2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 - First Test

Wow!!! Wanna bet the Hyundai Genesis will be more reliable than the MB 550, the Bimmer 550 as well as the Chrysler 500C.

I don't know. My S550 is pretty darn good :) So my money's on mine.

Here's a consumer report article about the S550.

Mercedes-Benz's flagship sedan was redesigned for 2007. The current S-Class maintains the comfort and agility of its predecessor. It also adds a control system that's reminiscent of BMW's awkward iDrive. Although it is frustrating, it is easier to use. An optional night-vision system works well, but can be distracting. The S550 is quiet, luxurious, and a delight to drive, with agile handling. Acceleration from the 5.5-liter V8 is effortless. The cushy ride is extremely comfortable and among the best we've tested. The vast cabin is luxurious and comfortable, and very quiet. Reliability has been below par.

No thanks. My BMW 550i with sport/aero package runs great. Not a fan of Bridgestone Runflats 245/275. Just enjoy your Hyundai Genesis. Looks like small S class.

Genesis proves that the S-class is way overpriced (especially in Canada).

I haven't had to bring my S in yet so you can't all judgment on consumer reports. I had an E500 before and it was fine for me as well. I use to read those consumer reports but realized that to experience it on my own is better and to my luck I haven't had to deal with any of those.

Sometimes its how a person drives their car. If you kick the crap out of any car it will break down period. So who knows how they handle their vehicle. I drive mine normally and rarely push it to the limit. However sometimes I do have a little fun but even then it's still pulled through for me.

Can't speak for all but this is my experience thus far.

As usual richard112360 has nothing intelligent to say. The new S-Class has been very reliable, so I don't know where he is getting this BS info from. Maybe he's quoting one of the few S-Class owners who've experienced problems, something that can happen on his gussied up Toyota LS460 too.

And now, Richard, have a look at this link. I thought the Lexus LS460 was "God"? Guess not. The S-Class soundly beat it in all categories. The LS only tied for performance with the S-Class.

"J.D. Power Ranks Mercedes-Benz Highest In Customer Satisfaction in China"

According to the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2008 China Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study released today, Mercedes-Benz ranks higher than any other automotive brand in customer satisfaction for authorized dealer after-sales service in China. Although it was Mercedes' first time being included in the rankings, the company scored a total of 854 points on a 1,000 point scale, performing particularly well in six of the seven scoring factors: service initiation, service advisor, in-service experience, service delivery, user-friendly service and problems experienced.

Equally as impressive, nearly 40 percent of Mercedes-Benz customers said they received at least 21 of 24 services measured in the study - a rate twice that of the industry average (20 percent). In addition, forty-four percent of Mercedes customers say they “definitely would” recommend their service dealers, compared to an industry average of 23 percent for other automakers’ customers.

Commenting on why dealer after-sales service is so important in the Chinese market, Dr. Mei Songlin, general manager of research at J.D. Power Asia Pacific China operations, had this to say: “With new-vehicle sales in China showing signs of slowing, providing superior customer satisfaction is of primary importance for automakers and dealers. In the highly competitive China automotive market, dealers are finding it increasingly difficult to achieve profitability from new-vehicle sales. Manufacturers are creating differentiation and directing their dealers to grow their business through superior after-sales service, which ultimately benefits consumers.”

As for the other automakers rounding out the top five: coming in second was Audi, followed by SGM-Chevrolet, Citroen, Nissan and Guangzhou Toyota.

Unfortunately for the Genesis's rivals, the outlook doesn't appear any rosier. "We already have a 5.0-liter direct-injected version on the horizon that'll produce well over 400 horses," says Krafcik, "and we're considering forced-induction as well."

Hyundai has arrived.

"As St. Antoine points out, "The Genesis costs barely more than the original 1990 LS 400." If Lexus isn't nervous, it should be. Sure, the Genesis lacks some of the exquisiteness and attention to detail of the LS, whose interior stitching and real wood trim, for instance, are a step above, but the Lexus costs nearly twice as much."


What Japanese do well, Koreans do better.

