Peugeot could return to the US

Peugeot will focus on emerging markets and expanding its model range to cultivate its desired goal of selling more than two million vehicles worldwide per year by the end of the decade.

While a return to the U.S. market is also a possibility, the French carmaker will grow in emerging markets such as China, South America and Russia to help boost sales.

I'm going to date myself, Peugeot was one of the brands I was selling when they decided to pull out of the U.S.. I asked or Peugeot representative, "is it because of their unreliability?" He smiled and said "It's because Americans don't understand quality." I was taken aback by this statement "what do you mean American want reliable cars." His response was "reliability has nothing to do with quality". Then he told me of the profound ideological differences of countries and quality.

French - quality is design especially the avaunt-guarde.

Japanese -Precision and engineering

Germans - Engineering and development.

British - Luxury and craftsmanship.

Americans - Reliability and low maintenance.

Once I understood this my ideas of the automotive industry changed. The industry itself has evolved too, but taking a macro look at it these philosophies are still there.

I wish Peugeot luck and I hope they understand the U.S. market better this time.

That is a very interesting take on things. Having owned a Peugeot I know them to be a little unreliable but also to be very well designed with great interiors and ride quality for their price range. I would definitely buy one again. If you are just looking for reliability don't buy Euro cars.. any of them. If you want a refined stylish driving experience then you buy Euro. For the record I drive a Japanese car right now very reliable but not very refined.

The French automakers should seriously consider exporting their vans to the U.S as there is currently a decent market for fuel efficient vans.

I currently own a Peugeot 307 and the customer servvice is very much lacking (in South Africa). The A/C button stopped working and it took over 2 months to import the part from France because they don't stock spares! And there's no communication from them either, you hve to do all the phoning if you want to find out what's happening on your vehicle when it's in for repair/service.

Very interesting and stylish designs but I won't buy Peugeot again.
