Jaguar planning much more expensive models
Since announcing the completion of the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata, managers have been talking about pushing the brands upmarket so they can make more profit per vehicle rather than selling them in larger quantities.

Such a move is important because Jaguar’s yearly sales sit at around 60,000 units, a mere fraction of German rivals BMW and Mercedes, both of whom are well above 1m cars a year.

The low sales has resulted in lower budgets to develop new models and being forced to use older powertrain technology.

I wonder if LR still plans on putting the RR moniker on everything, making the LR3 a "Range Rover Country" and, I supose, the LRX, "Range Rover...Coupe?"

I went to a focus group in Los Angeles a few years ago comprised of Range Rover owners.

They showed us all pre-production mock-ups and pics of the models they have out now (LR3, RR Sport, etc) and asked what we thought of using Range Rover across the line.

We all screamed bloody murder because we thought that was diluting the Range Rover brand. Thankfully they didn't go that way.

Sounds like a good idea, Jaguar certainly have the badge to be able to do this.

There really isn't any new information in this article. as we have known for quite some time that Jaguar intends to move up-market. Their foray into economy cars didn't exactly go well and there are no plans to replace the abomination x-type.

This is the move that should have been made 10 years ago. The problem that Jaguar had with moving down-market is that Jaguars were more obscure and rarer, and so most people's perception of them was not concrete. However, when people started seeing cheaper Jaguars they acquired a new perception of the marque- until 10 years ago the cheapest Jaguar was the XJ. This differs from larger more well known companies in that for them less damage is done by moving down-market.

I think the perfect place for Jaguar would be where Maserati is, above mainstream luxury cars like BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes, but not quite up there with Ferrari, and Aston Martin. I think a Jaguar aimed at the Aston crowd wouldnt bode very well, it just doesnt have the name not to mention, they would really need another V12 which they stopped making years ago, the Daimler Xj cars were never a sales success which was a recent attempt at a higher end sedan. Jaguar needs to spend the money on new engines, and platforms before moving further upmarket, and find ways to improve the reasons people wont buy them before challenging cars people will buy based solely on the name. Like the depreciation of the Jags check the price on a Jaguar super V8 portfolio a 100grand Xj that you can buy for less than half of that. They are nice cars, but everything except seems so compromised by lack of funding in technology, engines and interior quality, and the XF would be that much better with new engines and without the S types leftovers...

Hi BMW I think I agree about the placement around the Maser level. However as far as platforms no one has a better more advanced platform than Jaguar. Its just the sheet metal that needs an update. if you read all the reviews, dynamically Jaguar is at the front of the pack. So really Its once again about design.
As for the engines the 5.0 liter is here next year. Direct injection and lots of horsepower. As for the Daimler cars, they were all sold in the U.S. basically before arrival. If I do remember Wards just awarded the XF best interior. And what S-TYPE leftover do you speak of I am not sure I understand that comment?

Today, Ward's celebrated its 9th Annual Interior of the Year Awards where it announced the 2009 Jaguar XF as winner in the Best Premium Car Interior category.

Selected by members of the Ward's editorial staff, the Jaguar XF was evaluated over a two-month period in eight specific interior categories: material selection, ergonomics, driver information, safety, overall value, fit and finish, and design harmony. Within each of these categories, the XF took top place.
“After all of the hard work from the Jaguar design team, it's really satisfying to receive this type of recognition for the Jaguar XF," said Ian Callum, Design Director for Jaguar Cars. "The XF really represents the new design direction we are taking Jaguar and this recognition from Ward's Automotive Group underlines that what we are doing is absolutely right for the brand."
With interior design that is equal to the exterior in terms of crafted execution and visual excitement, the new XF's interior ambiance is enriched by crafted, luxurious materials, sophisticated instruments and calm interior mood lighting. Engineering excellence and attention to detail mean the XF's interior matches the best-in-class for refinement, while Jaguar's intelligent use of technology and driver-friendly touch-screen controls add new layers of comfort and ease of use.
