Who Will Be The Biggest Loser In The Luxury Car Market For 2008?

Who Will Be The Biggest Loser In The Luxury Car Market For 2008?
Most manufactures have already chalked 2008 as the year they would rather forget than remember.  We all like to rally behind our favorite luxury Marque and marvel at the new offerings and  impressive sales gains they typically post year in and year out. However with five full months of dismal reporting remaining, and precious few new models on the horizon, we all now realize this is a tough year to post any gains at all.  The market place has forever changed I am afraid.

Over the years leasing has become ever increasingly popular in the luxury market.  With outstanding residuals and low interest rates, luxury Marques found it easy to appeal to the entry level of the market with excellent lease rates.  So well in fact, I penned an article last year showing it was actually cheaper to have a BMW 3 series over a Toyota Camry over a typical lease. Needless to say I wasn’t the only person to notice as luxury car sales continued to skyrocket.

However with rising fuel prices and a deteriorating credit market we have seen changes.  Most notably the stepping away from leasing by the American Big 3, and several manufacturers setting aside billions of dollars in funds to cover artificially high residuals. Leasing it turns out is a risky proposition to say the least. While it seems no one will be left unaffected to a degree on the current leasing debacle, the question remains just how many buyers were simply capitalizing on low payments for different motives. Whether customers were snapping up luxury cars that were previously unaffordable, or because they always were going to purchase one anyway remains to be seen.

In Texas we call some of these opportunists, “$30,000 millionaires”.  You know the type, that cute single secretary down the hall making about $32K while driving a $80k Escalade.  Typically one would associate a modicum of income in relation to ownership of such an expensive car.  In this case the formula simply doesn’t fit, the low lease rates had changed the landscape of ownership into a boon  of subsidized vehicle sales.  After all we all want to look and feel successful, it is a natural progression. So in essence have we created a class of wannabes with no real avenue in to the luxury market other than a subsidized lease?

Now with tighter credit and leasing dramatically curtailed will those Marques that benefited the most from this new class now falter even further?  A scary proposition to say the least.

It’s all up to demographics.  Does the current 60% leasing rate of new BMWs leave their customers vulnerable to the higher costs of financing, or will they simply pay cash?  Are the 43% of those leasing Lexus vehicles simply Toyota owners attempting one up their neighbors with no addition funds to support this perceived wealth?

Who will survive and who will falter the most when their customers simply have to go some place else to stay afloat? To be honest only time will tell, but we want to give you the opportunity to tell us who may end up on the bottom, when and if their customer base makes them the “Biggest Loser”.

Take your vote, and make it count, then tell us why you believe who will suffer worse.

Interesting article, well put. I have enjoyed and reaped the benefits of our low interest leases for many years, always amazed at how on this side of the Atlantic we could enjoy this while in Europe/UK they paid much higher interest rates and hardly had personal leasing.

In 1997 I leased a Mercedes C280 and then went through 3 Audi A6's each time getting a better and more expensive spec. for the same or little more than the previous one. The residuals in the US are far higher than in Europe, especially the UK.

The US has been living a lie for most of this decade, Greenspan created a fake economy based on low interest rates and the housing boom. Now we are paying the price and it looks like the Auto industry is going to have a very hard time too. We still have artificially low interest rates in a desperate attempt to shore things up. Let us just hope it does not get too much worse than this.

"Greenspan created a fake economy based on low interest rates and the housing boom"

You really cannot blame Greenspan for what is the central tendency of the thing of which he was in control. I have mentioned F.A. Hayek on here before, but I never mentioned the nature of the works that were primarily responsible for his Noble prize in 1974. In "Prices and Production" and "Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle", Hayek analyzes the effect of central bank manipulations of interest rates and how they, by their nature, distort the market and create bubbles, which must then bust. I must say that Hayek was really a genius in many ways, as his contributions were manifold, including his work on knowledge and so-called "spontaneous order", which is related in modern thought to emergent behaviors.

