Antonio Tognana suffers injuries in an accident

The Italian pilot Antonio Tognana (Team Porsche Italia) suffered injuries in an accident during the sixth stage from Omsk to Nowosibirsk. In the evening, the organizer Richard Schalber disclosed, that the Italian suffered an injury to a vertebra. His co-driver Carlo Cassina survived the incident unharmed.

The accident occurred at kilometer eight of the special stage. Tognana, who already was a pilot at the Transsyberia Rally 2007, overlooked a bump and took it with too much speed. Tognana is in Nowosibirsk at the moment, being looked after by the attending medical team. The Italians will be flown back to their home country by airplane on Thursday. Since the medical team will accompany the transport to the airport, the organizers have canceled tomorrow’s special stage.

Jeez, that's pretty bad. Feel sorry for the drivers. They should have bought an X5 diesel.

I'm glad they are alive and I wish for no one to ever get hurt in these events. But I guess they should have taken the Jeep instead. Never send a Porsche to do a true off-roaders job.
