Trust me, you should buy a Jaguar (Jeremy Clarkson)

It’s hard to find a point in history when a man sound in mind and body could have bought a Jaguar. Certainly it wasn’t possible in the 1970s, when they were made either badly or not at all by a bunch of Trotskyites who spent most of the working day at the factory gates round a brazier, popping inside occasionally to leave their lunch in an inlet manifold and then going on strike again when a foreman asked them to take it out.

There was even a time when the weak and stupid British Leyland management thought seriously about renaming Jaguar the Large Car Division. Hmm. I can see that someone might buy a piece of farm equipment from the People’s Tractor Factory, but that’s mostly because they’d starve or be shot if they bought something else. I cannot see, however, why anyone would want to drive round in a Large Car Division XJ12 when they could have a, er, Bavarian Motor Works 735i instead.

Just so you know Jaguar and Aston have always had similarities and they are both British witch means they both have British sensibilities

Yeah...and not only is it 'cause their both British and both once owned by Ford, they actually share a few of the same designers. One of the Top Gear episodes actually invited two of the designers onto their show.

As a result, when they call the XK and V8 Vantage sisters, they literally mean it.

wow i nvr thought the day would come where i would boost EL34 how times change... btw where is Micheal Taylor? I haven't seen him here for a while did he get the boot? (he does deserve it so i wouldn't be surprised:)

With all due respect, Jagexpert, I think you're reaching here. I'll agree that historically, both Aston and Jaguar have had uniquely British designs/sensibilities/etc, but I never found them particularly similar, until recently, when Callum designed recent models for both. And the old DB7 had some Jag bits (XJS or XK8, I forget), so there was some similarity.


And as for the XF, other than the general shape of the grille and the hood bulge, I still see very little Jag in it. I WANT to love this car, but I just can't. Whenever I see one, it looks "nice", but just not special enough, certainly not Jag enough, and - I can't help it - just too Lexus GS for me. Overall, I just find it a big letdown in terms of looks. I love the fact that it's not retro, but I think it's just too generic.
