Airbags like most systems are a 3rd party supplied part. BMW just got a bad run from the supplier, thats all.

BMW's are well made and well engineered and there is not a question about their quality.

They just have no style and are designed to appeal to the mind of amazinbimmer. Ugly & horrible, but good if you don't mind looking like a WWF fan.

I have two BMWs and used to have Audis, and not for a second would I ever expect them to be more reliable or fault-free than anything else, especially Lexus.

I'm just glad I don't have one of the recalled models. I had plenty of them with the Audis, but I still loved them.

What's the big deal? BMW has 1 recall and the Japanese fanatics go wild. I wonder what would happen if BMW would have the multitude of recalls the Japanese manufacturers got us used to.

I have nothing against BMW, they are just cars like ever other brand out there. I have always thought it kind of ridiculous that there motto is "Ultimate Driving Machine", as in my opinion it does not warrant that. I have test driven all of their models and had 2 company BMW's and never felt anything special about them. Luckily, my company has decided to drop them as a fleet provider and now we can choose.

Let me tell you one thing I do know for sure: BMW is the "Ulitmate Driving Machine".

I have owned 4 different models of the BMW brand and their worldly counterparts could not even come close, especially Lexus, Acura and Infiniti..

The superiority is obviously still there. Why would you even think that BMW needs defending? Is just a recall.. you know like the tenths, hundreds of recalls Japanese cars have every year.

bottom line all vehicles are made with part that may or may not work properly. if you like a brand, like the brand and shut up. just because you like it doesn't mean that everyone else has to. this comment is for the brand loyal, you know who you are.

amazinBimmer is checking to see if this recall applies to his 1/18 scale model..... in due time instead of saying that recalls are low for bmw - he will say audi sucks and that fwd cars have more recalls then rwd cars..... The one BMW I owned never had any recalls that I was notified of. I give them credit for taking a PR hit and ACTUALLY recalling the cars.

Ok I have a question for those of you guys who actually read the article.

So, since I have a 2006 E90 330i, would I automatically receive a 10 year/unlimited mileage warranty regardless of whether or not my car had the malfunctioning airbag sensor (mine does not).

I would think this would be for all cars regardless if the vehicle is effected this time or not. The best bet is to ask the service rep next time you bring it in for your scheduled maintenance. Also - I am assuming you mean the warranty for the airbag and not the whole car.

I was gonna say here comes the bashers and the defenders, but it seems they've already started.

Granted the 3rd party supplier is responsible for the product being faulty. But BMW does have the blame to keep because they should be testing these units out regularly. Not to mention that 200k is a fairly large production run of parts for a 3rd party to have issue with. Something that probably could have been caught much earlier in the run.

Seems like BMW may want to update their quality control and testing a bit.

Not to take away from them being great cars, but things like this do put little dents in your prestige.

i work for bmw. if you do own one of these vehicle and your air bag light does come on while driving or remains on you should bring it in even before you receive a letter from BMW NA.

it was not the floor mats .. what are you talking about .. it had to do with the center console and the clips that hold it down. What would happen is the console becomes loose and begins to press against the rod of the accelerator pedal thus acclerating the car unexpectedly ...

All cars will have recalls. There is still human error in and computer function or design. As long as the manufacturers stand behind their product and protect the customers as best as possible, that is all that really matters. Alot was learned from the mistakes Ford made with Firestone tires and that whole disaster ...

What if that silly cup holder(cdrom tray) in the 3-series fails to hold and spills hot coffee on your passenger, who then screams and startles the driver who then yanks on the steering wheel 1/4 turn making the Bimmer careening into a road hazard pylon which then catapults into the air striking a windshield of a transit bus coming the other way and the driver does a panic stop resulting in the good people on the bus drinking coffee to spill the hot liquid all over each other causing 3 degree burns left right and center... shouldn't BMW also recall the faulty cut holders too?

I recall a Toyota V6 with "sludge" oil deposits that was being denied by Toyota. But once the Lexus owners with the same problem started screaming "lemon", a voluntary recall was given. Made local news in LA when reporter went to Toyota HQ in Torrance.

Definitely a smudge on the record of BMW...if it wasn't for all the great new product they've been bringing out lately I might care.

BMW cars are far superior to any Asian or American brand. The only competition they have might be Mercedes Benz or Audi and guess what they happen to be German, the ultimate perfectionist.
