American firm to supply Audi superchargers

How do they know the horsepower rating if they just now chose which supercharger to use?

Audi unveiled the engine officially last month. This press release is a little late, but it confirms what we already now.

Like all the Toyotas, BMWs, Mercedes, etc... that they build in the US?

I would be shocked if the next-gen S4 loses 50 hp relative to the current model. Sure, it would be a good replacement for the current NA 3.2L, but they'll need to crank the boost before this motor goes into the S4, let alone the RS4.

Initial applications will have the 290hp version, meaning the A6, the S4 version will be 340-350hp...

guess what? This is the latest and most high tech supercharger at the moment. A smaller version of the one that is going into the ZR1.

And did you know that BMW uses Chevy transmissions? Isn't that a pos American company according to you?

plus why would you not want to see an American company suceed while producing a quality supercharger?

When you say BMW turbos don't you mean Mitsubishi turbos? After all, BMW does buy them off Mitsu.
And you'll find that many BMWs used GM transmissions, not ZFs. The current 3 series, X3 and 1 series all use the GM 6L45 transmission.

Wow. So much anger in the idea of a supercharger being built in the US. Why? Yes Eaton produces a roots type blower vs a centerfugal (spl?)Vortec style, and isn't as thermally efficient nor will it produce as much boost...however in the world of boost its not a "one size fits all application" Depending on engine size, vehicle weight, transmision characteristics, desired powerband, etc... all these play a critical role in choosing what power adder you want to place in your vehicle. As wonderful as turbos are, they do have some drawbacks compared to superchargers. You need a larger oil capacity, there is alot of extra plumbing (extra weight to the front), manifolds need to be changed, more moving parts which can break, more expensive to build, suffer from lag (just a generalization)...all these things are tentative downsides of going with a turbo. I'm pretty sure audi researched this when designing their eninge.

On a second note, this is a good opportunity for a US business (which we haven't had in a long time)...and it shows commitment by Audi to the American market. They said they want to put a plant here in the US this looks like to me a good faith gesture, to say "hey...we really care about the US market".

The anger just goes along with anything American. They know very well that any American business can compete toe to toe against any other business in the world especially when it comes to automobiles but because of some of the management screws ups by some company’s there is a misconception out there that the workers are the same way and that all of the American businesses are that way. The media does not help any as they are way to left in the reporting and I honestly believe that a lot of these people are just jealous. Laugh all you want, but that’s where a lot of hatred comes from.
