. 7 Series is an awesome car..iDrive is also on my mind a great piece of engineering marvel b/c it controls supposedly over 700-plus functions w/basically a small round knobs w/buttons on it! Perhaps what this editor and I are both agreeing is this: Americans like simplicity while Europeans might want something more complex. That's why I brought up Apples' ipod's simple operation which led to a smashing hit in the U.S.
To summon it up:
1) 7 Series is perfect.
2) iDrive is perfect?
3) American's generally do not like the iDrive!
4) BMW decided to sell iDrive in the U.S. anyway and ignored American consumer's complaints about complexity of the iDrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5)U.S. sales of 7 declined to only 16,155.
6)But sales of 7 Series is probably setting new sales record elsewhere, however?
Thumbs down on your post.

Oh yeah, the 7 series is the ugliest car on the road. <---What are you talking about??
"He was distinguished for ignorance - for he had only one idea and that was wrong." <---Tell that to the designers of idrive.
Is there anything I need to know about you other than your a grungy social outcast? <---Working on Junior year in college / 12 years in the U.S. Marine Corps/ Served during Operation Iraqi Freedom w/Combat Action Ribbon/Disabled Veteran of Combat...So yeah you are correct when you made fun of me by saying I was disabled.
if your weren't so grossly fat <---I happened to be a Former full marathon runner of 26.2 miles X 3 and last one being 2000 LA Marathon sponsored by Honda LOL.
But you do have one thing correct and that is my grammer does suck. ha ha
