I think the only people that can really feel the difference between FWD and RWD derived AWD systems are rally racers. For the most of it...it's a good system.

I used to hate companies that brag about its powerful supercharged or turbocharged vehicles, but I have come to realize that if the turbo doesn't break, turns the word "turbo-lag" into a myth, and doesn't require experience to operate, the car is okay. That's what I have to say about the Audi RS6 and the new BMW turbos. They deserve their high power ratings.

Auto Bild tested the M5 touring and RS6 Avant a while back and the M5 was only .8 sec slower on its lap around the track then the Audi. I think thats pretty impressive considering the M5 has a smaller V10 5.0 non turbo engine that is 80hp shy of the audis.

impressive or not the M5 still can't match the RS6 so #1 BMW fan has no argument, in another German test the M5 touring was way behind the RS6 Avant

The RS6 has a 5.0 V10 with turbos, 80 extra hp and awd but still gets better fuel economy than the M5.

sure, I have and argument, yes the Rs6 is faster I never said it wasn't.It has more power so it will obviously be faster, whats stopping BMW from putting a 600 hp engine in a car?nothing except that BMW balanced all dynamic elements of there cars better. and yeah I saw the other test it was 4 sec behind over a larger track with more straight aways where any car with big power will dominate.Anyway when you consider that the M5 is how many years old and still is more technologically advanced(engine, 2 international engine of the year awards). I have also seen numerous tests where the M5 was around .5sec slower to 150mph then the RS6 which is nothing and is very impressive, and the M5 is faster from 50 to 70mph, thanks to its brilliant engine. Also the M5 is hundreds of pounds lighter then the porky Audi, which means is more nimble, and when you factor in the rwd the M5 is the default choice for a car and driving enthusiast like me. So ill take the M5 b/c its more driver oriented, more enjoyable to drive, and still fast as heck. And you can have you RS6, I could care less if its faster...there more to a car then that.

carE10, please explain, are you compairing the M5 sedan to an Avant? I've read that the RS6 sedan will be well under 4 seconds to 60 and will be tuned a bit differently than the Avant.

No, M5 touring, if your into drag racing Yeah the RS6 is faster off the line thanks to awd, but that provides numb steering, and the M5 touring actually starts catching up with the Audi at higher speeds.

side note. when they get quick 0-60 times on cars like a manual RS4 they almost red line it then drop the clutch, which is so bad for an awd car, not as bad for rwd but still not good. Anyway if your into 0 to 60 times and live in the real world the BM will prolly be faster, b/c i doubt your going to red line and drop the clutch b/c your car wont last very long, but if you dont the engine will bog off the line and the BMW will be gone. And at higher speeds RWD are almost always quicker than awd, b/c traction is not much of an issue and more power is getting to 2 wheels, then being split between 4. and with out getting that advantage at the start which is brutal on an awd drive train(theres all toughs parts that have to work together), you will lose every time. So in the real world you could prolly drive your BMW harder and will last longer.

like you said, traction is an issue in a 500+ horsepower car so the RS6 will likely do better on a normal road and not a clean race track.

both are probably great cars but the German magazines have rated the RS6 above the M5 (no one says it has a good transmission for daily driving) and the RS6 has more ultimate performance that you can use (but not many take either one to the race track)

the S6 has always finished ahead of your pathetic M5 in every comparo (Motor trend-Road&track and Car&Driver). For crying out loud, an A4 2.0L quattro MT6 pulls a 69.4mph on a 700 feet slalom when the the "all mighty M5" (LOL) pulls a 69.9mph (Road&track numbers).

1evlaudi, well the BMW 135 does it at 70.3 mph so whats your point. The M5 is a larger car of course it wont be as nimble as a smaller car like the A4 or 1 series. what does the rs6 do it in? The R8 does it in 71.4(lol) and get this the M3 sedan does it at 72.3mph.(all these time are from R&T).So take your ALWAYS FOLLOW machine and go else ware.

It's not about defending amazinidiot. It's about defending the M5, one of the most amazing machines of our time. Yes the RS6 might be faster (more hp) but the M5 remains an awesome machine.

the m5 is. the thing is that in this segment (super performance) the newest car usually raises the bar. It all really heated up with last gen RS6 raising the bar above the last gen M5. MB added the E55 to the mix with extra power. then the current M5 came out with even more performance, only to have the latest RS6 to up the ante even again.

I cannot argue that. It is a cycle.

M5 vs. RS6 on wet track or snow or gravel or pavement with a bit of sand or bumps on it (AKA in the real world) ... Get used to the view of the back end of that Audi, because that's all you're gonna see!
