Well, as we can all see from the unpredictable changes in the auto industry for the last decade, it's really easy to get up to the top, but there weren't any promises that it would be easy to stay up there.

Just as usual...no effort means no improvement. That's how Lexus has been for quite a while.

The Japanese typical report DSR (Daily Sales Rate) method. Where your percentages are measured on a daily basis rather than a monthly rate.

The Europeans use a flat out monthly rate. Nissan in their release is changing from DSR to the raw figure for consistency.

The US makers tend to report both ways choosing to use the percentage that places them in the best light.

Lexus sold more luxury vehicles last year than anyone ever. For anyone around in the 1980s, what they did is just incredible.

They are down as they really have nothing new this year, what the LX and IS-F?

"Lexus sold more luxury vehicles last year than anyone ever"

In the U.S. They're #1 in the U.S., barely, though they'll probably cede that to BMW this year. Globally Lexus is waaaaaaaaaaay behind BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. Lexus is going to get hit MUCH harder than the Germans when the U.S. economy sucks and the dollar is weak because they don't have the rest of the world to make money on. When was the last time that happened? Oh yeah, right now.

So don't cry for BMW, they'll be just fine. And they're a damn sight better off right now than Lexus is. If Lexus didn't have Toyota to bankroll them the last 13 months (and probably next upcoming 12 months) would absolutely screw them.

I have guite a few friends in the industry and BMW might have great lease rates but they rape their customers for every last cent. A lot of the US vehicle boom has been built on access to cheap money, like the housing market. Maybe the credit crunch will see an end to some/all of these amazing deals? Only here in the US have we had this benefit, Europe and the rest of the world have had to pay for their cars with real money, the US is an anomaly.

It is interesting to see Toyota/Lexus sales decreases rcently. Toyota caters to a conservative middle class buyer who is looking first and foremost for reliability. These buyers are buying an appliance, they are not interested in the finer aspects of driving and the enjoyment of motoring and owning a fine piece of engineering. Everybody is getting hit in this recession but these conservative buyers are the first to hold back, the real premium marques will fare better.

We are comparing numbers base on YTD(year to date) Toyota/Lexus has set the bar so high on themselves year in and year out, they will show poor numbers in an economy of "today" for comparison matters. No actual money loss, just the loss of "POTENTIAL PROFIT"....so carry on the Toyota/Lexus bashing German Faggots....cause at the end of the day the ones who are loosing out are the Euro-makes, for every car they sell they actually loose money, as for all those high residuals on the leases will soon catch up and bite in the ass big-time!!! Toyota does not have a single car in the top 10 selling cars in Europe. Peugeot has the best selling car, VW has 2nd and 9th, Ford has 3rd and 8th, GM (opel) has 4th and 5th, Renault has 6th, Fiat 7th and BMW has 10th best seller (3 series). Apparently the Prius is not in the top 100 in Germany! The Audi A8 sells better.

Lexus sold 56,000 vehicles is Europe, which includes Russia and other eastern european countries (where Lexus is a good seller). Toyota does not sell the Camry in Europe! They pulled out due to lack of sales.

I found this comment on a blog from AutSavant, an article about Toyota's plight in Europe...(not my words). But I think this sums up a Toyota pretty well.

"Americans like Toyotas because a lot of Americans don't like cars very much. For them a Toyota is perfect. It's looks are bland, so they don't have to think about it. It is reliable so they don't have to think about it. It's not a good performer, so they don't press it's limits and get involved in actually driving, so no need to think about it then, either. No one else will admire it, so no need to talk about it. It inspires no emotion at all. It merely exists."

Old money goes after established brands with history, character and style and new money goes.... yes you guessed.

Lexus and Toyota have had a field day in the US over the past 10-15 years because the domestic product was absolutely crap. Outside Japan, against serious competition they do not do so well, in fact they do not do well at all.

as well as passat "I must say that overall the Passat is a dreary and boring car" :

Europeans don`t switched from their bland passats and jettas becouse they weren`t as unreliable as american cars so it wasn`t necessary .
Russia started to be the biggest toyota market in 2007 , before russia the biggest toyota market was germany which are now 2nd and toyota own`s 5% of german market ( second japanese surprisingly mazda own`s 3% ).

Well Steve27t, I see were this is going. There seems to be a trade off, Europeans I have to agree love the emotional styling of the vehicle, as for the americans loves the somewhat bland style for Toyota, but of coarse the reliability is what makes it for Toyota and the consumers in U.S. But I have to say when it comes to the European market they love the style but don't care aboout the quirks/malfunctions that happens to their rides. And knowing some master techs that have worked on big euro marks in U.S. and Europe, simply say that Euro rides sold in the european nation, can go through a list of problems day in day out without consistent complaints from the owner(like they already know or are just used to the problems to begin with or just don't care). If this were to happen in U.S. people will complain more about the inconvience or how it became a problem in such a short period time of ownership. So that is where the trade off begins, all Toyota has to do is simply show more emotion in their styling, from there it's "GAME ON!!!" Funny though even with just bland styling Toyota continues to be one of the biggest auto producing/and profit leaders to date....scary thought!!! At the end of the day "MONEY IS KING!!!" And money is what can make a company that much better, time will tell very soon for Toyota, in a good way of coarse!!!

Here we go the BMW clones come out and bag Lexus. Have a look at the new 7 series, BMW has copied the LS. So do not think Lexus has to worry when BMW start copying. Drive a Hyundai you have driven a 3 series. In any event who cares people buy the car that you like not what other tossers say.

What is sales difference betweem IS250 and IS350? In LA I see about 5 to 1 in favor of IS250. Female to male about 3 to 1. Any stats?

wow Steve27t, you are quite the sensitive sort or guy. You can drive all the cars you want, I may have not lived in Europe Nation, but have been there quite a few times and appreciate the history and people. Plus I have alot of friend in the European Nation, so the part you say "Get a life", I have more than enough life than you can ever have till your gone. But of coarse this is not the case in point. What I say about the car industry is based on very simple facts. Like I said before, friends that have been master techs that I know who has worked in both U.S. and Europe. Makes like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Renault, and of coarse VW. Tell me stories of what they go through day in day out, and are some what glad this is happening otherwise they would not make as much money as they would like weather it on warranty or not, and save themselves from boredom...catch my drift kid? Hey if you say you had no problems with all the wonderful cars you have ever owned, then give yourself a pat on the back because you represent the 2% of "No probelms", that means Stevie Boy the other 98%.... well I will leave it as that. Not surprised about Toyota not getting as far as they would like in Europe, but time will tell very soon. For as long as they have been in the game they will probably will need another 8 to 10cyears of convincing to crack open the brand loyalty Europe has, as the saying goes "it does not happen over night". And besides fact is Toyota is one wealthy rich bastard of a corporation, and that is with very little support from the European nations....and it will not stop Toyota/Lexus from getting in there and continue to sell "At LEAST ONE CAR" because anything more than that is "ALL GRAAAVVVY!!!" So Stevie Boy, the part of getting a life. I already have one but thanks for the advice....Now it's all about having a fun time!!! By the way how is your wife and my kids?....LMAO!!!

and by the way the part GM and Ford being huge in Europe....I agree with you on that one. Like I said before....you guys are used to quirks/malfunctions so what's the difference between US and European cars, other than styling?....LMAO!!!
