Next-generation BMW M3 CSL coming next year with 470-hp

BMW is working on the next-generation BMW M3 CSL which will arrive with the updated 2010 M3 model year. Like its predecessor, the new M3 CSL will drop all the standard equipment to lose weight. So that means no radio, no navigation system and no air-conditioning.

BMW will also drop a lot of weight with the extensive use of carbon fiber in the front apron, hood, roof, side panels and rear bumper. Like the old CSL the luggage compartment will be made of extremely lightweight cardboard.

Of course, you’re all wondering what’s going to be under the hood. According to AutoZeitung, power will come from the same 420-hp 4.0L V8 engine of the standard M3. I would agree, until you think of the possibilities:

1) Track Day
2) Auto Cross
3) Club Racing

Of course for that price, they should add a roll cage, racing seats, and 4 or 5 point harnesses at no extra charge.

Theres plenty of BMW badge whores who worship everything BMW.I get stopped 10 times a day by mostly under 25 ghetto wannabe surburban kids asking me about my 08 M3.When i tell them that the whole DCT transmission is going to get replaced next week (after only 1500 miles) they dont want to hear it.

470 out of a 4 liter! that is impressive.thats 117.5 hp/liter. I would bet this will be as fast as a standard Ferrari F430. The only engine that has more hp/liter is the F430 Scuderia with 118.5, and considering the Ferrari's will cost twice as much. The CSL will be a bargain for such an amazing car and engine.

Well, the 997 Porsche 911 GT-3 RS has about 415hp from a 3.6L and Honda's S2000 got 240hp from a 2.0L engine.

I believe the S2000 from honda has everyone beat with 120hp/litre before they increased the displacement to 2.2 litres for more torque.

True, but the Honda is a four cylinder, im not taking anything away from the Honda, but it is easier to make a smaller motor rev higher, there are less moving parts, its almost like a motorcycle engine.

I've always liked the CSL from the previous generation. I've had the chance to drive one and it's definitely more potent and more track-ready compared to the more luxury packed normal M3. They saved weight on body pieces and internals in the old one so I only expect even more with this new gen.

Cool car. Wonder what the weight goal is?? Being a CSL its lb/hp value needs to beat the new CTS-V at the very least. Really it should be targeting Nissan GTR in overall performance though. With 470hp it doesn't need much weight reduction to catch the GTR in lb/hp, so it should have it beat in that respect as even the CTS-V has the GTR in that respect, but not sure how they will deal with traction and cornering grip?? Guess as a track oriented car it can probably be tuned to ride like one and most won't complain.

"The 2010 BMW M3 CSL is expected to make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to kick-off in the beginning of 2010. BMW will make only 100 units of the M3 CSL with pricing estimated at less than 90,000 euros ($143,176)."

It should be a track monster. Will also probably be BMW's fastest car on the ring.
