New Acura gets Top Safety pick

The new 2009 Acura RL sedan has won the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award in the Institute’s latest round of testing.

To qualify, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of ‘good’ in the institute’s front, side, and rear tests and be fitted with electronic stability control. The new RL improved significantly compared to the previous model, with the side impact test result going from acceptable to good and the rear test result improving from poor to good.

i actually think the new grill doesnt look THAT bad. but obviously not a great design. maybe i will get use to it as i see it more.

Impressive! I would like to see the tests to double there impact speeds for real world crashes! Who crashes at 40mph? And if you did how in the world could you get hurt? And side impact at 31mph? It should be more like 50mph and rear ends should be 60mph instead of the 20mph. How did Volvo do compared to this Acura? Anyone know?

Funny how the engineers put so much more effort on the safety aspect...now it's time to do the same effort if not "that much more" on the exterior design of their vehicles...don't get me wrong they look somewhat respectably nice, just in this day and age and knowing the position Acura is in, especially up against other Luxury rivals, they have no more room to waste anymore time on exterior styling epecially their flagship model...which I am not all to happy about.

Still not much of a flagship vehicle. My favorite is still the TL by far. The NSX hopefully will be the in-house trendsetter for them so it can inspire future models (ie. a true flagship luxury sedan). Something worthy of taking on the LS or Infiniti's Q if they decide to come out with it.

IMO, this new design will take some time getting use to it. It might look whacky now, but when you see them all day on our streets you might actually fall in love wit it. Plus, it's a Top Safety pick, which might attract some buyers. Maybe.
