Lexus Leaps Forward In JD Power and Associates VDS Dependability Study

Lexus Leaps Forward In JD Power and Associates VDS Dependability Study
Deterioration in vehicle quality during the first three years of ownership—determined by comparing long-term dependability rates to initial quality problem rates—strongly affects overall customer satisfaction as well as customer willingness to recommend their vehicle model, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today.

The study, which measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old (2005 model year) vehicles, finds that, on average, customers report experiencing 75 percent more problems in the third year of ownership than during the first 90 days. Those models with the largest increase in problem levels show the most pronounced declines in satisfaction and the likelihood of owners to recommend their vehicle model. In addition, while no model has fewer reported problems in the third year of ownership compared with the first three months, those models that average less than 35 percent problem growth actually demonstrate improvement in overall satisfaction during the three-year period.

“Understanding and minimizing quality deterioration is critical for manufacturers, as it is a key driver of owner satisfaction and word of mouth recommendations,” said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. “It is imperative that manufacturers design models that not only achieve high levels of initial quality but also attain high levels of longer-term dependability. Vehicle models that stand the test of time will help automaker profitability through superior owner satisfaction and recommendation rates.”

The study also finds that five of the top 10 problems reported industry-wide in the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study were also among the top 10 most frequently reported problems in the 2005 Initial Quality Study, suggesting that the problems are identified by owners during the initial ownership period, but have not been rectified by automakers during the three-year ownership period.

The problems include:

   1. Excessive wind noise
   2. Noisy brakes
   3. Vehicle pulling to the left or right
   4. Issues with the instrument panel/dashboard
   5. Excessive window fogging

“Although automakers have achieved tremendous gains in initial quality and dependability in recent years by specifically addressing customer concerns, these particular problems still prove challenging for manufacturers,” said Sargent. “The fact that these problems have endured throughout the industry for many years suggests that additional focus on these issues prior to vehicle launch would benefit not only consumers, but also automakers through increased customer satisfaction.”

For a 14th consecutive year, Lexus ranks highest in vehicle dependability, improving by 25 problems per 100 vehicles since 2007 to achieve a score of 120 PP100. Following in the top five rankings are Mercury, Cadillac, Toyota and Acura, respectively.

In addition, Lexus garners six segment awards—the most of any nameplate in 2008—for the ES 330, GX 470, IS 300, LS 430, LX 470 and SC 430. Toyota follows with five segment awards for the Highlander, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, and Tundra. Ford and Honda each capture two awards. Ford models receiving awards are the Crown Victoria and Ranger, while Honda earns awards for the Element and S2000. Models by Buick, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Mazda and Mercury each rank highest in one segment.

SAAB is the most improved brand in the study, although it continues to rank below the industry average. SAAB improves by 65 PP100 since 2007.

The study finds that long-term vehicle quality has improved by 5 percent industry-wide in 2008—with an overall decrease of 10 problems per 100 vehicles—compared with 2007. More than 60 percent of the 38 nameplates included in the study improve in 2008, compared with 2007. Among the 19 segments included in the study, the midsize premium MAV segment demonstrates the most improvement in 2008—36 PP100 fewer than in 2007. The compact car and midsize car segments also have much lower problem levels in 2008 than in 2007, and together account for more than one-half of the overall industry improvement.

“The gains in dependability for compact and midsize vehicles are good news for consumers who are downsizing their vehicles due to increasing fuel prices,” said Sargent. “Consumers who purchase these smaller vehicles benefit not only from immediate gains in fuel economy, but also from improvements in long-term dependability, compared with previous years.”

The 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 52,000 original owners of 2005 model-year vehicles. The study was fielded from January through April 2008.

to LexSucks, exactually what does "batter" mean? you need to define it. as far as connecting driver to the road, BMW builds better vehicles than most lexus, but in term of build comfortable rides, lexus build better cars than BMW. you get one or the other, you cannot have both. build and reliablity is also one of lexus's stength, do you have a problem with that?

give credit to where it's due. I have yet to see another car brand that rises nearly as quick as lexus, or toyota. believe or not, they must be doing something right.

i am also glad to see BMW's quality is up there (may acutally help them to actually sell more cars). but that's before BMW jumped to forced induction. i am quite curious to see how their turbo changed engines holds up against time.