Lexicon audio is used in the 7 series BMW, Rolls. Phantom, and now Hyundai. There is probably more that I don't know about. As far as I know, LOGIC7 is their name. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Lexicon a subsidiary of Harman Kardon?

I've got Harman Kardon at home and in my Mercedes. THe HK at home is great, the one in the Mercedes is just okay. The Bose in my old Benz was actually better. But Harman does make great sound systems. I love my home system.

Hyundai trying to hide what it is...yes a bit like Toyota ? (Lexus)

TauronB2G, I bought a complete HK Citation series home stereo system back in the seventies and felt no need to upgrade it for decades. I still use the Infinity speakers I bought to get sound in another room running off the same system. HK was number 3 in desirability at the time with only Crown and McIntosh being more desirable. I did not know that AKG is now part of Harman International. AKG makes excellent headsets and I'm still using my old AKG K240 which has a high impedance of around 600 ohms. Other headsets worth considering are some of the newer Bose units which have an even a higher impedance. High impedance is usually not critical but I have an application using non-rechargeable batteries and I want each session to last as long as possible without having to change the battery pack.

my turbo 4 (mazdaspeed 6), can do about 5.5 0-60 with the right driver. I don't know how the weight compares though. I would assume the genesis is heavier. The best milage I've seen is 27 highway, though if I were more carefull I could probably get 30.

The styling is bland, but the performance sounds promising. In any event, i would NEVER drive a Hyundai. I don't care what they do, it will never happen.

Through the quarter mile, the Genesis is quicker than the Hemi-powered 300C and stays door to door with the eight-speed GS 460 (though it posts a higher trap speed than the Lexus). From 0 to 60, it's quicker than both. And despite wearing relatively narrow 235-series tires, the Hyundai delivers the highest lateral acceleration and the best 60-to-0 braking."

Rent one and you might be pleasantly surprised. I know I was.

They popped up at the dealer here in Pasadena about a month ago.

I saw two of them being delivered at a Hyundai dealership by me last week. Not a bad looking car.

I think it is a HUGE step for Hyundai can't wait for the future

How can you be so picky considering you probably dont even own a car. What do you drive? You hate anything German or Asian. If anything, my guess would be a 95 Ford Taurus.

Whats up lexota

The reason why Genesis doesn't have a Hyundai emblem on the front is because of human nature. They realize many people will judge based on marque, not on the actual content offered. This way, they can reduce the "judge a book by its cover" tendency and at least bring people in closer, this is a smart move, northing to be embarrassed about. As for me, if a car is built with Lexus quality and performs just as well, I wouldn't care even if it said "Genesis by Walmart" on the back.

With a weight-to-power ratio of 10.8 lb/hp, the Genesis trails-just barely-the Benz's 10.7, but does so with 834cc less of engine displacement. Hyundai calls it "efficient power." We just call it robust. Bottom line: The Tau has some pow! Also, note the 4.6's impressive fuel economy, which tops that of the Lexus, a car with the same size engine yet two extra gears."

Toyota CEO is even getting scared of Hyundai now.

I saw my first genesis yesterday. While I wasn't blown away, I did get the impression that it could fit right in with the GS, M, RL, etc. Seemed a little asian generic but then again so does Lexus. Hyundai has just moved significantly forward as a real player and I think the future is bright for them. For those of you who think it's just another Buick, I'm guessing if this were Buick, it would be the best car they ever produced. I hate the grill though. When they were decided on front grills, I saw a version with a black honeycomb grill - looked much, much better.

I haven't really seen any Hyundai Genesis's on the road. are people not buying them? Looks to much like the "real" luxury players although I don't consider Lexus to be a true luxury car. Hyundai should stick to a marketing campaign of putting the Genesis against the Chrysler 300, Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, or Ford Taurus/Mercury Montego. Face anyone considering a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, or Infiniti wouldn't think of going to their neighborhood Hyundai dealer, just not logical. Hey they tried, but they should have been more original with their design, and the interior still isn't in my opinion on par w/the luxury sedans they compare it to. This car is like they said a knockoff!

Impressive. I'd rather buy the Genesis than a Cadillac CTS or any Lexus.
