Mini Dealers Practically Sold Out Nationwide

Mini Dealers Practically Sold Out Nationwide
The nation's 82 Mini franchises are out of cars, and dealers can do little more than take orders and deliver pre-ordered units for the rest of the year.

As fuel prices have risen, demand for the Mini Cooper has outstripped supply.

"For the last three months, we were selling from inventory," said Jim McDowell, vice president of BMW's Mini division. "There's no way (July) can be as good."

McDowell said that dealers have a one-day supply of cars and that 81 percent of the cars delivered this month have been those that consumers have configured and ordered

Who cares? I'm sure that there is some sort of Lexus out there that can kill Mini. Do not think for a second that BMW can top Lexus at anything. This includes mini.

Lexus fanboy impersonation over.

I borrowed my son-in-law's MINI for 9 days while waiting for my new car. Unfortunately, it was a 2006 with the dreaded jerky CVT. Apart from that, the MINI needs to have a taller SUV version for ease of getting in and out of it. The current MINI ride is too harsh and needs to be softened considerably for comfort. A spine-jarring ride will invite future lawsuits as MINI's young clientele begins to wreck their backs.

enn: its obviously a sports car and when creature comforts are added(leather seats, padding, etc) they increase weight and decrease performance.

I went into the Mini dealership last week because I was considering a Mini for my next car. It turns out they put a 3000 mark up on the car. When I called around, most places give it for MSRP but no one is really that interested in negociating because the car sells so well. I still would have bought the car but it is not exclusive anymore. I see 30 of them on my drive home from work. Also, if I wanted to spend 30,000 on a car, why wouldnt I get something a little nicer? The Minis use to sell for 15K, now they are 30!

Yah, but a buck used to be worth a buck, not $0.50

You should get a minimum of 6% discount off MINI's MSRP -- and that is in the best of times. If the dealer wants more, or tries to add on phoney charges, walk out and you will always have the option of buying a better value vehicle if they don't call you back. To pay more than MSRP is being a sucker and there is no pride in that.

AgentOrange, the buck has not devalued 50% since the new MINI cars were introduced.

"You should get a minimum of 6% discount off MINI's MSRP"

EnnNorak, ever heard of supply and demand. Mini's have along history of selling at or above sticker price. Where did you get 6% discount from? Mini's have about a 8-8.5% markup for invoice as is. Why should any dealer give up a dime on one of the hottest cars on the market.

I Spoke with my local Mini dealer they don't have a new or used car I can buy. I can order one and get it five months from today.

As far as value goes take a look at over all cost of owning a Mini, factoring in fuel economy, maintenance, and one of the very best resell values on the market, it's a helluva a value.

It's called the free market.

"You should get a minimum of 6% discount off MINI's MSRP"

Why? What possible justification could you have for such an ignorant statement? Because it'd be nice if the dealer did that for you? No offense but I hope you're not running or managing a company of any kind, because that's just bad business. The purpose of ANY business is to make as much profit as they can. I don't care if you're selling cars, milk, or Spacely's Sprockets -- you don't discount sold out items. The availability is limited, every one you discount means you have one less to sell for more to someone else. For Mini, there aren't even any USED ones at dealers, they're just flat out sold out. You want to walk out because there's no discount? "Fine, good luck, will the next buyer in line please step forward..."

6% off MSRP my behind.

$30 thousands for a Mini? The BWM 128i is less than that, and the BMW has to be a better deal.

those are pretty much sold out too. But I agree with you, I was watching the Manheim auctions yesterday and several 2008 Mini's brought over $30k with 10k miles on them. For those prices I'd take a 135i sport package all day.

$30K for a Mini is outrageously foolish if "value" was what the buyer was looking for. But it costs money to be "hip" so, these same people who waited in line for the iPhone can now wait in line for this.
