Hyundai going back to its small, fuel-efficient and cheap cars ways

After giving us an upmarket luxury sedan, Hyundai is going to go back to what it does best - producing fuel-efficient, small and less expensive cars. The Korean automaker has six new or redesigned vehicles planned for the 2009 and 2011 model years.

Along with a 4-cylinder 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which will start in the low $20,000s, Hyundai will introduce the next-generation Elantra in early 2009.

“We’re looking at small, fuel-efficient cars,” John Krafcik, product development chief for Hyundai Motor America told reporters. “We will be blessed when the new CAFE standards come in.”

Yea, and no one else is even touching this approach huh? There are plenty of companies that are now moving into making smaller more fuel efficient cars.

It's smart on Hyundai's part. Just because they built the Genesis to prove that they are capable of making a well priced luxury car they still have to cater to their existing customer base. They can dip their hands in the luxury market one car at a time while focus mainly on their primary goal, econo-cars. Toyota first and foremost is an econo-brand but then Lexus came along as a Japanese-American brand for US/Canada and their doing great in North America. Hyundai needs to take a step back and think thoroughly what their going to do next. Props to Hyundai.
