Mazda say NO to 6 Hybrid

Mazda have announced that there are no plans to develop a hybrid Mazda 6. The company believes that the new 2009 Mazda 6 is capable of delivering a cost-effective midsize vehicle without the need of hybrid technologies.

Jay Amestoy, Vice President of public and government affairs for Mazda North American Operations says: “Sure, the landscape has changed during the past six months, but a hybrid is just not something we're planning on doing at the moment,"

We agree that the new 2009 Mazda 6 will be able to deliver great efficiency levels, but we are still surprised nonetheless that they have not opted for a hybrid variant to compete with the likes of Honda and Toyota.

Mr Amestoy says: "Our real-world MPG numbers will be strong, and we just think the fuel economy is pretty good the way it is."

The 2009 Mazda 6 will come in a 2.5L four-cylinder and the larger 3.7L V6 delivering city/highway EPA ratings of 20/29 mpg and 17/25 mpg respectively.

They gotta get hybrid/diesel/fuel cell into there cars now! With the price of gas at least one of those options are required. That may be the only thing left to complete this car.

Good that Mazda is not wasting resources on building hybrids. We need real cars not over-hyped electric wheelchairs like the Prius.

the economics of hybrids doesn't work unless the price for fuel is quite a bit higher than it already is. There are only a few real reasons to buy a hybrid right now: you would like to feel green, or you would prefer to give your money to a car maker rather than an oil company.