ghosthunter you sound very rediculous for one....saying to help BMW sell more cars??? it is Lexus that is the double digit sales slips...not to mention the 3, 5, and X3 are still the best selling cars in their class....and with BMW ranking above Nissan, Infiniti, and Honda their ranking isnt poor by any means especially being the only European make there. Whats even more ironic to say you cant have a comfortable and reliable car???what are you talking about, BMW builds the benchmark in sport sedans, it is the reason Lexus has an es and an is, or why the gs is attempting(poorly) to be sporty. BMW proves performance, quality, and german engineering can be had with reliability as well......on a side note great job to cadillac, and Jaguar for such an improvement

People bring there car in because of excessive window fogging???? You wonder how accurate this list is for real issues. I wouldn't bring my car in because when the moonroof is open - it is loud. That is crazy! Does one group of owners nitpick over minor things like that? Do the cars on the top of the list just simply have smarter owners that realize how to use the climate control to prevent window fog. I would like to see a list where people report broken items such as waterpump failed - would the numbers get jumbled up?

Don't forget many times a poor score is for extremely minor issues related a specific model.

One model with "fogging" issues may tarnish the entire line. Also there has been a trend show more separation of the scores between brands so whatever they choose to consider a reliability issue may be in question.

Poor sales (compared to last year), profit short fall, and questions about log term product sustainability are all newsworthy.

Not all news is good, name a positive GM or Ford

The main reason for this is tires. You need to replace them !!! Or the owner has hit one to many kerbs and put the alignment out. The percentage times this will be down to something wrong with the car, ie a manufacturing issue is probably zero. So the maker has to take the crap for the customer.

The window fogging issue really has me wondering--never heard of that one in my surveys.

And one other thought just occurred to me: this survey covers an entire year. The IQS covers just 90 days. If the number of problems is only up 75%, even though the time period is four times as long--that's not "deterioration."

you've never looked in the trunk of a VW. Every VW down to the lowly Beetle has a full-size spare. "space saver spares" are for people who never leave the city.
Actually, I think all Audi's have full-size spares. Probably BMW & Benz too. Anything else is not safe!

I really like Cadillac, but they reqire premium fuel and Cadillac parts are very expensive. Lincoln's are easy to maintain since they promarily use Ford Motors, Transmissions and parts. Lincoln/Mercury uses Heavy Duty Engines and transmissions shared by the Ford truck platfoms which gives them the added durability since they tend to be overbuilt. Most people who bash Ford have had experiences with econobox front wheel drivers, Ford's dependability is primarily within the Rear drive platforms.

Where do you get the premium fuel requirement from? The supercharged V's, I'm sure do, but not all Caddy's. Just curious.

If I were seeking an extremely dependable that would last a long time, the choice would have to be a Mercedes with a German Diesel. All the best ocean ships in the world have European Diesel Power-plants when money is no object. The ship I worked on had V12 MAN Diesels. The engineering was spectacular on those motors. The Germans overlook nothing and overbuild everything.

I can not believe that Foggy windows is a defect on a car. It is real simple, either put the dial on vent to get some air into the car, or dail in defrost, because defrost turns the Air Cond. Compressor on, to reduce humidity in the cabin, thus reducing the foggy windows. In the summer, you still use the defrost mode, just turn the temperature dial to cool insted of hot, the compressor will still operate an de-humidify the cabin. Somtimes a short duration of heat on the windshield will get the glass warm enough to keep the water vapor from condesing on the surface. Also, the rear windo de-fog can be used even in summer humidity to keep the glass temperature above the dew-point temperature.

I thought the Lexus and BMW people on this forum were intelligent people, seems like driving a high-end car is not a necessarily a sign of high-intelligence.

Seems the Japanese still let you turn on "recirculate" and defrost at the same time (which doesn't do anything useful).
And the morons who can't understand how a heater/defroster works tend to mostly buy Japanese cars.
On a German car, if you select "defrost" it turns the "recirculate" feature off automatically.
Eventually, the Japanese cars will do this .. just something they haven't copied yet.

Here we go again.... another JD report based on attitudes and moods of the customers. Talk about a scientific and dependable report!!! This report is a joke (at least for those that have any capability of reasoning).