The funny thing about Alan Greenspan is that his views as a younger person are irreconcilable with much of what he stated as a younger individual. For goodness sakes he was a confidant of Ayn Rand and wrote for the Objectivist Newsletter. Among the things that he wrote there, one was an essay on how he viewed the only responsible monetary system is one based upon metals as opposed to fiat.

are you for real? massive demand for all commodities from china, india and other emerging markets is driving the price of oil. in case you didn't know, the chinese government massively subsidizes oil--which drives demand even higher.

furthermore, political instability in major oil producing countries makes the price of oil even more volatile.

"Toyota.... have deep enough pockets to partially back low rates if they want to."

I guess that's your backhanded way of finally admitting that you're been completely wrong and Lexus is running those low interest rates you love to rag on BMW about so much. EVERYONE is running them. It's funny, even in admitting you were wrong you're a douche.

"The irony is that the more units BMW moves, the more they actually hurt themselves. Is maintaining the #1 volume title that important?"

It seems pretty important to Lexus. They're running special finance rates as well as they try to keep BMW (and Mercedes) from overtaking them in the U.S. The only difference is it's not working for them, they're still losing market share.

By the way, this year BMW took about 20% of what would have been U.S. new cars and sold them globally to offset the lower U.S. profits. I bet Lexus would love to have been able to do that, huh? Too bad they can't, Lexus is nothing to the rest of the world. So instead Lexus is left just hemhorraging money here in the U.S., having to offer those low rates to keep up with BMW and Benz, but still falling behind, without any global sales to make up for it. It's a sad sad day for Lexus. But you go ahead and keep spouting your drivel if it makes you feel better. There's no need to pile on, you're having a rough enough year as it is.

actually Audi is the biggest winner in all of this. The slumping U.S. economy isn't hurting them because they don't sell huge numbers here anyway, and they're a sales giant globally.

If you took away U.S. sales for all three, Audi is not far behind BMW and Mercedes in sales. Because of that they're the luxury brand best equipped to weather the storm that currently is the U.S. economy.

Great. Get back to me when BMW's quarterly profits are down 99% like Toyota's were. Better yet, instead of profits just being DOWN 99%, get back to me when BMW has LOST hundreds of millions of dollars like Lexus did last quarter.

By the way, the M3 is not included in the financing. And get over it already, Lexus is doing the same thing. And they're running $499 and $449 leases on the RX330 and ES350 with nothing down. You think maybe they're inflating those lease residuals or offering low money factors maybe? Hmm? ENOUGH!

You're like a broken record. Don't bother responding to this, I'm tired of repeating myself. You literally say the same thing over and over, and when evidence piles up that you're full of $hit you either ignore it or just try spinning it some other way. You. Are. Wrong. I know. Everyone knows. Really I think even you know. Look at your boost counts -- you're negative in every single one, and every time you and I go back and forth you end up behind by least 10. What does that tell you?

Huu, I'm done with you. This whole site is done with you. Go suckle on the Lexus teat in private, I have no more interest in wasting my time or everyone elses on you.

And to you Huuey,

Have a nice day at the "Lexus Summer Sales Event" where you can get a Lexus for thousands and thousands off the sticker price because of bloated Lexus inventories and lack luster sales.

Poor Acura? Considering Acura has the one of the oldest and smallest lineups of the luxury brands mentioned, I would say Acura isn’t doing that bad. I mean, you can only have record sales for so long. The new TSX is doing well. I don't expect the new TL to do as well as it did in the past because the economy, but it will still sell well.

Sales as of July 2008

Lexus - 158,893
BMW - 155,427
MB - 140,012
Acura 90,742
Infiniti - 71,118
Audi - 51,827

Exactly o6tldude. Acura products will still sell well. The domestic brands like Cadillac are hurting badly. Despite what the badge whores want people to believe,
Lexus still outsells them all in North America despite the economy.