Here's my contribution to the faults list that makes up the JD Powers Report...
(1) the hue in the color of the paint is not satisfactory to my tastes! (therefore it must be a bad car!)
(2) this car is way too fast and is not in synch with the planet!
(3) the driver's seat does not conform to the hump on my back!
(4) when driving over water the splashing occurs in a pattern which I do not like
(5) for some reason bugs smashed against my windshield are stuck there despite me endless attempts to windshield-wipe them off!
(6) I got stopped by a cop because of the attention grabbing bright red color of my sport coupe (thus its a design flaw and not my lead foot that is the cause!)
(7) I hit a car while switching lanes on the highway because the tiny side view mirror did not provide absolute coverage of the rear (anyone heard of the term blind-spot?)
(8) I bought this car thinking I could get more girls but nothing so far, thus its a d-e-s-i-g-n flaw!
(9) While driving to Stowe in the winter I skidded off the road and hit a guard rail (not due to my overinflated worn out summer tires but because its a d-e-s-i-g-n flaw!)
(10) I didn't know I had to change the oil every 3000 miles and my car didn't remind me, so THAT is a design flaw too.

I HATE THIS SURVEY! It doesn't report real problems with a car, more or less it is people's gripes. One year MINI ended up at bottom because they had small cupholders and a small rear seat.... SMALL REAR SEAT! Hell it is named MINI!!!! LOL! The windows fogging? DUH Turn on the air conditioner and watch the fog "lift away"! Dumb!! Now if they truly reflect actual issues like things breaking and not just complaints, I would take it more seriously.

I got this survey about 4 years ago and it was bogus in my opinion. I read over it and half the questions are about actual issues, the other half were more like places to bitch about things, like is the reception area of the dealership nice.... do you like the tire feel of your car... and if you said you didn't, they considered it a dependability issue, equal to that of an engine failure. So I don't look at this survey for anything.

Point is, when it comes to dependability and reliability, lexus has just about always been #1. Give lexus credit for owning this segment. BMW owns performance, thats accepted. Now just give Lexus this a leave it alone. If BMW were #1 this would have mainly consisted of positive comments and a few idiot rants by MT, silver, etc..

The lexus guys here make it hard to give Lexus credit, I suggest STFU, I mean, the proof is in the pudding, 14 years at #1. There is nothing to debate and argue, that is their major selling point.

Lexus is so influential, it got OTHERS to get their act together with quality, from the GErmans to non luxury brands, which means THE CONSUMER WINS!! Notice 60% of the brands improved.

It is just known that BMWs are good cars but they will give you problems, hell BMW knows this, thus their free maintenance program. I hardly know anyone wiht an old BMW and those I do know, always say two things-
-I love my BMW
-I always have to fix it

The majority of Lexus parts are made by Toyota. Engines, chasis, brakes, hoses, etc. These parts were designed years ago and Toyota's are engineered very conservatively. Of course they are going to be reliable. Do you see Toyota transmissions with PDK or SMT tech? The 3.5V6 used in ES/RX/GS has been around for years. I would hope it is reliable. The ES/RX is over 50% of Lexus autos.

Yes, Lexus uses Toyota parts supplied by vendors. These parts were first used on Camry and now RX/ES, 60% of Lexus sales. Point is these parts have been in service for 6+ years. Friend is GM of Toyota dealership. RX/ES are very basic cars. Just like LX is based on Landcruiser, GX on 4 Runner.

If the Euros, Infinity, Lexus, Honda, Hundia, and Jag dominated the top, people would be saying "see, told you so, Americans can't build a good car anymore" and this study would become the bible guide for all cars.

Interesting that despite high reliability ratings, lexus sales continue to drop month after month while BMW and Mercedes show sales growth. While I applaud Lexus for their attention to detail - it looks as if most consumers appreciate how the car makes them feel and how it feels versus a # 1 spot on a reliability survey.

If Lexus owners actually drove their cars, this might be meaningful. But its not.
HERE'S SOME SCIENTIFIC WEB RESEARCH.
I went onto autotrader.com and searched for 2 luxury cars of the same approx. price (LS430 and Audi A6) from 2005 year within 50 miles of my old zip code in Redmond WA (98052).
I SORTED THE LISTINGS BY MILEAGE and added together the 3 highest mileage cars of each make.
RESULTS:
LEXUS: 151,000 miles
AUDI: 222,000 miles
Meaning AUDI DRIVERS DRIVE 50% MORE than LEXUS DRIVERS!

Or, to fairly compare against 3-year-old cars of other makes, you have to pick a 4.5 year old Lexus!

Everyone knows that Lexus are bought by 2 groups:
* really OLD people
* not so old people who ACT like they're really old!

Hopefully, these survey results will give you Lexus fans something to gloat over while you're rocking on your front porch.
Meanwhile, turn off that blinker and get out of the left lane, because us German car drivers are doing business and going places and your Lexus is IN THE F**ING WAY!!!

I hear that the 3 series seats are uncomfortable though. If you go BMW, you have to really spend more to get more and a 5 series is likley more equivilent in seat comfort to a large American sedan (of course I'm not drawing parallels to performance, I'd never compare BMW's performance with American sedans, I'm referiing to seat comfort only)

If I were to take the plunge, I don't see the point in going half way on an Acura. Might as well go all the way and go BMW. Besides, I change my own Oil and fuel filters, so it can't be that expensive to do it your self, even if you use original BMW parts.

I just noticed a few non sequiturs on this list. A Mercury is basically a Ford with a different badge, a different grille, and maybe a slightly snazzier interior. Mercurys are made in the same factories as Fords. So why is Mercury the second most "dependable" marque, while Ford ranks 14th?

Cadillac is the third most dependable marque, and Buick is sixth. Way to go, GM! However, Pontiac is 19th, GMC is 20th, Chevrolet is 26th, and Saturn is 30th - not so impressive! A lot of GM cars are basically badge-engineered siblings of each other. Why are Cadillac and Buick so much more dependable than the other GM marques?

Any ideas?

It could be largely attributed to Service Dpet competency. Our Solstice has been in the shop 7 times for the stereo (6 fix attempts and 1 replacement) and 8 times for the rear-end (7 fix attempts at the same dealership as the stereo, and one fix at a different, competent dealership).

It is a 1st 1000 VIN, so I expected some bugs, but the real problem was Snell Pontiacs inept service department that was unable to fix it in the first 7 attempts.

My Cadillac was great, and I had only very superficial issues that were fixed immediately. Great service there (wish I still had it!)

Defects are less of a concern to me. i'd rather drive a car that performs well and has a nice ride. If somthing breaks, I'll just buy replacement parts and fix it, no big deal. But the ride, performance, space and capability is something you have to live with evertime you are behind the wheel. I'd rather have an Audi A8L that requires some care and money to take care of than a Lexus that has a high probability that nothing will fail. lets face it, the A8L is a car everyone loves and passengers will remember the ride weeks later.

I don't think I would do the complimentary BMW Maintenance. Maybe for all other parts, but thay can have thier oil changes. Most car companies will change your oil every 5,000 miles. 5,000 mile stretchs are tough on the motor. One time the mechanic forgot to put oil in my car becuse they were in too much of a hurry and multi-tasking several cars at onece. When I change my own oil, I'm very focused and take my time and do it right.

My wife had a new Toyota Corolla years ago when I met her, and when the dealership changed the oil on her new car, they didn't put the drain-plug in.
But it was easy to follow the trail of oil from the dealership to where she worked.
We traded the new Corolla straight across on a 4-year older Passat that went faster, hauled more, and used less gas doing it (plus was 10x as safe as that Japanese tin-can).

I have had troublesome Ford Front-drive cars, but where Ford really shines on dependability is on their Rear-Wheel drive Platforms. Probably why Ford build the most durable trucks.

I drove a Ford Aerostar for 10 years and 250,000 trouble-free miles. I even towed my 21Ft boat with it. The 3.0L V6 was a great motor and this vehicle was rear-wheel drive. I was even able to fit a giant boiler in the back and saved a ton of money on shipping costs. The vehicle was even better than a pickup. I see Ford even started putting the 3.0L engine in the Jaguars becuse it was a good motor.

Sales on the vehicle eventully went down-hill because soccer-moms did not know how to drive a rear wheel drive mini-van in the snow. I cliched this issue as I had 2 Snow tires on extra factory rims that I could slap on and only required a few minutes of time in the fall.

It still ran great the day I traded it in.
